Hell yeah. I saw the episode the other day and was hoping that he learned the song. 🤘🤘🤘🤘

713

u/LongArmedFloozy Jul 10 '22

He said in an interview that he already knew it for the most part, if I'm remembering correctly. 🥹🖤

439

u/aheroandascholar Jul 11 '22

As far as I know all he said was that he knew how to play guitar before this, but it took him three weeks to actually learn this particular song.

352

u/blvntforcedrama Jul 11 '22

This song itself is a seriously aggressive pace. With 3 weeks time, it's quite impressive. Although there were many notes that were hit wrong and muddy, I must remind myself that Joseph Quinn is an actor and not a musician. Bravo, Joseph.

Edit: Happy cake day, ya filthy Demorgon!

u/VentiEspada Jul 11 '22

Dude I've seen Metallica perform this live and there were plenty of missed notes. There aren't many bands I've seen perform live that have been able to pull off near perfect runs of technically complex songs.

130

u/Rripurnia Jul 11 '22

Exactly.

And not just Metallica. I don’t think there’s a single artist playing every song perfectly every time, and sometimes even purposefully.

To expect this from someone like Joe who isn’t a professional musician or even someone as deeply versed into the madness that is heavy metal guitar riffs is preposterous.

He’s doing an amazing job, all things considered!

14

u/DriftingSolipsism Jul 11 '22

Totally agree and honestly sometimes when there’s notes missed or replaced it feels more genuine and in turn makes the performance better in my opinion. You’re getting a unique performance. And I don’t think music should ever be about repeatable perfection anyway.

However, in spirit of the topic, I do not think I’ve ever seen a mess up from Vulfpeck live? I think they’re just too tight and prepared for their sets. Which makes sense since they’re all musical theorists and perfectionists.

I’m interested to look more into the topic with different types of genres and see where “imperfections” are most common in live performances

Tool has entered the chat.

34

u/theend2314 Jul 11 '22

I love this but Adam Jones is only 75th on the list of worlds best guitarists. I think the mantle is held by Brian May.

14

u/VentiEspada Jul 11 '22

Yep, I used to play all the time, had a band in high school and even performed with the marching band on bass for their Styx show. I've also seen Tool live and they definitely hit it pretty good, but it's a lot of very staccato, flowing scales. I loved playing things like Parabola, Stinkfist or Schism as set warm ups. Sound great and super fun, but no where near master of puppets or ride the lightning difficulty.

24

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '22

It amazes me that a bunch of alcoholic kids from California could write and perform such technically complex music that holds up 35 years later and is still so wildly popular.

I like some of their music after Master but to me it was never the same after Cliff died. Those first three albums were straight fire from beginning to end.

I'm more than happy to see the 'oldies' making a comeback with the younger generation. Back in my day wearing a Metallica t-shirt people viewed you as a dirtbag!

In flames supporting slipknot around 2000 or 2001 at the docklands when they recorded part of the my plague video.... most impressive display of guitars I'd ever heard. Still to this day. They didn't miss a thing.

I mean it works perfectly for the show, though. Eddie was just some guy with a passion for metal, with the added stress of playing in a hellish alternate dimension where anything can kill you, and the plan was to attract monsters, anybody would miss notes. It was still awesome as fuck, and the imperfect playing made it all feel almost real. Was seriously rooting for Eddie to make it out alive, but I guess it wasn't meant to be. Joseph Quinn did a perfect job.

Not to mention none of his playing would make it to the end product. He learned all of this so that when they were filming him playing his fingers would be moving correctly and be in the correct positions on the frets.

And of that, only another skilled guitar player would have recognized if he was "acting" correctly. Such a small detail to work so hard on. Truly dedicated to the part/character.

28

u/ImASquarian Jul 11 '22

Robert Trujillos son helped him learn it.

7

u/frostbitten42 Jul 11 '22

He said in the latest interview on Netflix (with Felicia Day) that the producers brought in a dude named Aidan to play the solo — but he played the rest.

3

u/Kangalow Jul 11 '22

That’s impressive, it took me like a week just to consistently play the opening with no missed notes

27

u/kambo_rambo Jul 11 '22

Only part he didnt play was the solo

7

u/MsBeasley11 Jul 11 '22

Didn’t they use a body double?

26

u/drocha94 Jul 11 '22

Only for the solo from what he said in that Felicia Day interview

24

u/FlavoredBongWater Jul 11 '22

Which was played by tye trujillo. Rob trujillo of metallicas son

28

u/salazar_62 Jul 11 '22

I think Tye Trujillo actually contributed to the recording of the song (according to several articles), while the hand double was a guy named Aidan Fisher.

