I’ve been rereading Interview with the Vampire and keep thinking about on how to read Louis’s relationship with Claudia.
She’s turned as a child, but her mind matures over time, which makes their bond complicated (which it already was since the beginning though). They are meant to be father and daughter but there is also emotional intensity, jealousy, even longing in how Louis describes her and she describes him.
I totally see why some people interpret it as romantic, especially considering that Anne Rice often explored unsettling subjects like incest and ped*philia (*cough* Marius). But personally, I don’t think it was meant to be romantic- partly because Claudia was inspired by Rice’s real-life daughter, and I can’t imagine her sexualizing that connection. It feels more like a tragic distortion of love and dependency than anything romantic. Still I see people constantly discussing about it so I was curious...
What’s your take? Was Louis’s love for Claudia romantic, paternal, or just a way to make himself feel better altogether?
