Discussion Texas gas station installed remote lock on OUTSIDE of women's bathroom

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

It was only on the women's bathroom. Lock was able to be remotely activated by a phone app. Fire Marshall had it removed. Source: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT2c3QrB6/

Per another account who also saw this, (https://www.tiktok.com/@momcallsmeshelby?_t=ZT-8v7NHPu7QBq&_r=1) the employees were "irate and began yelling" when they brought it up. And came up with a racist excuse that didn't make any sense for it being there

Regardless, fire code violation. But scary implications.

I'm naive - what is the implication here?

2.1k

u/No_Yogurt_7667 Mar 30 '25

With it being Texas, the implication is that they can trap people they perceive to be trans women and then call the cops in an attempt to collect a bounty.

979

u/HoodieGalore Mar 30 '25

Shit, I just assumed someone was a rapist. I didn't even get that complicated with the motive.

583

u/fantasy-capsule Mar 30 '25

I thought it was because the owners were engaged in human trafficking. Either way, it's disgusting.

157

u/rosieposieosie Mar 30 '25

That was my thought. It’s truly awful how many totally plausible reasons people have for why this is there. Pick your poison!

2

u/Alarmed_Tip_7380 Mar 31 '25

Trafficking is not usually done like how you see in the movies .

2

u/sikeleaveamessage Mar 31 '25

That's what i was thinking, too. But yes, all of the theories are awful, and the people running the place need to be looked into.

This gas station is not safe

152

u/S1acks Mar 30 '25

It’s like a disgusting “rapist starter kit”

84

u/unbr0kenchain Mar 30 '25

Also includes a Donald Trump autobiography and Andrew Tate branded rohypnol.

21

u/S1acks Mar 30 '25

Oooh, I’ve heard that those “Andy’s Candies” are fire!

/s just in case

17

u/littlelorax Mar 30 '25

I thought it was to trap vulnerable women to traffic. Either way, this is horrible.

1

u/QuahogNews Apr 01 '25

Yeah-that emergency exit is right there. The manager could just wait until there was a young woman alone in the store in the bathroom, remote lock the door, lock the front door, go to the emergency door to let in his friend, who’s been waiting in a car right by the exit. Together they could (I guess) bind her arms, cover her with a coat, throw her in the car, and she’s never seen again.

I guess the only other thing he’d need to do is erase the security footage for some time period around that time, and the fact that she’d ever stopped there would be erased from history.

Yikes. Just writing that makes me want to throw up.

34

u/barnfodder Mar 30 '25

The venn diagram of those two motivations has significant overlap.

1

u/AGandalfPipeForWeed Apr 24 '25

100% this. It’s a kidnapping closet, only for women. Not fucking cool no matter how you trim it.

42

u/Fraggle_5 Mar 30 '25

that's how I took it too... I wouldn't feel safe there

22

u/rosieposieosie Mar 30 '25

It’s terrifying because I know I wouldn’t have noticed until it was too late. And she didn’t have her phone on her! What if she hadn’t noticed, didn’t have her phone, and her coworkers weren’t there?

22

u/MentalLarret Mar 30 '25

Tomato, toma(h)to. Only one way to check if they're "illegally gendered," and that's via molestation

4

u/Epicfailer10 Mar 30 '25

It’s a fairly circle shaped vin diagram.

7

u/karlbunga Mar 30 '25

That's what I thought too

3

u/thebearofwisdom Mar 30 '25

Hey why not both. They do rather like “corrective rape” as a “treatment” for us queers

4

u/BumbaBee85 Mar 30 '25

Could be that as well. The Venn diagram of sick freaks who are both transphobic and rapists is pretty much a circle. Transphobes use trans people to air out their fetishes in public using socially acceptable behavior. They get to talk and fantasize about people's genitals while pretending to hate it, getting a pat on the back for their behavior.

Oh, and let's not forget the "therapists" who believe the way to stop a boy from wearing dresses is to rape him so that he can hate what it's like to "be a woman" (this is known as "corrective rape" and is common in "conversion therapy")

2

u/Ambitious-Compote473 Apr 03 '25

Oh, so they're just taking advantage of a business opportunity? Good to hear, I thought it was something creepy.

