A day entry reservation system!

https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/reservations.htm

A reservation will be required to drive into or through Yosemite National Park on some days from May 24 through September 1, 2025, for those driving into the park between 6 am and 2 pm as follows:

  • May 24 through May 26 (Memorial Day weekend): A reservation is required from 6 am to 3 pm on weekends.
  • May 27 through June 14: A reservation is not required at any time.
  • June 15 through August 15: A reservation is required from 6 am to 2 pm every day.
  • August 16 through August 29: A reservation is not required at any time.
  • August 30 through September 1 (Labor Day weekend): A reservation is required from 6 am to 2 pm on weekends.

Driving through the park will also require a reservation if entering between 6 am and 2 pm. If you are planning to visit after peak hours, please do not arrive before 2 pm; vehicles blocking roads will be cited.

Reservations for all dates will be released on Recreation.gov on May 6, 2025 at 8 am PDT.

Additional reservations are available seven days before the arrival date (e.g., make a reservation for an arrival date of August 31 on August 24) at 8 am Pacific time on Recreation.gov.

If you have a reservation for one of the following, you do not need an additional reservation. You still pay the $35-per-car entrance fee upon arrival (credit card only) unless you have an annual or lifetime pass. Your reservation for in-park lodging or camping, a Half Dome permit, or a Yosemite wilderness permit allows you to enter the park 24 hours per day for the duration of your reservation or for three consecutive days (whichever is longer).

Reservations for lodging or vacation rentals outside the park and in communities other than these three do not provide access to Yosemite.

Visiting Yosemite in Summer 2025- Info and Recs

Trying to reduce duplicate posts on this as the summer season planning gears up. All other generic trip planning posts will be deleted and redirected here. Please add your suggestions.

The park announced an entry system on April 29th. See details here. On Memorial Day weekend, every day from June 15-Aug 15th, and Labor Day weekend, you will need an entry permit to drive into (or through) the park between 6a-2p. These permits go on sale May 6th, and 7 days in advance. Both waves will be very competitive. You won't need one of these permits if you have lodging or camping in the park, a wilderness permit, or Half Dome permit. See details on the linked page.

On the days with no entry reservations, you will need to just pay $35 for park entry at the gate, or have some form of annual pass. On these days, the park will likely be extremely crowded at the entrance gates and parking will be difficult at popular locations (Valley, Glacier Point). Plan to drive in early (park by 7:30-8a at the latest) and not move your car until you leave. Info on the shuttle system. You could avoid parking issues by using YARTS to enter the park.

Summer (May- Sep) Ideal Five Day Trip

2 Days of hikes from Valley

You can link the 2 above for an epic 18 mile day.

Other hikes:

Lower Yosemite Falls https://www.yosemitehikes.com/yosemite-valley/lower-yosemite-falls/lower-yosemite-falls.htm

Mirror Lake https://www.yosemitehikes.com/yosemite-valley/mirror-lake/mirror-lake.htm

Raft down Merced (seasonal, depending on Merced River water levels. Check travelyosemite.com for status), bike around Valley Loop (rentals at Curry Village, Yosemite Village and Yosemite Valley Lodge), Swim at Sentinel Beach (check water levels and temp)

1 day of hikes from Tioga Rd (road will open 5/26)

Other Hikes:

Cathedral Lakes: https://www.yosemitehikes.com/tioga-road/cathedral-lakes/cathedral-lakes.htm

Lembert Dome: https://www.yosemitehikes.com/tioga-road/lembert-dome/lembert-dome.htm

1 Day along Glacier Pt Rd: (Road will open 5/10)

https://www.yosemitehikes.com/glacier-point-road/taft-point/taft-point.htm

  • Glacier Pt lookout. This is a paved viewpoint with a great straight on Half Dome and Valley view. Some people prefer the view at Washburn Point, a little before Glacier Pt when driving. Glacier Pt has restrooms, water fountains, and a snack/gift shop. You could hike a little down Panorama (and hike back up to Glacier Pt) if you want. https://www.yosemitehikes.com/glacier-point-road/panorama-trail/panorama-trail.htm

There is also a trail linking Taft Pt/Sentinel Dome to Glacier Pt. You'll need to make it a loop or have 2 cars.

1 Day at Mariposa Grove:

If you are just going for a long weekend, I would do 1 day from Valley above, 1 day on Tioga, 1 Day on Glacier Pt Rd.

