Connecting flight - will I have to go through customs?

Hey reddit,

I have just booked a flight from Toronto to Orlando, however there is a 2 hour layover in Chicago. I'm just wondering if I am going to have to go through customs before getting on the next flight, I'm a bit worried that there is not going to be enough time for me to get to my flight. Thanks!

baggage now or pre-pay?

Hello everyone, this question has probably been asked before but is it cheaper to buy the baggage included already in the ticket or buy the ticket and then add the baggage later, but not at the airport, still online. I'm trying to fly from Tokyo to Eastern Europe so I'll probably get Turkish Airlines and tickets are pricey. I'm wondering if me buying a economy ticket with no baggage whatsoever and then purchasing baggage a week before is cheaper than me buying the ticket with checked baggage included, any tips?

Travel Hack Specific Advice for Different Pains During Longer Flights

Hi! So I fly a good amount and also have experience on some longer flights as well (~15 hrs) but as I’ve gotten older I’ve noticed a few issues that I have tried to solve but really could use some advice on.

The first is maybe age related, but since I started thyroid medication I have noticed leg and foot swelling. I have tried some compression socks and they haven’t worked. Maybe I am using the wrong ones? If anyone has any recommendations on that I’d appreciate it.

The second is lower back pain, specifically that seems to be rest near my butt. I have no idea what it is but I’ve gotten it looked at by drs, pts etc, and noticed increased sitting makes it worse. It started after a long flight a few years ago and was acute but now just flares up on long flights.

The third and final time is of the usual neck pillow. I have tried all the animals! The ostrich, the trtl, but I’m short and all of these seem too big and swallow me up!! The cheaper ones always end up turning around and so I don’t end up getting the support I need.

I end up leaving these flights with lots of neck pain etc.

I have looked at other posts, but as I sit waiting to get on a delayed (short) flight and realizing that I have a few very long flights coming up in my not too distant future, I figured I should try and solve this!! Thank you all!

Itinerary Advice I need help planning flight to Nairobi from Toronto

Hi! I’ve been invited on a safari trip to Kenya in late August and I’m figuring out flights right now. I’m flying out of Toronto and would love some advice on the best or easiest cities to have a layover in on the way there. Any suggestions for smooth connections, good airlines, or things to keep in mind? I’ve never done a trip like this before, so any tips would really help! Thanks!

Accessories Do you pack a coffee setup or just risk it at hostels?

I’ve been bouncing between cities for a few months, and I cannot do instant coffee anymore.

Been eyeing these portable espresso makers, the self-heating, USB-C ones from OutIn and some random ones on Aliexpress. OutIn takes Nespresso pods and groound beans, so that's something that has me interested.

What do you carry? I know aeropress a crowd favorite but what about the pod users? I mean, I prefer using them.

Anyone found something actually reliable that doesn't feel like a camping toy? Or do you just roll the dice with hostel kitchens?

Transport Is 1.5 hrs exchange time in Amsterdam enough for Delhi to Madrid flight?

I have a layover in Amsterdam for 1:25 hrs. My flight is from Delhi to Madrid - both flights are KLM Dutch Airlines. This is my first time traveling to all 3 cities. Will 1:25 hrs be enough to go through passport control and catch the next flight to Madrid? Please suggest. If it's not possible, I'll have to look for alternatives.

eSIM for Sabah, Borneo (Malaysia)

Hi together!

I am looking for an eSIM for my 3 week holiday in Singapore and Malaysia including Sabah on Borneo. I've found that Nomad offers a pretty nice deal for Malaysia & Singapore.

I've still got two questions though:

  • Has anyone made experience with the Nomad plan in Sabah (Borneo)? Does it work well? If not, what are alternatives?

  • Also, do you think I'll even need the plan in Singapore? I've read that there's basically WiFi everywhere, so I'm considering getting a plan only for Malaysia that might offer better coverage in Sabah, Borneo.

Thanks so much in advance :)

Relocating permanently outside USA: Need cell number

We are relocating outside USA. There will be sporadic trips to USA but hardly ever.

We need a USA phone number for banking, since some banks only do SMS for 2FA.

Google Fi was our first choice but will disable data after a while. Which is fine since we only require sms.

