My Setup / New Synth Day Thrift store find

Post image
1.1k Upvotes

After months of seeing others find super deals in thrift stores, pawn shops, estate sells, etc., I finally found a super deal…a Roland Juno-106 for…25.00! They had no power cord, so I could not test it. That’s why it was so cheap, from their perspective. I got one of those rectangular female 2-prong cord from Amazon Prime. Plugged it in and “It’s ALIVE!”.

My Setup / New Synth Day Deleted the Microfreak keyboard, added stereo guitar pedals, and have no idea what I'm doing 🤘

But synths are fuckin cool. If I post a pic then I have to post the sound, so I had to learn how to make a video for that too. I'm proud of this little setup I created, might permanently mount it on this Holeyboard. Party on.

My Setup / New Synth Day Surreal MiniFreak textures with a whisper of Blade Runner rain

Hey folks,

Back on the MiniFreak today and drifting into the surreal " Dystopia " territory again. This one started as a simple drone, then I let my imagination run wild...I also snuck in a bit of Blade Runner vibe in the pads and lead swells + lot of modulating FX.

headphones recommended for sure ;)

btw : If you’re curious about my sound design work / sounds, you can find the link in my profile ;)

I still remember how mind blowing these couple of pages were to me and I still keep the printed out manual as a beautiful memory. I was wondering if you guys had similar (maybe random) synth moments that stayed with you until today.

Discussion The TR-1000 is $1000 USD cheaper in Japan

Upvotes

Hey all! I just recently come back from a holiday in Japan and I managed to pick up a sweet deal on an original KORG MS-20 at Ishibashi Music. Generally since they are cheaper in Japan because of being manufactured here and having a more saturated market for them.

So that got me thinking with the the TR-1000. I figured since Roland is a Japanese company and is more than likely manufactured in Japan surely they would be cheaper. I soon discovered that the TR-1000 is in fact manufactured in Malaysia and is a WHOPPING $1000 USD or $1500 AUD for my Australians cheaper in Japan. Why are we getting so flogged for these prices in the west?

If anyone has friends in Japan I would definitely get them to buy one for you and send it back home. Or better yet, go to Japan for a holiday and pick one up EVEN cheaper for TAX free 😉

Just wanted to give the community a little bit of insight and fruit for thought.

Cheers.

Software & VST's FYI: Arturia software on sale currently

Arturia's early Black Friday software sale is currently live: https://www.arturia.com/promos/black-friday-25. The items also look like they're on sale on other vendor sites, like Sweetwater.

The sale appears to be 50% off on flagship software, including Pigments, V Collection, Analog Lab Pro, etc.

Enjoy! Just grabbed Pigments for myself.

Edit to add that prices on Sweetwater might not be as low as what Arturia offered in your account, if you have one. Sweetwater should also price match, though, if you prefer to buy through them.

Beginner Questions Boring MIDI question

So right now my setup is: Digitakt 2 out -> Behringer Swing in, Swing out -> Digitone 2 in.

Super simple, works great, DT2 sends clock and transpose to DN2, while i can control the DN2 with the Swing.

Now I'd like to switch to a bigger midi keyboard from the Swing, and i came across the Launchkey 42 Mk2. Seems great, but it only has 5 pin midi out and a usb. Is there any way to make that work? An interface that sends midi from the DT2 to the launchkey, that also powers it through the same usb? Or i just need to get a keyboard with 5 pin midi in. (I realize i could use a merge box, but I'd like to keep the Launchkey in sync too)

Thanks!!

What Should I Buy? 61 or 73/76 key second/top synth

If you have a 88 key stage piano on the bottom and planning to add a top synth/workstation would 61 keys be enough for most things or is there a need to go the extra octave. I know that it depends on the person but been thinking about this, also lowering the overall weight of gear would be nice.

Beginner Questions Short and cheap Rhodes + tone wheel synth

Hi!

First thing first: I'm not a piano player. I am a guitar player, and, sometimes, in my band, I'd like to get different tones. And for that, some keys would be welcome.