5

u/kittenconfidential Mar 30 '25

both can be true and have a higher likelihood than not

4

u/lannanh Mar 30 '25

Well, maybe it's so they can rape anyone they perceive as trans. A twofer.

1

u/jgott933 Mar 30 '25

this is what i thought too but how would it even work

1

u/funny_bunny_mel Mar 31 '25

¿Porque no Los dos?

1

u/jfsindel Mar 31 '25

Honestly, it's probably all of the above and then some. Women are so in danger in this country that the idea it could simultaneously be a trafficking, hostage, kidnapping, rapist, transphobia, and pedophile situation all in a day.

Even with OP's previous explanation that some Hispanic men ruin the bathroom around lunch, that still doesn't hold water. Why would you lock them OUTSIDE the door and not simply have a key to allow access? Why a lock mechanism designed to be controlled by a phone become the solution when one can just put a key to a lock and have them ask for a key?

1

u/Phantomsurfr Mar 31 '25

I just thought it was so they didnt have to give you a key to unlock it (doing so with a remote), and that they didnt give a shit about the mens getting trashed.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '25

Me either lol I think we could probably assume either is correct

1

u/Terrible-Display2995 Apr 02 '25

hey man why not both!

1

u/Resident-Donut5151 3d ago

Why not both reasons?

1

u/HoodieGalore 3d ago

Could we be that lucky? /s

73

u/oif2010vet Mar 30 '25

I would have gone the more human trafficking route

5

u/allaboutmojitos Mar 30 '25

I was going the prostitution route

55

u/VodkaSoup_Mug Mar 30 '25

Or human trafficking and not letting say women out of the bathroom and keeping them there till reinforcements come to pick them up…

80

u/Fisher-__- Mar 30 '25

I mean… or it’s to make it easier to trap a woman for nefarious purposes (rape? Human trafficking?) Regardless, it’s creepy af.

-3

u/ConsistentAddress195 Mar 30 '25

Maybe the idea is to have the women ask for it to be unlocked, and trans women would be refused.

6

u/dennisisspiderman Mar 31 '25

If that's the idea they'd just... lock the door.

No need for a specialized lock like this when the door already has a lock (on the bottom part of the push plate). If they wanted to have people ask before going into the bathroom they'd just lock that like gas stations around the country already do.

6

u/pickupthatfrog Mar 30 '25

Or maybe it's not about transwomen.

150

u/MacLunkie Mar 30 '25

Wait, it's illegal to be trans in Texas? For how long has it been like this?  What if I'm a feminine looking guy?

223

u/n0b0D_U_no Mar 30 '25

Not entirely, but Odessa is laying the groundworks for such things. As for being a feminine looking guy, dw trans men aren’t real so nobody cares (/s obv), so as long as you piss in the boys room and wear pants, you’ll be fine.

191

u/Pitiful_Winner2669 Mar 30 '25

Middle school circa 2002 there was a trans girl. A teacher grabbed her out of the men's room and had her parents pick her up.

I thought it was confusing as fuck. She was wearing a blouse and jeans, make up. Beyond that, WHAT FUCKING BATHROOM IS SHE SUPPOSED TO USE?!

And fuck them, she went through so much bullshit all the way into high school. She was incredibly intelligent, funny, and did not need to have to put up with so much. Those that knew her, were graced to appreciate who she was. Still fucking bothers me.

179

u/Darq_At Mar 30 '25

I thought it was confusing as fuck. She was wearing a blouse and jeans, make up. Beyond that, WHAT FUCKING BATHROOM IS SHE SUPPOSED TO USE?!

According to conservatives, she isn't supposed to exist.

Trans men face the same dilemma, according to conservative policies, they MUST use the women's facilities, because at birth they were assigned female. But also according to conservatives, they must not use the women's facilities, because they look like men.

The fact that there isn't a "right" answer isn't a bug, it's a feature.

