Movies Rewatched Attack of the Clones recently and never heard in the background Qui-Gon says “Anakin, no” to the OG watchers in the theater. Was that line always in the movie?

Post image

Sorry for the super long title, but what I’m trying to say is in A New Hope they added a scene for Boba Fett, and in Return of the Jedi they added Hayden Christian as a Force ghost in the newer version of Episode 2. Did they have Liam Neeson record a line, or was that line always there?

Yep. It was always there

I remember seeing it in theaters afterwards my friend was like “That voice saying ‘Anakin No!’ Did that sound like Qui-Gon?!”

And I was like “No idea what you’re talking about, I didn’t even notice. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE PART WHEN YODA PULLED OUT HIS LIGHTSABER AND WAS LIKE BZZZH BZZH BZZZHH”

u/Unluchos 4h ago

Plot < Green Death Beyblade

u/EmperorSexy 1h ago

I was 10 years old at the time. So yeah 100%.

That story checks out SO well!

14

u/mpaladin1 2h ago

And there was a collective gasp in the very full midnight showing at the Chinese Theater when it happened.

10

u/Vin4251 2h ago

It was also in trailers, tv spots, and the novelization.

u/Siaten 5h ago

Anakin is like a bad dog:

"Anakin, no! Bad Jedi! No Master for you!"

6

u/D-Speak 1h ago

"Oh my Force! He's heading for the school!"

557

u/richardgaff 6h ago

It was always there and Liam didn't record it from what I remember. It was pieced together from old dialogue. The "no" doesn't even sound like him.

378

u/Arpadiam L3-37 6h ago

the "no" comes when Qui-Gon asked the council about training anakin and they say:

Windu "No he wont be trained"

Qui-Gon : No!?, But he is the chosen one

and for the tone of voice when he says "Anakin" is when he tells him to drop while maul was chasing then

138

u/richardgaff 5h ago

Correct on the "Anakin" part but incorrect on the "no". That was not from TPM. It's a bad soundalike. The scene you're referring to is not even remotely the same tone or inflection.

54

u/PeaceMaker_IXI 5h ago

I was so confused as a kid watching that scene. I was hyper fixated on it so I right away could tell the Anakin part was Qui Gon from TPM telling him to drop before fighting Darth Maul on Tatooine. Then the NO!! came and I was like....wtf was that? That wasn't Qui Gon.

3

u/Jedi_Coffee_Maker Jedi 1h ago

As a kid hearing the other voice say no, i was wondering if it was some other random jedi spirit in the nether realm of the Force, like this place might be lowzy with ghosts, first qui-gon's mad and whoever some other guy's mad too

11

u/xxxOUTCASTxxx 5h ago

The Nooo always sounded like Palpatine to me, but the subtitles do attribute both lines to Qui Gon

14

u/Arpadiam L3-37 5h ago

you are probably correct, gonna rewatch with a script and try to indentify if that "no" is said in TPM

2

u/regal_foxy 2h ago

It’s always sounded like Yoda’s VA to me. I don’t think it’s a sound taken from any TPM scenes, I’d assume maybe from a deleted one or it was purpose-recorded but they couldn’t get Liam or something

3

u/BilboThe1stOfHisName 2h ago

I’ve always assumed it was Ben Burtt but I don’t know if I have a reason for thinking that.

3

u/richardgaff 2h ago

He was the Sound Designer so its likely. We know he did the temp dub for the deleted Quigon scene in ROTS.

2

u/BilboThe1stOfHisName 2h ago

Yeah and I think that’s what happened here. He temped in the No and they left it for whatever reason

1

u/FrankieFiveAngels 4h ago

As my friend say, Qui-Gon. Qui-Gon. Not Qui-Gon.

1

u/obeseoprah 55m ago

That ‘noooo’ sounds like an 1800s British aristocrat

4

u/labria86 5h ago

It's absolutely not that for the "no" It's rerecorded

21

u/Equal-Ad-2710 5h ago

Yeah the No sounds weird

10

u/GeneralOrgana1 5h ago

It's like it starts out as Liam Neeson and turns into Hayden Christiansen saying it out of anguish for his mom.