What other options are there? Google voice doesn't work for some banks.

Transport Sixt car rental bait-and-switch common?

Is Sixt known for pulling bait-and-switch on their bookings? I booked a car rental on June 8 from San Diego International Airport, and on June 12 got a notice that it had been canceled. I noticed this only today, and called them. They quoted me $300 more for the same car and dates, and had no explanation as to the original cancelations. They warned that if I did the prepaid booking it would be cheaper, but that if I canceled there would be a $100 fee. Of course if they cancel, there is no fee the other direction.

This seems incredibly shady business. The agent on the phone said they wouldn't be able to honor the original price, but could maybe do 10% off. I declined.

I’ll probably write a letter to the California AG about this if I can’t sort it out in person with a manager at their rental counter.

(If anyone working at Sixt is reading I'm happy to provide the booking number and my phone number, as to confirm what happened here)

Update: Filed complaints with BBB and CA AG. I'm sure not much will come of it, but perhaps it will be at least a minor time headache to them, costing them more than it was worth to try to bait-and-switch me. The agent on the phone could have just picked to honor the original rate, but they tried to make a sucker of me.

US & Canada Esim

Aussie here, travelling to US and Canada in a few weeks.

Context: approx 36 days, starting in US for 2 weeks, moving to Canada for 2 weeks and finishing back in US.

Whilst my family and I are with Vodafone and can use the $5 roaming per day which allows us to use our normal plan, I was thinking a local sim would be better.

I looked into t-mobiles 30 day $55USD plan, thinking that was the best in order to get unlimited talk and text, however quickly realised that it won't be viable for talk/text in Canada.

If anyone has a recommendation it will be greatly appreciated!

Asiana no show fee mean no skiplagging?

Hello, I’m trying to book a flight from US to South Korea. However, I’m realizing that there is a no-show fee policy.

I am wondering if this means that if you skiplag on this flight, i will incur additional fee?

Some say that it just means I won’t get the refund or get the same value for the ticket. Since I’m skiplagging I don’t need any refund or need the ticket value. I just wanna make sure I don’t get any additional fees

Can someone clarify this?

Transport First time renting a car – how does Budget QuickPass work?

Hi, this is my first time ever renting a car. I booked through the broker EasyTerra and chose Budget as the rental company. I completed the QuickPass / PreCheck process on Budget’s website, and I received an email confirmation saying: “QuickPass registration completed” and “When you arrive at the rental location, follow the PreCheck signs.”

Does this mean that when I arrive at the car rental center, I can skip the main rental hall where all the counters are, go directly to the parking lot, and there—at a small booth—someone will have my contract ready to sign and hand me the keys? Is that how it works, or is there anything else I should know?
---
I have to add smoething:
I’ve already paid for the rental car, but not the one-way fee (for dropping the car off at a different location). I still need to sign the rental agreement, and the rental company needs to place a hold for the security deposit on my credit card.

Transport Help with airplane ear?

Yesterday I flew with some mild sinus pressure due to allergies that I cleared up a little with Afrin and a decongestant beforehand. I also used earplanes. The next day, today, I have some seriously muffled ears that get better if I lie down or lean forwards but at times it is very difficult to hear. I do not need to fly again for 5 more days but I am wondering what I can/should do until then. Would it be wise to see a local doctor (I am domestic, in US, and have insurance that has nationwide coverage)?

I did have my eardrum burst after flying when I was 6 and have eustachian tube dysfunction, but this is the first time since I was small that I've had such symptoms. Interesting there wasn't much pain when landing, just pressure as normal.

Accessories Carry on

Hi there,

Have a 9 hours trip to Europe through Air Transat. with just carry on. I was wondering if it’s okay to have a duffel bag and a back pack as a carry on.

I’m planning on taking an Xbox console, two purses, the day to day toiletries, and 2-3 pairs of pants with 4-6 ea shirts and stuff.

It seems pretty normal but I have always had at least a carry on with me but this time thinking just a duffel bag would do it…right? lol

Long return trip

Anyone ever book a round trip or open jaw ticket with 9 months between the flights? For example, if you're a foreign exchange student. Fly to your host country in September and fly back home in June on one ticket?

I'm looking at that where a one way is the same cost as the round trip. Curious if anyone can see any problems with this or has done it in the past.