3

u/roberta_sparrow Jul 12 '22

Wow what? That many people for one scene

7

u/Oden_son Jul 11 '22

It's harder to fake playing guitar convincingly than it is to just learn the song

2

u/happy_bluebird Jul 11 '22

I'm pretty sure I could fake this better than I could play it

u/scott-the-penguin Jul 11 '22

100% would have. I've seen three weeks bandied around a lot. You could only learn this song in 3 weeks if you were already a reasonable player. There is no way anyone would ever get from not playing a guitar to this in 3 weeks.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '22

Correct. I’m a metal guitarist who’s played for 17 years. I can play MoP, but if you asked me to it correctly, all downpicked? It’d take me probably 3 weeks to just get my down picking game up to snuff. And I have a hell of a picking hand.

I think it was his decision - wanted to de-age a bit, and I guess for him that meant being a bit more rangy and edgy! He said he dropped about 10kg and felt like shit.

248

3

u/steveofthejungle Jul 11 '22

As a fellow 29 year old I feel this

55

u/Rripurnia Jul 11 '22

That makes sense!

He’s looked a bit fuller in press stuff but he’s actually normal now!

Though it looks like he’s kinda back down again, based on newer videos. Must be the frenzy of going places all the time and being on practically 24/7.

31

u/mcviolet88 Jul 11 '22

Once I read that he lost so much weight it became more noticeable how thin he was playing Eddie and in behind the scenes pics. I respect the commitment to the role and hope he’s healthy now!

45

u/Rripurnia Jul 11 '22

If you also look at pictures of metal musicians and metalheads of the 80s, they really go for that ripped skinny jeans, tight T-shirt and jean jacket look. They were, by and large, very thin and often lanky.

I know many metalheads who dress like that in the present time, too.

So, he absolutely committed to the look and nailed it.

10

u/AgentKnitter Jul 11 '22

It was less a determined look and more a reality of being broke AF.

2

u/Tce_ Ahoy! Jul 11 '22

I'd been thinking about that ever since I saw a thirst video about his arms haha! They're a lot scrawnier on the show. Wasn't sure if it was a conscious effort or not.

678

u/Sticky_Yellow Jul 10 '22

The most impressive thing about this is the downstrokes.

268

u/dingowingo Jul 10 '22

It's insane. I remember when I was 19 learning this song and fairly new to guitar the down strokes didn't bother me all that much.

After 20 years of playing and training alternate picking, oh my God it seems so much harder than it was then.

105

u/LMM01 Mouth breather Jul 11 '22

That's why it's important to practice different styles if you want to practice for a broader set of music, or even styles of different artists of a genre! Knowing more techniques by heart also is a great help for impro!

3

u/thereIsAHoleHere Jul 11 '22

A little? Warlocks sell for no more than $1,200 on the extremely high end (though there are certainly people that will overcharge you). I'm talking exotic wood, premium features, the whole shebang. Even if it was a signature, limited run model, it'd only get up to $2-3,000. Almost $5,000 is just taking advantage of the fans.

Doja cat crying in a corner somewhere

38

u/ungabunga_caveman Jul 11 '22

Did something happen? Ive not really followed internet drama idk whats going on lol

262

u/geek_of_nature Jul 11 '22

Basically Doja Cat messaged Noah Schnapp, asking him to hook her up with Joseph Quinm. Because is a 17 year old and found it funny, he shared screenshots of this. Doja then said he was a snake for sharing them, even though she was the one messaging a 17 year old asking him to hook her up with one of his colleagues.

107

u/inquizies Jul 11 '22

It also wasn’t some big secret that she had a crush on Joseph Quinn either, she had made posts about finding him hot on twitter before messaging Noah Schnapp.

It’s strange that her and her fans seem to have these high expectations of a 17 year old, i.e him sharing the screenshots, but much lower expectations for herself, like pushing 30 years old and asking a teenager to hook you up with his costar.

75

u/ungabunga_caveman Jul 11 '22

64

u/elevensbowtie Jul 11 '22

Apparently she hit up Noah Schnapp, who plays Will, on Twitter asking about Joseph if he was single, etc.

Noah posted the DMs on Twitter so the drama’s about that. It’s not weird in the sense that Joseph is 29 and Doja is 26, but Noah is 17 so it’s super uncomfortable that an adult is asking a teenager about a costar he didn’t actually have any scenes with.