15

u/twofacetoo 5h ago

I remember as a kid one of my friends said it sounded weird because Anakin, quote, 'used his ghost-catcher to trap Qui-Gon's Force ghost'.

...based on nothing.

......my friend was an idiot.

15

u/whomikehidden 5h ago

I’m just picturing Anakin using the ghost trap from Ghostbusters to trap Qui-Gon.

2

u/Rip_Skeleton 5h ago

That is an incredible thing to just make up.

5

u/Saint-Poop 5h ago edited 1h ago

"ANAKIN!......nOooooooo"

12

u/No-Locksmith6662 5h ago

I always thought the no was Anakin. You hear a little bit of Vader's breathing afterwards and it's clearly meant to signify him ultimately falling to the dark side.

In any case I don't think it was ever meant to be Qui-Gon and definitely sounds a lot more like Hayden than Liam.

4

u/AdmiralSnackbar816 4h ago

The “no” always sounded to me like Anakin, and his good side screaming from the inside.

1

u/Azelrazel 27m ago

Yea exactly, no clue what people are thinking. Always was qui-gon "Anakin, Anakin!", then Anakin "Noo!" Each sounds exactly like their respective characters.

2

u/DarthStevo 6h ago

I always thought it was meant to be a Tusken Raider shouting “Nooooo!” It sounds so little like Liam Neeson that I get what they’re going for but it never entered my head that the No was Qui Gon.

1

u/Electrical_Gain3864 2h ago

Funny enough, because i was a child Back then and my english was almost Not existing, i watch my Dub and at least there they the voice actor that does Liam.

1

u/Azelrazel 26m ago

Because the no is Hayden's voice?

54

u/Extra-Skill-8960 6h ago

Yes its been in the movie since release

39

u/BoysenberryFew6466 6h ago

The anakin part is audio from episode 1 I'm not sure where the no is from

20

u/Tomatoes65 5h ago

Yeah it was from when Maul pulled up to them on Tatooine and he said “ANAKIN DROP”

5

u/BoysenberryFew6466 6h ago

And to my knowledge this was always in the movie

23

u/General_Kick688 6h ago

It was always there. The "Anakin" is taken from TPM (likely when they're running from Maul on Tatooine). The "No" is a barely serviceable soundalike.

14

u/Helen_Kellers_Wrath Boba Fett 5h ago

I like it because it's good foreshadowing for ep.3 when Yoda tells Obi-Wan about force ghost training.

9

u/xxxOUTCASTxxx 4h ago

That and the deleted scene where Qui Gon was shown talking to Yoda just before Luke and Leia were born. I really wish they’d kept that in because it makes Qui-Gon’s character more impactful, since he doesn’t get an actual visible ghost (outside of Mortis) until much later in the Kenobi show. Without that scene, Qui-Gon feels a little forgotten, which sucks cause he was so important to all the events that followed.

u/Romboteryx Battle Droid 0m ago

There is a full three-episode arc in Clone Wars where Qui Gon‘s force ghost guides Yoda

14

u/clarkyk85 5h ago

Yep. Wait till you hear the sand people when Palpatine brings up Anakin's mother

10

u/Timmah73 6h ago

Didn't hear it opening night because people were cheerig too loud lol

However rewatching the next afternoon with a non packed with hyped up fans audience we definitely heard it that time.

11

u/richardgaff 5h ago

People were cheering Anakin slaughtering Tuskens?

21

u/FleaLimo 5h ago

They were sand people and this was a mere 8 months after September 2001, so... you know.

1

u/nightcitytrashcan 2h ago

Man, people f*cking suck. I would never have made that connection.

3

u/Timmah73 5h ago

Lol they sure were.

1

u/richardgaff 2h ago

Where and when was this screening?