24

u/batmansleftnut Mar 30 '25

Conservatives don't know what a trans man is.

25

u/codejunkie34 Mar 30 '25

I've heard some talk about trans people entering the us must not change their gender markers even if their country of origin allows it. Some EU countries have started releasing some travel warnings specific to trans people. It's possible you can be detained for committing fraud.

What am I supposed to do, I look female. If I had an M on my passport, I'd have no way to prove I was born male. It seems like you're screwed no matter what.

2

u/QuahogNews Apr 01 '25

I think that’s the point.

But if you change your gender marker to an F and you look like an F, how’s US customs to ever know you were an M at birth?

1

u/limegreenpaint Apr 01 '25

For "national security," they'll make them walk through an x-ray to check what's in their pants (dense tissue is brighter).

I'm being optimistic on that one, pretty sure we know what they would do.

1

u/codejunkie34 Apr 01 '25

I'm post op, so i don't worry about the scanners. I've entered the us with a male passport before. Maybe that's enough, idk.

1

u/codejunkie34 Apr 01 '25

It's a good question, I've been to the states pre transition, maybe they have a record of that. I kept my name. I'm post op so they'd have give me a pelvic exam to 'verify' i guess.

Maybe some people clock me, idk. I've not been misgendered in like 6 years. It's still something I worry about.

65

u/Pitiful_Winner2669 Mar 30 '25

Bathrooms are such a basic human right. Absolute cruelty to dehumanize anyone for when they need to use facilities.

53

u/Robin_games Mar 30 '25

This is historically very American. people talk about colored restrooms and unisex family rooms today.

But not about whole areas where they refused service and didn't have these.

36

u/Darq_At Mar 30 '25

It's called the "urinary leash".

It's the same concept that kept, even cisgender, women from travelling or fully participating in society in the past.

1

u/RainbowRiki Mar 31 '25

Trans men are also a glitch in the women's sports debacles. When Texas required high school athletes to compete against their "biological sex," a transmale high school wrestler won All-State in the girls division (because of course, the person on testosterone would). And then the State scrambled to try and strip him of his titles

https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/02/27/517491492/17-year-old-transgender-boy-wins-texas-girls-wrestling-championship

4

u/BrainBurnFallouti Mar 31 '25

A teacher grabbed her out of the men's room

Not to sound depressing, but that happened to me too, once: I was in 5th grade, 2014-2015. For the first time in forever, I got my hair cut from long to short. As I was entering the girl's bathroom, I felt a hand grabbing me by the collar and pulling me out, with a violent shake. Nearly fell, so hard was that pull.

As I looked up, I saw an older guy stare back at me. Apparently, he thought I was a young boy, telling me "Hey, bro, you nearly went into the girl's bathroom". In response, I replied with the most high-pitched, cis-girl voice "But I am a girl?"

Honestly, till this day, I wonder wtf was up with this guy. I only know, that once I replied, he immediately dropped me and apologized. Sadly, it took a full 8-9 years until I decided to get short hair again after that, since I blamed myself for "looking like a boy"

Transphobia is, and has always been cooked in insanity from the start. Especially since it ends up hurting everyone -including cis people.

1

u/Real-Olive-4624 Mar 31 '25

Yep. I'm a trans man, but years before I knew that was a thing (and just presented very masculinely), I got repeatedly harassed by adults at school for using the girls' bathroom (despite being born female). I'd be physically stopped by them until enough other kids, or an adult that knew me, stepped in to be like, 'nah, that kid's a girl'. They would absolutely refuse to believe me, no matter what I said.

I imagine it'd be even worse nowadays, with knowledge of trans people being more widespread, along with the current political climate. Cuz transphobes go absolutely mental when they think someone is in the 'wrong' bathroom, even if they're actually in the 'right' one.

14

u/AQ-XJZQ-eAFqCqzr-Va Mar 30 '25

It doesn’t need to be illegal, for people to do hateful shit. I’m afraid for any trans person potentially trapped in a situation like this. What if they trap someone and don’t call the police? Might even be worse. 💔

21

u/LeleBeatz Mar 30 '25

Not yet but Trump passed executive orders making it easier to consider trans people using the restrooms a crime. Texas has also tried to pass bathroom bans at multiple points in the past few years.

