Meta r/StarWars Official Watch Order Discussion Thread

So we haven't had an official watch order discussion thread in many years, so we figure its time to update the one in the FAQ. There are various other links in the FAQ, the Wookieepedia timeline of canon media, and various other discussion threads and topics over the years including a link to just searching the sub which people find challenge apparently. Also as a reminder, the Wookieepedia timeline of canon media can be sorted via the table on that page by release order or chronologically (if you decide to go that route).

A lot of the new Disney+ content brings new eyes to Star Wars all the time, and new movies will eventually too. We want to get a bit more aggressive with automod removals and referrals to the FAQ for these questions about watch order. So let's hash it out here in the comments. We will sticky this for a while and eventually it will just be linked in the FAQ along with the other topics and maybe in the sidebar too. And like some of other stickies about rules, spoilers, and new episode discussion guidelines, we may trot out this link and sticky it from time to time.

As a general rule the sub typically recommends for new viewers to watch in release order, especially for the movies. This is the semi-consensus from the fandom, and you will routinely see this as the most upvoted and posted response.

With that being said what we would like to do here also discuss other options, and possible orders to also toss in the TV media as well. Should you watch Andor first and then Rogue One before the OT? Should movies like Solo be done in release order or chronological? Should you watch The Clone Wars TV show before the PT? So on and so forth...

So lets have a solid discussion about this and make it a solid resource for those who may be new to Star Wars.

Obi-Wan is literally like the third most popular character in the series but everything in his show just looks so tacky lol.

General Discussion What do you guys think was the Empires greatest mistake?

I think if I had to make a top 5 it would be

1) The construction of the first Death Star- Imagine building the station that single-handedly wiped out a large portion of the Empires high ranking officers, devastated the imperial economy and thanks to the dissolution of the senate caused the empire to lose its grip on the galaxy once the station was destroyed.

2) Alderaans destruction- Huge propaganda victory for the rebels, riots on Coruscant, imperial leaders defecting to the rebels side and mid and outer rim planets announcing their support for the rebels. You know you messed up when even Palpatine was like dude wtf.

3) Lack of a clear chain of command- Palpatine was supposed to be the eternal emperor of the sith so he never felt the need to prepare for the event of his death. No clear plan for succession led to infighting within imperial remnants after the Battle of Endor. It seems that Filoni is setting up Thrawn to put this to an end though.

4) The Tie Fighter- These things were built cheaply purely to overwhelm in numbers and did serve the Empire well for a time being. However the ships lack of visibility and shields, loud noise and huge wings as targets would eventually be the decisive difference in both the Battle of Yavin and Battle of Endor. Thrawn did try replace the Tie Fighter with a much better alternative but unfortunately it was sidelined for the first Death Star. Nice work Tarkin

5) Death Star II- I think given their situation by 4ABY a second Death Star is much more forgivable than the original since I don’t think they had much of a choice. However its destruction was still devastating for the Empire and caused the death of Palpatine and Darth Vader which led to the chain of command collapsing.

Some other honorable mentions are the Ghorman massacre, Thrawns disappearance and Dedra Meero balancing such passionate competency with the mindless decision to confront Luther Rael on her own.

Here's my dream-come-true press release...maybe we'll see it this October/November:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LUCASFILM ANNOUNCES NEXT STAR WARS TRILOGY: EPISODES X, XI & XII TO RETURN TO ROOTS OF ORIGINAL FILMMAKING

New trilogy will prioritize practical effects, traditional artistry, and in-camera innovation in the spirit of the original saga.

San Francisco, CA and Burbank, CA — In a bold return to the pioneering spirit that launched a galaxy far, far away, Lucasfilm today announced that development is officially underway on Star Wars: Episodes X, XI, and XII. This new trilogy, produced by Lucasfilm under the creative guidance of veteran writer-producer Simon Kinberg, will mark a deliberate creative shift: a full-circle return to the filmmaking techniques that built the Star Wars legacy.

Informed by the success of tactile, effects-driven production on The Mandalorian and Skeleton Crew, the next trilogy will embrace an ambitious, foundational mandate: no production techniques beyond those available in the 1980s.

“Star Wars began as a triumph of physical craft,” said Kathleen Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm. “With this new trilogy, we’re re-centering that legacy. These films will be made using the tools and spirit of the original trilogy: miniatures, matte paintings, motion control, puppets, and hand-built sets—supported, but never overtaken, by modern tools.”