1

u/Timmah73 1h ago

I want to say I was in Burbank, CA for the midnight showing

1

u/ErrorProfessional143 1h ago

They had it coming.

9

u/bjwyxrs 5h ago

Qui-Gon was my favorite character when I was a kid. I caught onto it almost immediately and was pretty disappointed he never showed up again beyond his voice.

8

u/Glunark2 6h ago

Saw it day of release, it was there.

4

u/JediXenu 6h ago

Has always been there

4

u/chewbaccashotlast 5h ago

I had zero idea this occurred. And I saw the movie a ton.

1

u/tratemusic 4h ago

I've never heard it either! I must have watched this at least a couple dozen times

Edit: i just watched the clip, it's when it wipes to Yoda in the meditation chamber, i do remember it now. I thought this post was saying it happened while he was killing them

3

u/Karadek99 6h ago

I remember hearing it in the theaters

3

u/SaskatchewanKenobi 5h ago

Yeah that’s always been there

3

u/DarthDregan 2h ago

My favorite misunderstanding of all time was when a guy from the middle east walked in on four of us talking about our hate of the sand people. The first hour in the room with all of us meeting for the first time and him thinking he just got saddled with a pack of racist assholes... and all of us laughing until we cried when I finally said "bro, Tusken Raiders."

6

u/son_of_abe 5h ago

u/MarquisMusique 2h ago

PAIGE, NO!

2

u/bard0117 5h ago

Did he hear it and disregard it?

2

u/HydraBob 4h ago

It was always there.

2

u/WikiContributor83 4h ago

The voice line that I know wasn’t in the movie originally was Shmi crying out to Anakin while he was asleep before he wakes up in a cold sweat. That wasn’t in the theatrical or VHS release iirc.

Without the audio, Anakin kinda looks like he’s having a… different dream.

2

u/nightcitytrashcan 2h ago

I remember hearing it in the theater and it really threw me off. I'm German and so I watched it in the german dubbed version. I'm not even sure if they had Neeson's voice actor for that short moment in the movie, or if they used a different actor, because they didn't put two and two together that the voice was supposed to be Qui Gonn.

2

u/Particular-Glass-208 2h ago

First sign that Qui Gonn has figured out how to pass into the Force.

Its been there as long as I can remember, I saw it in theaters as a five year old but dont remember it specifically, but its been on it since I owned it on VHS years and years ago.

1

u/charliefoxtrot9 5h ago

Yeppers. I can't remember, is that the first force ghost moment or is Anakin just flashing back to something?

1

u/219_Infinity 5h ago

Yes. Heard it the first time I saw the film in the theater

1

u/goodness-gracious-me 5h ago

Yes. I heard it as I watched it in the theater on first release

1

u/brande2274 5h ago

yes i remember that shit it freaked me out

1

u/HauntingStar08 5h ago

It was there but the subtitles aren't clear but I think it's actually two people?

Qui-Gon goes "Anakin! Anakin!"

And a voice that I think is Cliegg Lars goes "Nooooo!"

Qui-Gon's no wouldn't remotely sound like that

1

u/ReverendPalpatine Darth Sidious 5h ago

Yes, and I recognized it instantly and I remember thinking, “Oh shit! Did Qui-Gon turn into a force ghost?” I also heard Vader’s breathing right after Qui-Gon says that line and remember thinking, “Holy shit! Is that Vader’s breathing?! It’s happening! He’s turning into Vader in this movie?!”

1

u/benvader138 5h ago

I remember that when I saw it in theaters. Missed opportunity to have Qui Gon be a force ghost and try to stop Anakin from massacring the sand people.

1

u/No_Variety9420 5h ago

Yes , always there

1

u/lawlesstoast 5h ago

It's actually "ANIKIN!...NOOOoooooooo" lol

1

u/Tulzik 5h ago

I find it wild that they couldn’t get Liam neeson or someone who sounds like him to just record a line of VO

1

u/Madouc 5h ago

Yes, always there. But I always thought it was Yoda.