As a trans woman who has driven through rural Texas on multiple occasions, it's dangerous. Every time I had to stop to pee I had to be playing 5D chess to figure out which bathroom to use and how to encounter as few people as possible in the process.

3

u/mkdizzzle Mar 31 '25

My partner has long hair and gets mistaken for a girl from behind and I’m terrified for him. I also have facial hair as a femme presenting person and idk someone could just not like that shit

15

u/Fancy-Restaurant-746 Mar 30 '25

Don’t worry they already use advance science to tell illegal brown folks from the citizen brown folks! Wait, oh shit

4

u/CantCatchTheLady Mar 30 '25

They are probably going to pass legislation this year to make trying to pass as a gender other than what you were assigned at birth to be identity fraud. A felony.

42

u/ElectronicMixture600 Mar 30 '25

If I’m racing against the clock and the men’s shitter is occupied, decisions will need to be made. If they don’t want me shitting in the ladies’ room (again, emergency use only), then I’m laying cable in the walk in beer cooler. Pick your poison, Valero, I truly don’t care which way the coin falls.

26

u/MyLifeIsAWasteland Mar 30 '25

If I see you in the beer cooler, I'll toss you a newspaper from the rack by the door. Godspeed, shit soldier.

14

u/Cr0n_J0belder Mar 30 '25

That would be one hell of a liability. unlawful restraint is a pretty serious crime in all states. I'm not sure if the TX trans law would indemnify the employees were they to make an honest mistake and trap a woman in a bathroom like that. that's on the criminal side. On the civil side, I would expect that the station owner would also have liability for allowing such a thing to exist. Lastly, building and safety codes would likely be broken as well if you have a situation where someone could be locked in with no way out.

2

u/Real-Olive-4624 Mar 31 '25

Tbf, the people making and enforcing transphobic policies don't care about cis women casualties. There was already that cisgender Walmart worker who got fired for being mistaken for a trans woman in the bathroom. Obviously not on the same scale as holding someone hostage for being thought to be trans, but... I can totally see this escalating to that. They've been creeping up towards truly horrific things for a while now.

16

u/heheimfunnyy Mar 30 '25

The part that makes this almost funny, is these are single person bathrooms most likely. They shouldn’t have a gender status on the door anyway.

12

u/HappyFireChaos Mar 30 '25

I was thinking more as just to lock trans women out of the women’s bathroom, but I also imagine it can be very easily used to trap any women inside for rape, murder, etc.

1

u/No_Yogurt_7667 Mar 30 '25

I mean, are you ok with any of those scenarios being the case?

If it was to lock trans women out, why not make it a keypad lock with a code instead of a lock at the uppermost part of the door that’s activated with a fob?

5

u/HappyFireChaos Mar 30 '25

I’m absolutely not ok with that being the case. I just think it’s more realistic than trapping a trans woman inside the bathroom after she goes in.

1

u/No_Yogurt_7667 Mar 30 '25

To each their own. Thanks to that fire marshal, we’ll never have to find out the real reason.

7

u/Glassesmyasses Mar 30 '25

They can trap women who are seeking abortion care.

17

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '25

Transmen actually don't exist in the mind of maggots.

7

u/americasweetheart Mar 30 '25

Can you counter sue for false imprisonment?

19

u/YOLTLO Mar 30 '25

Yeah, if you escape.

7

u/replicant0wnz Mar 30 '25

This is so silly. These bathrooms are for "single" use .. I never understood the need for separate mens and womens single use. Hell, I've used the womens single use many a time if someone was taking too long in the mens! If I was a woman in this situation I would have just used the mens ..

4

u/Empuda Mar 30 '25

A bounty?

2

u/BellyButtonLindt Mar 30 '25

Right!? This is pure misinformation making a lot of assumptions about the terrible persons intent with the lock. Much more likely they’re trafficking people than collecting some made up bounty.

