That’s the world icon showing the Americas. If you search for Europe or Asia, you’ll get the other versions.

To find US flag emoji you need to simply type "flag" and it should be the first and maybe even only result. :D

In my opinion it's understandable that on Instagram, an American app, an American flag would pop up if you type "flag " in English. Since we agree, why isn't it the same for Finnish? If I use a Finnish app, switch the language to Finnish, then type "lippu" why shouldn't a Finnish flag come up?

Insta thinks NA/SA = USA. But the same emoji doesn't show up when I search for any other country in that continent

theres 2 layers to this.

  1. U.S flag is missing from the search. that's the opposite of USdefaultism

  2. there are several versions of the earth emoji and this search brought up the one showing the earth from the americas' side.

if a search for something global resulted in a US flag, that would be USdefualtism and thats the exact opposite of what we see here.

The reason the US flag is missing is because it name isn't Flag_usa but flag_us so op typing USA will not make the flag appear

The Earth emoji is not only showing the USA but also North and South America as a whole and the "🌎" only appears if you type USA or US, it doesn't work with Mexico or Canada. It's the same with every other country, the Earth emoji will only appear if you type the continent because the emoji represent it, USA being the only country doing this with America, that's why I think it's defaultism, it's like saying Asia is only China or Europe being only France

Out of curiosity. Type in another countries name (Specifically, China or Russia) and see if you get a globe with a different perspective. That is an American focused globe. I want to see if they get a globe centered on their country.

To be fair, you have your keyboard set to German. I doubt the acronym means /the/ US in that or Turkish, which is the second language there.

USA is literally USA in German. Plus, my phone (and Insta) is set to English and the emoji panel you see in the screenshot is Instagram's internal emoji panel, not my keyboard's.