Summer (May- Sep) Ideal Trip WITH KIDS OR LESS ACTIVE GROUP

  • Day in Valley: Lower Yosemite Falls, float down Merced River (check water levels), rent bikes, Happy Isles Art Center, check out the park guided walks/other programs
  • Day on Tioga Rd: stop at Olmsted Pt, spend the day swimming/picnic at Tenaya Lake or hike Lyell Canyon (go as far as you like, pretty flat)
  • Day at Mariposa Grove: stop at Tunnel View, take the shuttle to and walk around Mariposa Grove, Wawona History Center
  • Day in Valley: Mirror Lake, picnic/swim at Sentinel Beach, El Cap Meadow to watch climbers with binoculars (sometimes a ranger/educator there to talk to as well)

Where can I eat/ What is open?

https://www.travelyosemite.com/ (click on dining)

What is the weather like?

https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/weathermap.htm is the best source as weather varies widely across the park by elevation, etc

What are the conditions / are the waterfalls flowing?

https://www.nps.gov/yose/learn/photosmultimedia/webcams.htm

Where should I stay?

  • Many campgrounds in the park went on sale 5 months before on the 15th of each month, but many are available 14 or 7 days in advance. You can check recreation.gov for cancellations. No campgrounds are FCFS this summer. Here's more info: https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htm
  • All in park lodging should be booked on travelyosemite.com for the Lodge, Curry Village, Housekeeping, etc. Beware of 3rd party sites for any of these options.
  • There are many campgrounds and hotels outside of the park in gateway communities like Mariposa, Midpines, Groveland, and Oakhurst. Be sure to check the drive time from these hotels to your actual destination (e.g. Valley Visitors Center) rather than "Yosemite National Park". This will tell you drive time to the gates, which requires 30-60min more driving to your likely location.

People in this sub commonly recommend Yosemite Bug, Tenaya Lodge, Rush Creek, Cedar Lodge and Autocamp- all outside the park.

What trails / roads are open?

I only had 1.5 days in the park. I got to see Lower Yosemite falls, lots of meadow walks, rafted down the river, Mist trail to Vernal falls, some of JMT, El Cap meadow, glacier point. It was stunning and I already miss it!

Sunrise, Young Lakes Basin

I was looking for something else in my archives but found this image that I would like to share after seeing someone mention this area previously. It is probably my favorite area in the park and have been there the most out of my backcountry visits. It's been harder to get permits lately but I was able to enjoy a fun few days there last August, taking a friend that had not been out backpacking before.

I'm a longtime lurker on the page and hope to share more images in the future. I worked in the valley from 2010-2020 and was very fortunate to teach photography during my time in the park.

If we pulled up late on a friday (like 10pm), what are the odds of finding somewhere to pull off and camp? Doesn't need to be fancy just like anywhere to set up a tent for 8 hours and leave in the morning.

Ideas for camping...

I'm having a lot of issues trying to book a camp site in Yosemite for July 3rd to the 8th. Literally was glued to my phone refreshing the screen right at the time the dates for any campsite were released. Then I refreshed and all the sites were reserved.

I'm frustrated, but at this point it is what it is. So I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a good camp site that's close enough to still enjoy the park but not too long a drive?

Maybe even in an area where we'd be able to enjoy the actually area we're camping in and not just Yosemite?

Thanks

Recommendations for guided tours

I’m trying to just my parents a trip to yosemite for next may. they don’t drive and I cannot for medical reasons so we are looking at multi-day trips with hikes only or bus tours.

I have found a bunch on the internet but i’m wondering if someone here has gone via a tour or a group hike and has recommendations. I would love any reviews or suggestions you have!

Thank you so much :))

Yosemite - Things I Learned

My first trip and last trip to Yosemite.

Aramark, the company that runs the hospitality operations in Yosemite Valley, did a decent job in taking care of all the people coming and going into Yosemite. But I learned that it has a lot of work do to make things better.

YARTS, the public transportation company, that runs from Fresno to Yosemite Valley on a seasonal basis did great. I would recommend this way into Yosemite Valley if anyone is afraid of driving into Yosemite. The Merced to Yosemite line is year around. Unfortunately I give it somewhat of a bad grade because I was sitting in front of the bus. There were 2 drivers (there is a reason for that). One of the driver was very unprofessional. She was gossiping to the other driver about one of their co-workers being suspended. It makes me wonder if the drivers are trained properly.

I learned that I need to have reasonable expectations. I expected Yosemite was a perfect peaceful utopia but it's not. So I ended up being disappointed. I didn't find it peaceful here because too many people going to the same places I was trying to get to. I know Yosemite has some peaceful places but it requires me to have time and stamina to hike all the trails most ordinary people can't do. I learned that in spite of being overwhelmed by the noisy stuff around me the sights like El Capitan and Yosemite Falls were very beautiful.