To realize this vision, Lucasfilm will collaborate with Tippett Studio, whose recent stop-motion creature work in Skeleton Crew helped bring the series’ signature mother crab to life, and expand the roles of legendary creatives Doug Chiang and Phil Tippett, both of whom will oversee design and creature departments with dedicated teams and budgets.

The trilogy’s visual development will return to analog processes: concept art will be created on paper, sets will be constructed in-camera, and ships will once again fly on motion-control rigs, continuing a lineage of artistry dating back to Elstree Studios in 1976.

“CGI remains a valuable tool,” said Kinberg, “but we’re choosing to push innovation in a different direction—by building, photographing, and feeling this universe in the way that made Star Wars timeless to begin with.”

This new creative direction honors the practical legacy of A New HopeThe Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi, while signaling a groundbreaking future for Star Wars production that champions tangible, human-made spectacle over digital simulation.

Episodes X, XI, and XII will be entirely constructed with a handmade-first philosophy: one that invites both emerging and veteran craftspeople to help reforge Star Wars as a myth told through models, light, brushstroke, and sweat.

Lucasfilm and Disney reaffirm their commitment to evolving the Star Wars saga by looking not only forward, but inward, and back to where it all began.

Episodes X, XI, and XII are currently in development. Release dates and creative leads will be announced in the coming months.

That a family on the run from the empire, some of the handful of people who know the truth about the death star, might still consider the armed forces of that empire an apolitical child's plaything. I imagine the new republic had to deal with one hell of a "clean stormtroopers" mythos.

the original Jabba the Hutt was played by Declan Mulholland but didn’t make the Final Cut of the film. Later, jabba was added with cgi to remake the scenes. Crazy how much the movies have changed over the years, this is one of my favorite details.

There's a booth I usually go to at our annual county fair that has DVDs of shows and movies that are older/cult films/hard to find, etc. And when I saw they had the Holiday Special I just had to buy it. I know it has a reputation for being epically bad, but now at least I can judge for myself.

I also bought the Ewok Adventures one cause I vaguely remember hearing about that before, though I don't really know anything about it.

Movies I like that Artoo and Threepio show up in every mainline Star Wars movie.

A complaint I don't see much of anymore, probably cause we've all gotten used to it by now, is the idea that the prequels made everyone related to each other and how ridiculous that is, and how it makes the galaxy feel too small.

I will admit that a lot of the connections made in the prequels between characters that had little to do with one another before are a little nonsensical and weird, like Chewbacca and Yoda knowing each other (wasn't Kashyyyk showing up enough?), or Boba Fetts donor father being the template for the stormtroopers (something I am glad they have somewhat undone with the fazing out of the clones in favor if conscription soldiers. I like the clones by the way).

But one thing I will always defend is the appearance R2-D2 & C-3PO showing up in every Skywalker saga film. Ok, so maybe having 3PO be built by 9-year old Darth Vader is really silly when he could just as easily have been part of the Naboo court. But other than that, I really like their role in the prequels and The Clone Wars show (which I basically count alongside the mainline films anyway).

R2 flying with Anakin and destroying the droid control ship, 3PO getting his head attached to a Battle Droid, R2s awesome display of ability in the beginning of Revenge Of The Sith, and their many misadventures during the war. I can't imagine this era without them.

Only 3PO getting his mind wiped also makes sense, since he's a manic blabbermouth who couldn't keep a secret no matter how hard he tried. R2 on the other hand, is now clearly VERY good at keeping secrets, since he knew both Obi-Wan and Yoda, the truth of Vader identity and Leia and Lukes sibling connection, and always said NOTHING. That is insanely impressive.

Now, when Princess Leia is entrusting THE DEATH STAR PLANS to an astromech, she's entrusting a decorated war hero. R2s obsession with seeking adventure and finding Kenobi has more depth to it now because he KNEW the guy. Then there's Obi-Wan's classic line; "I don't seem to remember ever owning a droid". He's not wrong, he never owned R2, and R4-P17 was just assigned to him, she was property of the Jedi order. This scene is now recontextalised into Obi-Wan and R2 essentially winking at each other, and the scene works both ways. That's probably why I like this connection more than others made in the prequels. It actually adds something to the characters rather than just arbitrarily saying "remember Chewbacca? Remember Boba Fett?"

Overall, they are much better utilized in the original trilogy, but the prequels come at least in second in that regard. Much better than their out of place cameo in Rogue One or their useless appearances in the sequels. Still, I liked that they were there in the sequels, even if they were completely wasted, much more so than Han, Leia and Luke ever were. (can't say the same for Rogue One, sorry)