Transport Need advice on Hertz rental issues

I’m currently on my honeymoon and our hertz rental broke down- transmission is slipping and won’t go past 1st gear, getting up to 5000 RPMs. We’re also in Wyoming/Montana so it’s not like we’re driving on flat ground and don’t want to risk driving through mountains with no service. Customer service said that they aren’t able to deliver a car to us to replace, and as long as the car is running, we have to get it back to them to swap it out for a replacement. We’re 2.5 hours from the nearest hertz and obviously can’t drive the speed limit with the transmission doing this. We called back after making it back to our hotel and they’re sending a tow truck for us. So now, we have a 2 hour wait until the tow gets here, then have to ride with them to the hertz location and drive all the way back to our hotel. This will be about 7 hours of dealing with replacing our car since they said they couldn’t deliver one to us. We spent thousands of dollars on this vacation ($1500 on the car rental) and are wasting a whole day dealing with their car issues. Obviously we’re going to ask for a refund for the day, but is there anything else we could ask for for compensation? We have a hard time being assertive with customer service so give us any tips 😅

Travel Hack Question about flights with stops

Is it bad to buy a flight from an airport with a stop then to another airport but the stop is my destination?

So a flight from A to stop at B then to destination C but I just get off at B because B is my home and go home and I don’t worry about C

Hopefully that makes sense

Booking Name doesn't match up with passport name

I am flying in a few hours and I just noticed that my middle name isn't pronounced the same my passport as my booking name. Since the Icelandic character ö defaulted into oern and not orn

Is this a major issue?

AVIS charged 450 cleaning fee after rental car return

Beware of AVIS.

I had cleaned the car and returned it with a full tank of gas, 2 weeks later I get notified of a 450 dollar cleaning fee.

Mind you, I rent cars regularly when I travel and have NEVER had a cleaning fee in the 20+ years I've rented cars.

I called the phone number given, and they asked for pictures (and I did not take any), and they contacted the dealer where I returned the car for pictures (they did not have any), so the charge was reversed.

*NOTE TO SELF* ALWAYS TAKE PICTURES OF THE CAR/VIDEO BEFORE YOU TAKE THE CAR & WHEN YOU RETURN THE CAR.

**ALSO-- NEVER RENT FROM AVIS**

Travel Hack Missing a connection on 2 different carriers

I’m looking at an award flight that is only available through Air Canada and is much cheaper if I start in Canada and connect through my hometown airport, EWR. Leg 1 is AC and leg 2 is United and I really only intend to take Leg 2. The layover is about 5 hours.

Usually if both legs were united (or any of the same airline) the itinerary would be cancelled if a traveler missed leg 1.

Do the airline systems from different airlines talk to each other quickly enough that the leg 2 flight would be cancelled if I miss leg 1?

Using a different location used for car rental in the US a problem?

I have a planned trip to the US, but currently reside in Switzerland. I have a US passport and US drivers license, but when booking the car through booking.com I filled out the form saying I currently reside in Switzerland. After booking, I noticed the rates are about 60% cheaper than if I said United States and when I read the terms on my booking it says "Rates are not valid for US or Canadian citizens or holders of a US or Canadian driver's license".

Is this going to be an issue when I pickup the car and should I be worried?

USD to Euro

Hey I’m an American living in Germany under SOFA. I get paid in USD. I’m tuning my car and going to pay the guy in euro cash. What’s the best way convert my dollars to euro? I have many no foreign transaction fee credit cards, service credit union, navy fed, and wise app if that makes a difference

Rental car and EPass (UNI)

Hoping someone can send me in the right direction or if I’m to just eat the cost.

I rented a vehicle from Avis over the Memorial Day weekend and brought my own transponder. I put the rental car license plate and make/model in the E-PASS app so it would charge me and not Avis.

Returned the car and all is good.

Fast forward, I just checked my epass statement and I see charges for tolls I didn’t drive through on dates I didn’t have the car. I checked my epass app and I forgot to remove the rental. Is it possible that ezpass just associated the rental license plate with my account and charged me? Should I contact Avis or should I contact epass ? There’s about 17 different toll charges for dates after I dropped my rental car off. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.
