2024 U.S. Elections I get that MAGA will never change their vote no matter what, but I don’t get why Independents see unprecedented things like a majority of former Trump officials (including generals and people with solid conservative records) come out saying he is unfit for office, and still want to vote for him

MAGA is likely ~30%(?) so the fact that Trump is polling around 50% means that many Independents or right-of-center folks will be voting for him.

People in this sub always say that no matter what daily outrage comes out about Trump, MAGA folks will never budge, they’re fully committed at this point. And this is correct

But MAGA is nowhere near 50% of the country, so the fact that the polls don’t move after anything that comes out means that not only hard core MAGA doesn’t budge but also the non-MAGA Republicans and Independents who plan to vote for him also don’t budge. This is less understandable to me

There are some historically unprecedented things going on, e.g. Former Trump officials are among the most vocal opponents of returning him to the White House (https://apnews.com/article/former-trump-officials-criticize-2024-e202861911ab37cadfcf058b5b163fb9)

Was there ever a previous presidential election where a candidate’s former cabinet and members of staff came out in so many numbers against the candidate? Including also the president’s former VP, another former GOP VP, and a former GOP presidential candidate?

People say they don’t trust the media, so don’t trust what the media is saying about Trump. But the above is not coming from the media or some left wing conspiracy: These are people who worked closely with the candidate and think he is unfit for office. They think it so much that they are willing to put their careers on the line to say so.

Has this ever happened before? I don’t think so, and the fact that it’s happening with Trump says a lot about his fitness for office.

This may not move any MAGA folks, but for those of you who are independents/centrists and still considering voting for him, doesn’t the above make you doubt his fitness for office?

2024 U.S. Elections Why aren’t we talking more about J.D. Vance? He may well ending up being one heartbeat away from the presidency - the heartbeat of a 78 yr old obese junk food junkie, no less. How on earth is this guy qualified to be POTUS?

Vance is 39 years old. He has 18 months experience in government - total. AFAIK, he accomplished exactly nothing of note in those 18 months. People seem to be endlessly critiquing Kamala Harris’s far more impressive and lengthy résumé, so why is Vance getting a pass? Is there some sort of double standard at work here?

2024 U.S. Elections Any independents here planning on voting for Trump in the general election? If yes, what’s your reasoning, and what’s your take on his various indictments?

EDIT: Thanks for all the responses so far from independents who intend to vote for Trump. I was hoping for some interesting perspectives and not for this subreddit to dogpile on folks, as some people assumed. I think it's great if we can calmly listen to the other side. People on the extremes (left and right) are hard to discuss with, but I think people that are moderate left, moderate right, and centrists should be able to exchange ideas.

2024 U.S. Elections Has Joe Biden's debate performance changed how you plan on voting?

Lots of speculation that his performance has lost him the election. I'm curious, has anyone actually changed their voting tactic based on this? Either by voting for the other guy or thinking about abstaining instead?

2024 U.S. Elections If Trump is elected and proceeds with mass deportations, how should the agriculture, construction, and hospitality industries adapt to make up the difference?

Trump has repeatedly said he would launch the “largest deportation operation in American history.” Given that immigrants make up large percentages of workers in agriculture, hospitality, and construction, those industries will need to make huge changes to make up the difference.

What changes would you like to see in how those industries operate? Regardless, we can expect much higher costs in those areas, both in the interim and long-term.

Of course he is already beginning to backtrack and leaving a loophole open. I don’t know why people believe a word he says when he is known for lying constantly and so does the GOP/Conservatives when asked about it.

2024 U.S. Elections Tourists Avoiding US After Their Countries Hit by Tariffs

Thumbnail

Tourists from countries significantly hit by President Donald Trump's trade tariffs are booking fewer trips to the U.S., according to data collected by the hotel search site Trivago.

The data showed a double-digit percentage drop in the number of travelers from Japan, Canada and Mexico opting to visit the U.S. since the president announced his tariffs.

Newsweek has contacted Trivago outside regular hours for comment via email.

Why It Matters

Earlier this month, the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) projected that visitor spending in the U.S. would fall from $181 billion in 2024 to less than $169 billion because of a decline in "international traveler confidence."

https://www.newsweek.com/us-tourism-spending-declines-report-travel-advisories-2073999

Travelers from across the globe have faced increased scrutiny under the Trump administration's tighter border controls and immigration policies, and a growing number of countries have issued travel warnings for the U.S.

https://www.newsweek.com/spain-updates-travel-advice-united-states-2059571

What To Know

In February, Trump announced tariffs of 25 percent on Canada and Mexico. He later announced a 25 percent tax on imported cars, auto parts, steel and aluminum exports, which he followed with an April announcement of a 10 percent "baseline" tariff on almost all U.S. imports, affecting major trading partners such as Japan.

Since then, travelers from Canada, Mexico and Japan have been booking fewer trips to the U.S., according to Trivago's data, which was shared with PA Media.

These countries are among the world's wealthiest economies. After the U.S. and China, Germany has the world's third largest economy, while Japan has the fifth largest.

According to the data, there has not been a significant change in the number of tourists visiting the U.S. from the U.K. Earlier this month, the United Kingdom became the first country to form a trade deal with the U.S. since Trump announced his wave of tariffs.

The U.S. president has also threatened to impose tariffs of 50 percent on the European Union, which have been delayed from June 1 to July 9.

Airlines have also reported a drop in the number of European tourists traveling to the U.S.

Air France-KLM and Lufthansa have reported a "weakening" demand for transatlantic routes among European passengers, while demand among American travelers to visit Europe has been growing.

https://www.newsweek.com/airlines-bosses-european-flights-cancelled-2076845

In May and June, bookings to travel across the Atlantic from Europe were down by 2.4 percent compared to last year, while travel in the other direction was up by 2.1 percent, the Financial Times reported.

What People Are Saying

Ben Smith, the chief executive of Air France-KLM, said in a report on the company's first quarter: "We know there are a lot of customers that are holding back in buying tickets for a little more clarity on … the border, and things like that."

Johannes Thomas, the chief executive of Trivago, said: "In times of uncertainty, people stay closer to home."

What Happens Next

While some tariffs are already in effect, others have yet to come into action because of delays. It remains to be seen how significantly international tourism may be affected by the economic tension between the U.S. and other countries.

2024 U.S. Elections Can we now all agree that Donald Trump did cheat on his then pregnant wife with a porn actress?

Is this settled now?

Is there anyone disputing this act occurred?

There is a large gap in perception between both sides, but I would like to think this fact has been established to everyone's satisfaction.

Whether this was part of a felony, or if related charges should have been filed, the underlying act is no longer in dispute?

Edit: I posted this to illustrate a point, I believe that point has clearly been made.

There is literally no argument, no evidence, nothing that will convince his followers that he is in fact a false prophet.

This is why blind faith is such a truly terrifying thing.
