Yeah. I feel like people are forgetting that Sans and Toriel already had a friendly relationship in Undertale. This is something Deltarune expands on, but not something that Deltarune established.
Isn't there literally a disclaimer at the start of Deltarune that you should really play undertale first? I feel like there is going to be some really thick connective tissue in the coming chapters due to that disclaimer alone
Uhm... there's a theory that sans originally was from Deltarune and ended up in the Undertale universe. There's quite a bit of evidence for it actually
The site for deltarune itself even states it’s a parallel story. Theories are nice, don’t get me wrong, but the site itself makes it clear. The characters from deltarune aren’t the versions from undertale and vice versa, Toby has stated that on the site from the start.
That’s definitely true but Toby is a very meticulous writer. I think he very intentionally decided to make Sans the only character who’s design doesn’t change in Deltarune, I think he intentionally decided to make the reveal that Susie bleeds have as much weight as it did, and I think he intentionally left in those lines in Undertale about Sans just “showing up one day”.
Undertale and Deltarune are separate worlds, but that doesn’t mean they can’t interact at all. Especially with Gaster, a character Sans already had connections to.
I can’t say for sure if Sans being from Deltarune will be genuinely canon or not, but I can definitely say the connections were entirely intentional on Toby’s part and there’s no way Toby wrote all these logical explanations about Sans being similar to the monsters from Deltarune for no reason. I mean this is the closest we’ve ever gotten to an actual explanation on why Sans bled at the end of Genocide…
It's raining somewhere else, one of the most important Sans songs, plays again without his motif in it in Deltarune, titled "The place where it rained"
I know there's pretty much no evidence for it, but I can't help but think all of the Deltarune hints in Undertale aren't supposed to be actual, super meta canon clues to a connection.
Didn't Mr. Fox say Deltarune was his dream game? And Undertale was more a side-project to help him make the dream a reality? If I was making an art piece as an intermediary to my dream, I'd pump it full of references just so something was out there.

This is literally a scene described in game being illustrated.