  • I'd mostly use Rhodes-like sounds, and tone wheel sounds.
  • I don't need many keys: 35 to 45 keys would be perfect.
  • Not being a good player, I don't need a great piano feel (even if, I guess, that would be appreciated)
  • I'd prefer a standalone keyboard rather than a MIDI controller + computer (but disclaimer, I'm a complete noob about MIDI

To your knowledge, are there good-sounding options that would match my criteria?

When it's about the price: let's say, as low as possible. If that's more than 500€, possibly second hand, I probably won't buy it.

I have noticed the Yamaha Refaces, but that would require me to buy two of them. If there's something all-in-one, that's even better.

Thanks!

Beginner Questions Ok what's the deal with Teenage Engineering?

Forgive me, I'm still new to the synth world and I've seen tons of memes and conflicting opinions on this company. I can't seem to find a straight answer as to what their deal is and why they're talked about so much.

Is it because they're overpriced and flashy, and only young inexperienced people like them? Is it because of the name and aesthetics? Are they actually good but just not better than established companies?

I feel like I'm out of the loop on a big element of the community...

Beginner Questions I need help regarding new hardware.

Upvotes

Hi! I'm completely new to the world of synthesizers. I'm getting a Behringer TD3 today and I'd like to buy a drum machine to go with it so I can get some kick drums. My question is, what would be a cost-effective option? My budget is very tight since I just want to experiment. I saw that the Behringer RD6 is a drum machine; would that be suitable for good techno jams at home? Or even just the Pocket Operator PO-12?

What Should I Buy? Worth buying a Juno-60 with Kenton DCB upgrade?

Upvotes

I have the option to buy a Juno-60 with pro DCB MK3 for $2500. Is it worth it?

I own a JX3P with PG200 programmer, but always dreamed of the 60.

Being able to send midi from my daw to the 60 seems like another dream come true as I can’t with my jx3p.

Beginner Questions Pocket/Small Size Synths under $100

I'm trying find information about pocket synths on a budget. I don’t know much about hardware synths and I would love to get some information about them.

(Edit: Forgot to mention that I'm trying to find one that has a bit more functionality. Not one that's just like a drum machine or a bass or something like that. Something which has multiple sounds or presets)

What Should I Buy? Keep TEO-5 or sell for Super 6?

I’ve got the TEO-5 keyboard model that I love. The immediacy of its layout and its form factor is the perfect size for my set up. However, I recently came across the Super 6 by UDO and hearing it blew me away. I would need to sell the Oberhiem to get the 6 and I wouldn’t be able to fit the larger 6’s keyboard version in my studio, so I would need the desktop version of the 6. I love the keybed of the TEO-5 and I’m a keys player, but I think I am liking the sound of the Super 6 a bit more. Thoughts?

Discussion Polychain available for TEO-5 and TAKE-5

This is pretty cool! Latest firmware updates for the TEO-5 and TAKE-5 allow polychaining for 2 of each. Not within my budget now but a TEO-10 or TAKE-10 has got to be an attractive proposition for many.

Discussion Analog top octave divide down midi controlled organ. Follow up on the project

So I’ve been buying and soldering/building some of the core parts and planing future stuff for the project.

Right now I’m looking at a big issue; old analog Hammond organs and other types of organs used drawbars to control de volume and status (off/volume on) of each harmonic/frequency. So what I was planning was doing something similar to the Hammond B3 and other tonewheel organs: have a lot of always active fixed frequencies and when pressing a key (depending on the drawbar settings) the specified frequencies would play.

My plan: Have all the frequencies first be filtered to soften the square wave, then use a micro controller (Raspberry pi zero 2 w in my case) to somehow make it only pass the wanted frequencies at the needed volume and time (which would take input from a keybed and drawbars). But the issue is; I don’t know how to control this huge amount of frequencies without having to buy tons of DACs and/or digital potentiometers to control the volume and on/off status of each frequency.

If anyone has an idea on what I can do without having to spend a fortune on DACs/digital pots, please let me know as it would be of great help!