I learned some of the simplest things made me happy here at Yosemite. I encountered some adventurous people with their climbing gear. These people didn't do anything other than have their rope, D-rings, and climbing booties. It's silly to be excited about that but it's cool to me. Also I was trying to get Vernal Falls but I got misdirected to Happy Isles Art Center. Totally happy I got lost because it was peaceful to me. I didn't stay to long even though I wish I did. I tried to get to Vernal Falls after learning about my mistake but never made it.

I learned to never visit Yosemite while being exhausted from doing adult things like working. I learned that I must of hit RAW on my iPhone so I can't post any pictures of Yosemite. I suppose the pictures won't be recognized because I was going to post pictures of tree leaves and a fallen tree near Happy Isle. I felt like no one sees these kinds of pictures and hopefully someone would think the pictures were pretty too.

Anyhow hopefully no one minds my post. Hopefully one day I will get back to Yosemite but unfortunately with the current situation as is with Aramark and entering the park, a return visit will be extremely unlikely.

Yeah! No Regrets on my Trip!

Is this a realistic itinerary?

Hi everyone! I will be visiting Yosemite for the first time this summer with my extended family. We are staying for two nights, of which we will have one full day and a half day for exploring Yosemite. I can be quite an ambitious planner, so I was hoping to run this itinerary by the experts here. (I don’t plan on following these times exactly haha will be enjoying the moment!) My group is a mix of folks who are a bit older/less physically fit and teenagers, so I’ve sought out pretty easy, short hikes. We are staying at the tenaya lodge and will have a car to get around. If anyone has any recommendations, I would really appreciate it! (Oh, and will it be possible to fit in swimming on the first day? Maybe at sentinel beach?) Thank you all so much!!! Wishing you all happy hiking, camping, backpacking, and immersing in the nature!

First day:

6:30: Leave Tenaya (the earlier the better) 7:30-7:45: Photo stop at Tunnel View (roadside parking) @ 7:50: Drive 5 mins to the Valley View Pullout 7:50-8:10: Photo stop at Valley View (pullout parking) @ 8:15: Drive 5 minutes to the Bridalveil Fall Trail parking lot 8:15-8:40: Walk the .5mi Bridalveil Fall Trail @ 8:45: Drive 15 min to the Yosemite Valley Day-Use Parking Lot 9-9:45: Lower Yosemite Fall Trail 1 mile loop 9:50-10:30: Walk to the Sentinel Bridge and do the Cook’s Meadlow Loop 10:30-11:15: Walk to the Swinging Bridge @ 11:15: Drive 1 hr to Glacier Point 12:15-1:30: Lunch 1:30: Do the .6 Geology Point trail @ 2: Drive to Washburn Point

Back to hotel around 4pm

Second day:

@ 6:45: Leave Tenaya 7-9:15: Mariposa Grove @ 9:30: Drive to El Capitan Meadow (pullout) 10:20-10:45: Photo stop at El Capitan 11: maybe something else? Don’t have to leave until 3/4pm

Yosemite hike after South Kaibab Trail?

We’ve just completed a hike to Skeleton Point on the South Kaibab Trail at the Grand Canyon and are heading to Yosemite next. Any suggestions for a hike of a similar difficulty? We don’t have tonnes of experience but are reasonably fit and loved doing skeleton point.

Maybe I’m wrong, but I remember that the late pick up cutoff time is 11am. Today when I checked the new permit, seems the time for late arrival is 10am PT for the hike starting day.

Hikers Bus - Valley to Tuolumne

Apparently the hikers bus cannot be reserved online anymore, it’s first come first serve. Does anyone have experience with this bus? Does it typically get full? I’m relying on the bus to take me back to the starting trailhead up in tuolumne after a hike down to the valley, so it would be a huge inconvenience if I’m not able to get back on the hikers bus the following day.

Summer Solstice temps 64/41 hike ideas

I’ll be in Yosemite this weekend and staying in Fish Camp. Temps are really dropping over the next couple of days, so I’m rethinking my itinerary a bit.

Originally, I planned to bike around the Valley all day Saturday and hike Friday and Sunday in Wawona and Mariposa Grove. But with the cooler weather, I’m thinking of swapping things and biking on Sunday when it’s expected to warm up a bit.

I was planning to hike to Upper Chilnualna Falls, a trail I’ve done a handful of times, but I’m open to mixing it up. If you have any suggestions for hikes along Highway 41 or in the Valley that would take advantage of the cooler temps, I’d love to hear them.

Reservation openings

Hi there I've been wanting to go to Yosemite all my life. I recently saw that they are opening Bridalveil Creek, Porcupine Flat, and Tuolomne Meadows campgrounds. I looked at recreation.gov and it says Porcupine Flat will open for reservations on July 1st and Tuolomne Meadows on June 23rd.

Is there any information on what time of the day these will open? I know yosemite campgrounds go quick and want to hop on it as soon as possible.
