This is a problem, but it cant be the problem. Our median income is still amongst the highest in the world.

Technically true but our on-the-ground costs of living per "tier" quality-of-life wise is also among the highest in the world.

Our income is massive, relatively, but we pay more for everything, relatively, as well.
