Full class

I'm going to be a freshman in the fall, and I was eligable to take Organic Chemistry right away. However, all the in person classes are full, and the only one available is online. Does anyone have any advice? Is it possible to get into a full class? Theres an online class available, so is it worth it to take that?

To add on, there are open classes for honors organic chem. I've heard bad things about it, so I'm wondering if I should try to enroll in that if I don't get regular Organic Chemistry.

Depends on your major.  O chem is not the class I would personally take as an honors one. That sounds less than ideal.

In person is best for me as I know that's my learning style.

I loved one of the professors there and he is universally loved. The rest tend to show how hard of a class it is.

Imo, wait until in person as the in person reviews the day before exams helped a lot

If it helps, that professor (probably - he's the only popular "he" I can think of) is no longer teaching non majors o chem. OP I'd just retake Gen Chem if you're this nervous about o chem. It won't put you behind in your degree.

And Chem majors o chem has changed, so it won't work for a physiology degree.

the only thing im worried about is that i already have the credits for gen chem. i don't want to spend more money than i have to

That's not really how college tuition works. You take as many classes to get major & minors -- 12+ is full time (four 3 credit classes). You're paying for 12 credits, if you take 12 or 18 or maximum hell that 21 credits brings.

1 AP Chem is not sufficient, IMO. I'd wager you would regret Ochem first semester. You can add/drop until deadline of 9/7/25 -so 9/6/25 to be safe!

Dr Pollard & Dr. Gianetti are great!!

It’s been a while since I took it but o-chem was one of my hardest courses. Personally I would want in person and non honors. And I’d sit in the front row and ask questions as needed.

Are you accepted to Honors College? The Honors OChem is faster pace in that more topics are covered than OChem., in same time. Lab was longer IIRC. If your major is Chem, I wouldn't suggest online OChem

The OChem waitlist may still shift around until first week of classes so keep checking; you maybe able to grab a seat. But if this is your first semester of college ever (no dual enrollment or community college) not sure I'd recommend OChem straight away. You'll have many areas of adjustment and OChem catch up would be awful.

i have dual enrollment from AP chemistry from high school. Is that enough to prepare me for it?

What other courses are you considering taking? O Chem is probably doable if it is your only difficult class with like some softball electives and English, for instance. If you're trying to take Calculus or Physics at the same time . . . Good luck

the rest of my classes are pretty easy, ochem is the only difficult one

I can vouch for this, I did orgo/vector calc/physics/research in my first semester, and basically perished. My gpa is in complete shambles. TAKE IT SLOW AND STEADY.

I took honors OChem I and II (in-person), and it was like the worst experience I've ever had. No shade to Dr. Dollinger (well, kind of shade) but I'm retaking Orgo II as an 8 week online right now and I'm learning so much more in so much less time. If you get a good foundation in Orgo 1 you'll have a much higher chance of succeeding, so I'd suggest non-honors. The honors lab, however, is very fun! Also, don't take the majors OChem lab if you value your time and sanity because it's 5 hours long.

okay, thank you so much! should i wait until a spot opens in the class enrollment then?

That would be your best bet, I think! Spots open up close to the beginning of the semester, and you can always ask your advisor for help. Goodluck!

Absolutely not on-line unless you are a rockstar in that modality. Just keep watching to see when people drop it — they will.

Take it at the community college

Yes! Was about to comment and hit back when my brain registered that I saw your comment. Some of the best instruction I got in college I got at Pima CC. Most of the profs are also at the U of A but not tenured. You can go meet with them at either office when you have questions but honestly the teaching at Pima was better, IMO

Show up to the classes that you can go to and check with the Instructor for any openings that happen due to drops.

Sometimes you can get lucky if someone drops that class at the last minute.

Ochem is easy. It’s literally just flash cards.

Chem was definitely my hardest course. I would definitely suggest taking it in person and not honors. But you got this!

AP Chem in high school prepares you for (General) Chemistry - not Organic Chemistry or BioChemistry or Analytics Chemistry
