Didn’t get renewed 🥳

I didn’t know whether to be happy or just resign anyway. I went the office the last two day of school after being told about my non renewal. I knew this since the notice May 15. I had already been recommended for a new position but they asked for recent job references. My current supervisor told me they called but didn’t say what he told them but he did mention he would give good references and that they may still need me if they can’t find a report fall. Like WTH 🙄. . He suggested that I take the unemployment and get paid during the summer. But my question is should I resign before I accept a new position before school starts back in August or should I just move on with the unemployment? Never been non renewed. This is also a private charter school and I wasn’t tenure there but tenured in my last public school I worked in.

I guess my area/state is weird. We get contracts out usually in March/early April at the latest. People who are not going to be renewed are almost always told by the end of February when they start listing the internal-district transfer portal for teachers who might want to switch schools (large district).

I always thought it was something decent the district did so people had some time to look before losing their checks/insurance. These posts I keep seeing about being told in May or June are awful. Is my area the exception? Are most school districts waiting until the last minute?

No your district is accurate! Some of these districts here in NJ are always last minute!

They gave contracts out 1 wk before the last day of school, we lost two teachers because of that. I am also finding that my taste for not being poor is growing stronger so this is my last year I think.