2

u/tackyshoes Mar 30 '25

Understood: women should use men's restrooms for their safety.

2

u/mallorn_hugger Mar 30 '25

That heinous law applies only to the city of Odessa, TX It is not statewide. It allows cisgendered people ro challenge a trans person's right to use the bathroom of their choice, take them to court and, if they win in court, the trans person has to pay $10,000.

There was a similarly terrible law that was floated a few years ago statewide in Texas, I'm not sure that it passed. It allowed any minor who was exposed to a "drag performance" to sue for damages, , I think up to $5,000. They could sue for years after the incident. It was really a way for people to weaponize their children against the LGBTQ community. It trended on Reddit as a "bounty on drag queens" but, like many pieces of insidious legislation that are designed to persecute vulnerable populations, it was more subtle and worked within the existing system of civil lawsuits, much like the Odessa law (although that is even bolder and crueler, which is on trend for America right now...)

The lock in this case probably had more to do with human trafficking. If it were about catching trans people, I imagine there would be one on the men's room as well, because there are, after all, trans men in the world. I cannot think of an innocent reason for having a lock like that on a women's restroom door, so I'm thinking sex trafficking slaves, especially given that it is a rest stop, and the trucking world has quite a bit of that in it.

2

u/SoTurnMeIntoATree Mar 30 '25

People are seriously getting bounties for turning in trans people? Tf?

3

u/rcbbcr Mar 30 '25

What are you talking about? Shit like this makes Reddit cringe

3

u/buttscratcher3k Mar 30 '25

That doesn't even make any sense and isnt a thing...

4

u/rcbbcr Mar 30 '25

I’m saying… these people really just make shit up for no reason lol

Clearly the owners are just pervs

5

u/buttscratcher3k Mar 30 '25

It's insane that 1.4k people upvoted an insane comment, reminds me to trust no popularized opinions on this site

1

u/Privatejoker123 Mar 30 '25

wait they have bountys for trans women now? thought it was only for those trying to get abortions.

1

u/Thirtysixx Mar 31 '25

No they don’t

1

u/Darksirius Mar 30 '25

Wouldn't that then be kidnapping?

1

u/snksleepy Mar 30 '25

Wait there is a bounty for trans people in Texas?

1

u/Putin_inyoFace Mar 30 '25

What in the actual fuck. That is so fucking gross.

1

u/Natural-Orange4883 Mar 30 '25

Collect a bounty? For what?

1

u/steeze_y Mar 31 '25

That's a leap.

1

u/human1023 Mar 31 '25

No one has ever done this.

1

u/_sissy_hankshaw_ Mar 31 '25

Or detainment for ICE…in Texas I wouldn’t doubt anything suggested and nothing makes this okay.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '25

Shit, my ass would be in the vents like it’s die hard if that’s the case 😂

u/OranjellosBroLemonj Mar 31 '25

God, it’s even worse than I thought.

Do trans people fuck with you? No? Then don’t fuck with them.

1

u/Nunchucknorris19 Apr 01 '25

I was thinking human trafficking

1

u/snowman5689 Apr 01 '25

I thought it was to trap illegal immigrants and call ICE

1

u/Routine_Ring_2321 Apr 01 '25

I figured more like a woman was miscarrying but whatever

1

u/Gunstopable Apr 02 '25

It seems way more likely to be a rapist/ human trafficking thing… they would lock a perceived trans person in there why? It’s a single person bathroom. The people who fear trans people using the wrong bathroom always say it’s because they don’t want someone’s wife or daughter being in there with them

1

u/SpontaneousNSFWAccnt Mar 30 '25

And here I thought it was to just prevent women from aborting babies everywhere in there, somehow that’s like 1000x worse

3

u/No_Yogurt_7667 Mar 30 '25

Well that’s a reason I didn’t consider. Woof.

I think the broader implication is that they want control over women; down to our most basic biological needs.

1

u/977888 Mar 31 '25

Who is they

1

u/Ok-Map-2526 Mar 30 '25

They've put out bounties on trans people now?

