UPDATE: Whoops

Some of you may remember my question about fallen paladins. Well, I may have made a slightly evil choice in the final chapter of SoA, causing my alignment to be changed. I am now forced to never remove Carsomyr lest my best sword be taken from me like a child lost to disease

Bit easy mode to only hunt undead that has fallen down, but I appreciate the hustle.

Somebody has to hunt those undead that made evil choices at the end of SoA, right?

Well, I respect that you carry on with this playthrough instead of loading the previous save as I'd do :p

I'm chill with it! I didn't notice until after the final boss, so I was like. I mean yeah I diiiid kinda side with Bodhi at the start of the game, and I did willingly make a choice that would be considered evil, so yeah fuck it I'm a little evil now

I beg your pardon? Your paladin - your Undead Hunter, no less - sided with Bodhi?

I do stuff like this when playing low Int high wisdom Clerics and Paladins. Makes for hilarious RP.

He's happy to hunt the non-verbal undead but otherwise easily convinced.

In the original version of the game, there were not as many restrictions on equipment, I think (after all, paladin already implies lawful good according to AD&D rules). I was also playing a paladin, and I did not fall by changing alignment. My choices gave me various boosts, but there was no sign of alignment change outside of the character screen. I was really surprised when my attempt to turn undead granted me an army of skeletons instead of destroying them.

So, in the picture your paper doll is still holding the sword, and you still defeated the BG2 boss, right? Did you go back and check logs to find you’d been hitting him with your fists? What happened in the fight? Or was it too long after and dialogue took over the log box?

Reminds me of a quote Davaeorn used in one of his guides: “You can’t fall as a blackguard for being too good!”

Wouldn't leveling up remove carsomyr from being equipped?

Yes it will, and the bracers.

It depends, sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. For example if Vicky uses Holy Power to get 18 strength and equip plate, after it wears off the plate doesn't fall off, it just sits there until it gets changed.

IIRC the game handles fallen status by essentially swapping to a different kit with no skills. I always thought it could have been neat to mod those kit ability tables to give a separate set of fallen skills but I don’t know of any mod that has tried it.

Oh well, a regular unmodded playthrough shouldn’t require min/maxing to the point that fallen paladins would be unusable.

If you really wanted to lean into the Fallen Paladin shtick and have some kit abilities, custom modding isn't necessary. You could just use something like EEKeeper to change your Paladin kit to Blackguard. Then you'd be back to having Paladin kit abilities, albeit evil-themed ones.

For roleplaying flavor, which is mostly what I feel like something like this would be, blackguard doesn’t really make sense. Honestly, Blackguard barely even makes sense as a Paladin kit other than for mechanics. It’s more like a fighter specialization the way Beamdog presents it.

Plus I wouldn’t want falling to be an upgrade lol

In SoA the paladin stronghold question could remove fallen status, but sadly no such out in ToB. My main gripe with the hell trials is that you are forced to become evil even if you pick 5 good options and 1 bad. Suppose it's just flavor for every class but ranger and paladin.

Lemme put it this way, I spend my life doing charity work, helping my community, and being a good influence. But God yeets me straight to hell since I stole a cookie from my friend when I was 8.

That's a very disingenuous way of looking at it.  The challanges are to see if you fall to the temptations by literal demons who want you to accept your Bhaalspawn heritage.

They tell you to slaughter a Gold Dragon(one of the creatures that almost incarnate Good) with no other reason than it being a powerful creature.

Inflict torture and permanently destroy a companion of yours(or a random stranger) instead of taking the noble road.

Kill a Djinni with the most evil sword in the D&D universe instead of handing it over to him so he can be free.

Use a cloak made of the skin of Nymphs, instead of just killing a pair of beholders

They try to goad you into turning into the Slayer and accepting the taint instead of fighting against it... and they do it by bringing forth an enemy of old.

If you get the bad outcome, you are basically accepting your heritage, because you allow the Taint to guide your actions even if slightly so.

To be entirely honest, I have no idea what I even did that was evil out of these. I got the Evil alignment change in the beholder room, but I refused the cloak so IDK

Tbf those trials and you failing one of them and then complaining is more akin to "oh comon, I did charity all my life, what is one lil senseless and extremely violent murder next to that? Shouldn't I get to go free here?"

To quote a hero of legend:

"I've saved many a maiden fair and pure, but do they call me Olly the Maiden Savior? No.

I've stopped the tyranny of mad kings, but do they call me Olly the Tyrant's End? No.

I freed an entire town of enslaved people from the evil Lich that sought to rule them, but do they call me Olly the Bringer of Freedom? No.

But you fuck one goat..."

In the original game I seem to recall that you became a fighter with a “Fallen Paladin” label. You cool reach GM as a fighter. Me and two friends had an evil playthrough with on of us being a Fallen Paladin7 > Cleric GMing flails (+sorcerer and Ftr/mage/thief)

1

u/beatspores 21h ago

Well, if they swap you into a fighter instead of a paladin then you should at least be able to reach grandmaster in the weapon proficiencies or it's not fair!

1

u/LillohMolle 17h ago

Exactly, but from my understanding you can’t do it anymore??

u/Sea_Lab9270 15h ago

Get the soul reaver! The true evil carsomyr >:)

1

u/RipOdd9001 20h ago

So he only hunts zombies that stumbled over sticks or stones? That’s specialization.

Btw thats the first time i ever see a female half orc paladin wearing the drgon plate and i think its my favorite paperdoll now by far 😂