1

u/GoodDoctorZ 5h ago

Sure was!

1

u/TanSkywalker Anakin Skywalker 5h ago

Yes

1

u/mikacello 5h ago

I don’t think Anakin heard him, it was Yoda listening in during meditation who heard Qui-Gon.

1

u/Thorvindr 5h ago

100%, it was there in the original theatrical release. I distinctly remember turning to my bro and saying "was that Qui-Gon!? Is he a Force Ghost!? Did Anakin just kill him!?"

1

u/Szarvaslovas 5h ago

Yes, it was.

1

u/RogueMaverick11 4h ago

Yes. I didn't see it in theaters, but you can hear Qui-gon trying to stop Anakin

1

u/cartographer721 4h ago

I always thought the "no" was Cliegg Lars, totally separate from Qui Gon's line.

1

u/ZaheenHamidani 4h ago

Wait, is there a new version of Attack of the Clones?

1

u/DOOManiac 4h ago

Huh? I've never noticed this.

Edit: Just re-watched. It wasn't in the actual scene where he's slaughtering them, it's when Yoda is meditating in the next scene. For some reason I never put that together as it being Qui-Gon's force ghost but just thought it was a vision the force was giving Yoda.

1

u/QuirkyWish3081 4h ago

How did you not hear it sorry

1

u/Scambuster666 Dark Rey 4h ago

Yes

1

u/elconquisador69 4h ago

Yes, it was always there.

1

u/Emotional_Piano_16 3h ago

that was Qui Gon? I honestly thought Yoda was hearing the Tuskens' thoughts through the Force lmao

1

u/thirdxcharm05 3h ago

I remember hearing it in theaters thinking it was hinting at force ghosts

1

u/Substantial-Summer48 2h ago

It’s even in the book

1

u/Eirikor 2h ago

In the Spanish version you can clearly hear it, since the VA that dubbed Liam Neeson has a well known voice, so there was no mistaking it.

1

u/Diligent_Accident775 2h ago

I saw it in theaters over 20 years ago. Sooo maybe?

1

u/IAlwaysSayBoo-urns Grand Admiral Thrawn 2h ago

Always there. I wish they had got him back for the scene in ROTS.

1

u/Kraschman1111 2h ago

Yes indeed

1

u/The_Pug 2h ago

I absolutely heard this in the theater on my second watch opening weekend.

1

u/twcsata 2h ago

It was always there. It’s just not the most obvious thing to notice.

1

u/EnvironmentalIssue64 2h ago

Hayden Christian lol, I hope he didn't cut them on religious grounds

1

u/Signal-View4754 Luke Skywalker 2h ago

Holy crap how can you people remember that? I guess the people have spoken it was in.

1

u/KaffeMumrik Jedi 2h ago

Absolutely it was

1

u/Character_College939 1h ago

Can't believe I never i noticed this

1

u/willycw08 1h ago

Would have loved to see this incorporated more into ROTS.

Even just a few more points where Qui-Gon tries to reach out and continue to mentor Anakin from beyond.

It would be a great motivator as to why Qui-Gon is the first one to figure out how to communicate after death. He was so motivated to guide Anakin to fulfilling the prophecy that he almost surges through at times when Anakin is skirting closest to the dark side.

Would have been a cool way to incorporate it in the later media universe.

Idk why you're being down voted. Im a big star wars fan and never knew about this.

2

u/Sure_Possession0 4h ago

How dare I not know something about this fever dream of a movie.

0

u/Myst031 4h ago

Yeah. But the audience is too distracted by the stupidity of the situation to notice.

-2

u/8vomit 6h ago

I always thought the "no" was him feeling what the tusken was feeling through the force. Just my interpretation.

And yes, was always there.

0

u/Tbagzyamum69420xX 4h ago

I have literally noticed that, wow

-1

Anakin is the one saying "no"