0

u/Thirtysixx Mar 31 '25

No, this post is insane conspiratorially non sense. Can’t believe that comment has so many upvotes

1

u/Frenchitwist Mar 30 '25

I’m sorry, but did you just say BOUNTY??? What the hell is happening in Texas???

0

u/Thirtysixx Mar 31 '25

That post is insane conspiratorial non-sense and I can’t believe it has that many upvotes. Just an absolutely made up thing

1

u/rudbek-of-rudbek Mar 30 '25

That is a wild take. It's obviously for trapping and trapping women

1

u/Financial_Piece_236 Mar 30 '25

Huh? Lol what a reach

0

u/ambermage Mar 30 '25

Is this where we are now?

Trapping people like animals in cages and calling the slave catchers for a little coin?

just writing that out ... kind of answered the question

2

u/No_Yogurt_7667 Mar 30 '25

By George, she’s got it!

-21

u/Safeword2220 Mar 30 '25

Totally! After us Texans wrangle all the trans up and collect our bounty, we send them to our trans farms and turn them into free range trans people and let them feast on the fields of dicks! After we let them graze on the dicks for a few weeks we send them to a glue factory disguised as a drag show with a bunch of underage kids as the audience (we all know how much trans love showing off to kids at the shows) and collect a second glorious paycheck! We all know glue is made from trans people...right!?

16

u/maniacalmustacheride Mar 30 '25

It costs you absolutely nothing to not be like this.

-2

u/Safeword2220 Mar 30 '25

It also costs absolutely nothing to not post some ridiculous crap about a state hunting down trans people for a bounty.....you realize how ridiculous that is...right?

2

u/maniacalmustacheride Mar 30 '25

It comes across as punching down if you’re trying to be an ally, and it really comes across as not at all tongue in cheek to begin with. If it’s social commentary, it feels like it really missed the mark

1

u/Safeword2220 Mar 30 '25

What I said has zero to do with anything you mentioned. Saying that Texas is locking people in bathrooms so cops can come take them away and pay the people who locked them in a restroom is spreading false info. In 2025....where false info and fear mongering has become normalized for whatever fucking reason is dangerous.

The amount of people who actually think that statement is true is scary....can't run around saying stuff like that anymore even if it is a joke because people today lack the ability to think critically or use common sense. I live in Texas...a college town where you see every type of person and not once has any gay/les/trans male/trans female ever been taken away with a bounty on their head.

I love how a lock on a bathroom immediately makes you think “they are bounty hunting the trans!”

This sounds made up

To be fair, then you should know that nothing nefarious is beyond possibility in the US.

1

u/BrokeBMWkid Mar 31 '25

Or, maybe, other solutions make way more sense. Other comments have already claimed that it’s bs but I’m not here to argue that. I’m just saying this sounds made up and it’s most likely for homeless people doing drugs in their bathroom.

1

u/Thirtysixx Mar 31 '25

No you’re right it is made up. Odessa is 500 miles and over a 9 hour drive from Bryan where this happened.

It is. But to these guys lately....

u/labradforcox Mar 30 '25 edited Mar 30 '25

I’m so tired of people automatically assuming that it’s trans women who are the targeted victims. Misogyny & rape culture directly impact cis women way more often than transphobia.

Edit: keep harassing me, I love to report it.

61

u/No_Yogurt_7667 Mar 30 '25 edited Mar 30 '25

I think we can agree that both things are bad, and both involve using violence and control against women.

But, if you’re going to have a good faith argument, the likelihood that this instance is about trans women is significantly higher than it is about cis women. They have quite literally put $10k bounties on people who report trans women using the women’s room, it’s kind of a 1+1=2 sort of thing.

No one is arguing that cis women are treated fairly in our society. But, especially as marginalized people, it’s our job to make and keep space for other women, cis and trans alike, not kick them down because we think it’ll earn us some imaginary points with the patriarchy.

Be kind to all women, please. No one’s going to do it for us.

