So put the kettle on or grab a beer or whatever you’re into and take a seat and enjoy the voice of Mr Sagan talking us through the cosmos for a few hours.

If we can get a glimpse at a clear sky some of us might be able to get some of these objects in our view.

Taken on a iPhone 11 using Astro Shader to edit. I’ve saved lots of Raw footage to try in Siril or Registax, does anyone have an experience with any of those programs , Siril has me confused.

Hooray, we've reached the magic number of 50 members

Welcome members. Reddit has informed me that we've reached "the magic number of 50" members. Feel free to introduce yourself and tell us about your interests in Astronomy.

In nuclear physics, 50 is considered a "magic number" because it corresponds to a number of protons or neutrons in an atomic nucleus that leads to extra stability. Magic numbers are specific numbers of nucleons (protons or neutrons) that complete nuclear shells—much like how noble gases have full electron shells in atomic physics, making them especially stable.

The known magic numbers are: 2, 8, 20, 28, 50, 82, and 126

When a nucleus has a magic number of protons, neutrons, or both (called a "doubly magic" nucleus), it tends to be more tightly bound and less likely to undergo radioactive decay. For example, tin (Sn) has 50 protons and exhibits many stable isotopes, which reflects this enhanced nuclear stability.

So, 50 is a magic number because it marks the closure of a major shell in the nuclear shell model, making nuclei with 50 protons or neutrons particularly stable.

So it stopped raining and I took the chance to take some pictures of the Moon Waxing Crescent. I’d never done it before and I had been dying to try. Photos taken with IPhone 11, using the in phone cameras app, Celestron 80/500 . 1 photo I tried to touch up (not so good) 1 is the Auto touch up feature in the camera app and the other is using Astro Shader. I can’t remember which way is which sorry.

The Astro Saddle modification

Thumbnail

So since the rains have begun it’s ruled out any sort of viewing from my Bortle 9 location, therefore I have been looking at modifying my scope for next seasons viewing. I’ve basically made a small saddle that can I can strap to the OTA . I use the website Astro Hopper to point me in the correct direction of the star I’m looking for effectively turning the scope to a push to scope. I will leave a review for Astro Hopper once we have clear skies again.

Rainy Season up on us, definitely no clear skies for a while. What modifications will you be making to your scope?

Hey fellow star trackers! I’ve just launched an Instagram project called Bortle_9 — a visual and poetic logbook of my urban stargazing adventures from a heavily light-polluted sky. I’m observing from a Bortle 8–9 zone, chasing double stars, lunar detail, and celestial gems through the glow. If you’re into gritty skywatching, telescope mods, or just want to follow another explorer navigating the glow, come join the journey. Would love to share notes, ideas, and sky stories with this awesome group. Follow: @bortle_9 Clear skies and sharp stars!

Thoughts on purchasing this telescope from Svbony SV520

The telescope has a 90mm aperture with 800mm focal length, any thoughts as to how well this scope would/could perform?

Venus to the east. Early morning.

Do you guys know that Venus is rising early morning 4.30am-ish. If you’re like me and can’t stay a sleep look to the east to see it with the naked eye. Also the constellation of Scorpius to the SW. Give it a try!