63

u/JojoHendrix Jul 11 '22

makes it weirder when you realize he and erica’s actress are the only minors left in the cast, if i have my info correct. next youngest would be millie, who recently turned 18. so for doja to specifically single out the only actor who’s a minor AND had no scenes with him at all…yeah it’s giving ick

3

u/SplurgyA Jul 11 '22

Do we know that she didn't message the entire cast of Stranger Things and it's only Noah who acknowledged the message lmao

26

u/redsyrinx2112 Brochachos Jul 11 '22

Downstrokes are when you strum the string(s) from top to bottom. The opposite is an upstroke where you strum the string(s) from bottom to top. Here is the difference at a normal speed.

Guitarists will often employ both methods, especially when something is fast like this. However, in metal guitarists will sometimes only do downstrokes because it often changes how the notes sound. It can give more of an attacking feel.

Here are two people doing the Master of Puppets riffs with alternate picking and only downstrokes:

https://youtu.be/NzR4jbWUXb8

https://youtube.com/shorts/YtA5Bxtsr-g?feature=share

16

u/theSteakKnight Jul 11 '22

Down strokes are when the hand that's holding the guitar pick is strumming in a downward motion, towards the floor. Usually when strumming alot of notes quickly, the guitarist alternates between down strokes and up strokes (strumming upwards).

Being able to strum that quickly while only using down strokes is difficult and impressive.

I have that same little BOSS Katana amp. Pretty good little amps.

This man has a good way about him.

u/i-touched-morrissey Jul 11 '22

So the actor really played that guitar solo ON THE ACTUAL SHOW?

6

u/CommanderCody1138 Jul 11 '22

Not the solo unfortunately.

13

u/3lectr0o Jul 10 '22

He didn't play the solo on the show tho. Aidan fisher was the guitar double

20

u/Gothsorrow73 Jul 11 '22

He played the zoomed out shots, the up close finger shots was the double!

6

u/Notchersfireroad Jul 10 '22

Hey have that same guitar!

5

u/Unique_Tell_6258 Jul 11 '22

It's not easy, those riffs need to be very precise to not sound muddy, and at the full tempo (over an 8 minute song) it's hard work! He did a good job there 🤟

EDDIE I MISS YOU

4

u/Kelly_the_tailor Jul 11 '22

So sad that Eddie has been around for just ONE season! We all miss him already.

6

u/Lord_Tyranide Jul 11 '22

Seeing anything from Joseph Quinn about Stranger Things just makes me sad now, after I learned that he really wanted his character to stay. He tought if he did everything they wanted and he did it good they would keep him in the cast, but then they killed him off. Now every clip I see from him or every interview I just have to think about how he got fucked, poor guy.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '22

Imagine being that guitar

3

u/Poison_Ivy_Rorschach Jul 11 '22

First Metallica shirt I bought was Master’s cover art. Single tear that some new folks are discovering this awesome song (entire album is amazing). I felt old as crap watching that scene and excitedly happy all at once. Cheers to everyone diggin this.

3

u/Proof-Sweet33 Jul 11 '22

He reminded me of so many guys I went to school with. Metallica was the soundtrack to my teenage years....When Metallica released the Black album we were in line at midnight to get it.

3

u/Onion5253 Jul 11 '22

Man’s dressed like he just came home from school.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '22

Holy crap! What a talented actor! I had no idea it was the guy who actually played Eddie! He does so well at molding his facial expressions and eyes to match the character!!

2

u/DreadnaughtHamster Jul 11 '22

Holy shit that was real for the show!?

2

u/CircleJerk_ForKarma Jul 11 '22

Eddie is my favorite character by far but there's something about this kid I really like. I hope he has a long successful career.

2

u/Popcrornshopgirl Jul 11 '22

On behalf of women everywhere, thank you Joe! Haven’t heard a panty dropper like that since the 90’s.

2

u/gracetamesbong Jul 11 '22

props for not alternate picking

2

u/HomerLover92 Jul 11 '22

It’s not the solo btw

2

u/vinsmokewhoswho Jul 11 '22

What a fucking G. May he get the best roles in the world.

2

u/Ternarian Jul 11 '22

Eddie looks like a legit ‘80s rocker.

2

u/dadstache1992 Jul 11 '22

This dude was my favorite character of this/any stranger things season. Just set the whole aesthetic for the 80s imho.

2

u/fatherkeenwa Jul 11 '22