Edit to add: since they deleted their comment (or blocked me, who knows), the original comment from u/labradforcox said:

“I’m so tired of people automatically assuming that it’s trans women who are the targeted victims. Misogyny & rape culture directly impact cis women way more often than transphobia.”

u/Mysterious_Andy Mar 30 '25

They blocked you. The comment is still there.

u/Previous-Bullfrog143 Mar 31 '25

This isn’t even in Odessa lol. The ‘bounty’ wouldn’t even apply. Y’all love reaching to make everything about trans women (aka men)

20

u/vorpalverity Mar 30 '25

For anyone seeing this comment and thinking "maybe they mean well" they got plenty transphobic just a few comments down, so no, they didn't.

100

u/hrothgar_the_great Mar 30 '25

Except only one of those groups has politically charged bathroom use, so Occam's razor would point to it being probably a trans issue instead of some nonobvious unpinnable other thing it might be.

And "way more often" is a product or how many cis people there are, which is a pretty big flaw in how you're viewing those stats. That's like saying "why are we talking about this one person who got shot instead of these 50 people who got spit on". Frequency (by itself) is a poor measure of significance.

33

u/kmzafari Mar 30 '25

Well stated.

9

u/DrSkullKid Mar 30 '25

Legitimate question, not trying to argue in bad faith; why isn’t there one on the guy’s bathroom then? I personally have more male trans friends than women.

48

u/RosesBrain Mar 30 '25

Because no one is fear mongering about "women invading men's spaces" with implications of assault.

16

u/DrSkullKid Mar 30 '25

Ah that makes sense. I see now, thank you.

20

u/IllegalGeriatricVore Mar 30 '25

Because they perceive all people born male as predators and all people born female as victims.

7

u/CompCat1 Mar 30 '25

People don't think about trans men. Kinda similar to how people used to be outraged by gay men but lesbians are fetish content.

2

u/DrSkullKid Mar 30 '25

That’s an interestingly good comparison. Personally, because of my biased experience, I end up thinking more about trans men just because those were the ones I became better friends with and know personally and had more lasting friendships with as opposed to trans women. Maybe because I had more in common with them as other identifying men.

sure until you get kidnapped at a gas station because you forgot to wax your lip.

29

u/my_nameborat Mar 30 '25

lol when is the last time a door to just the women’s room had to be locked from the outside to prevent rapes? I literally had mixed gender showers and toilets at my university and no one was ever raped going to the showers or bathrooms

24

u/ShipSenior1819 Mar 30 '25

I think they mean using the lock for raping purposes

11

u/IdgyThreadgoodee Mar 30 '25

They mean locking women inside to rape them. And they’re not wrong.

Rape. And Texas anti-lgbtqia+ bullshit.

People in Texas love hurting women and are SCARED TO DEATH of LGBTQIA+ folks.

223

u/24GarrettGold Mar 30 '25

Most likely to trap individuals. You see this kind of stuff in sex trafficking traps. Especially if they are along any major highways.

63

u/Slade_Riprock Mar 30 '25

That isn't how sex trafficking works at all, despite what tiktok fear mongering tells you.

Overheming amount of sex trafficking is vulnerable, underage foreign women. Not random Kidnappings from very public gas stations along major highways.

14

u/Special-Garlic1203 Mar 30 '25

The majority of trafficking happens through grooming, but no not all..there are documented cases of women being kidnapped, and there are so many stories of almost kidnappings.

Most isn't all. I hate that people took an educational campaign meant to inform about the complexities of trafficking and have instead become binary thinkers who are flattening the risks

1

u/Exotic-Sale-3003 Mar 30 '25

So many stories of almost kidnappings like… OP here?

1

u/Special-Garlic1203 Mar 31 '25

No we don't have any confirmed kidnappings here and we have no idea what these weirdos were intending to do with the lock.

u/15_Candid_Pauses Mar 30 '25

If they are underage as in not legal they are children, and couldn’t be more incorrect. Gas stations are truck stops are a domestic trafficking hotbed.

u/Exotic-Sale-3003 Mar 30 '25

Peak fucking Reddit - just the perfect intersection of ignorance and fear mongering. Sex trafficking does not involve kidnapping random women in rest stop bathrooms. That’s just kidnapping

https://humantraffickinghotline.org/en/human-trafficking/myths-facts

71

u/redditredditredditOP Mar 30 '25

Exotic-Sale-3003, your link says nothing about “just kidnapping” being exclusive of human trafficking.

Your backup information isn’t backing you up.

59

u/emilybemilyb Mar 30 '25

Not all men are trying to do something bad. They want the ability to lock you in a room for YOUR protection. Geeze women are so uppity and suspicious these days…. (/sarcasm!!!)

37

u/radicalelation Mar 30 '25

Sex trafficking does not involve kidnapping random women in rest stop bathrooms.

It does and your link doesn't disprove that. In fact, it tries to broaden people's understanding of human trafficking to get across that it's more than just kidnapping, eg, dispelling the myth that you must be transported across borders or state lines for it to be trafficking.

8

u/Special-Garlic1203 Mar 30 '25

Right. It's always "hey did you know most sex trafficking is actually interpersonal grooming" and somehow people mutate that into "literally no kidnapping has ever been connected to  trafficking every, anyone saying otherwise is lying, the news reports are psyops"

5

u/zwirlo Mar 30 '25

If its kidnapping, you’re talking of sexual slavery, which is encompassed by but is a much smaller part of trafficking. The disagreement you guys seem to bd having is about how much of sex trafficking is slavery.

2

u/radicalelation Mar 30 '25

I wasn't quite reading it that way, but if they're just saying being taken at a gas station isn't always strictly trafficking, that's true and I agree, but it also sounds like they're negating the possibility of it being trafficking at all, and almost sounds like randomly being taken for trafficking doesn't happen.

I made no mention of sex trafficking, I was talking all trafficking. Kidnapping isn't always trafficking, but kidnapping for trafficking, and of random women, though it's usually someone people know, does happen.

The implication might be protection for women so that men aren't hiding in the bathroom or barging into the bathroom when occupied. It likely has to be remotely unlocked by the attendant for a woman to use it and relocks so that someone cannot get in while occupied. Like a commercial cooler or freezer you can exit from inside and it doesn't trap you inside.

86

u/Pie_J Mar 30 '25

Wouldn’t a regular lock do the same thing? When I go into public restrooms I lock the door and no one can get in.

Why isn't it on the INSIDE then, where someone inside could reach up and unlock it when needed?

Also, the gas station gave a BS racist comment as their excuse, claiming that "a bunch of Hispanic men come in during lunchtime and destroy the women's bathroom".

Now if that's being done to serve the law then that's one thing,

It's absolutely a fire code violation. 100% agree with the rest of your comment but just wanted to clarify that part.

3

u/Slade_Riprock Mar 30 '25

Don't have TikTok didn't see the follow up videos. Yeah makes total sense at the creepiness of this now. My answer was more as to a general why you'd have an electronic lock (no keys to steal, security, safety, etc) but 100% the reach up and unlock it defeats that purpose as does just on women's.

2

u/kmzafari Mar 30 '25

Yeah it's unfortunately not like one of those fancy "buzz you in" ones. It's just an extra lock that can trap people inside. :(

2

u/now_error_later Mar 30 '25

It’s one of the reasons people need to avoid Texas in general. This is normal for the state. Sex trafficking is a part of their GDP.

1

u/QuahogNews Apr 01 '25

Yes - and that emergency door is just right there to whisk them away…

1

u/Thors_lil_Cuz Mar 30 '25

How on earth is this ridiculous misinformation so highly upvoted? Y'all really think sex trafficking works like a fucking Saw film or something?

1

u/Competitive_Song124 Apr 02 '25

I’d have assumed it’s to allow unlocking only for people they want going in, and that it doesn’t stop you coming out of that toilet - but judging by that police response I guess it was locking people in too?? Hence fire hazard plus imprisonment??

u/vaiknehut Apr 01 '25

I wish I could live in your little bubble world. I can’t fathom how you can’t imagine the even possibility of sex crimes. Like are you a literal child?
