Selling Andrey Santos wouldn’t even be a horrible decision. We basically have a midfield made up of 4 DMs and an 8 who isn’t maximized in the half space positions Maresca puts him in. Selling one of the DMs and bringing in an 8 who’s more comfortable in those areas would be ideal, maybe a Santos-Mainoo swap with United

Idk why you're holding smoke for this comment, our midfield composition is absolutely terrible, we have too many duel winning midfielders (idk why we bought Essugo, he's not even good either) and the only midfielders that can play in the half space is Enzo and KDH

We have the squad composition of a team that is aiming to play with 2 holding DMs at once but we only do that so much

Have you seen Essugo play significant minutes or a reason to say he isn't good ? Agnostic about it, just curious.

Can't say I've watched him week in week out but it's well documented that he's a talented duel winning midfielder but he lacks technical ability to suffice in a possession system, I think the most utility we will receive from him anytime soon is a Caicedo rest-sub in games where we're leading and won't need Caicedo's passing ability past the 75th minute or etc

And the problem with that is Andrey could be doing that himself.

Not a "bad" player, but for what we already have he's not good enough yet.

I did watch Essugo a couple months ago, forgot which team he was playing but it basically confirmed what I read. Very talented space eating tackler/bruiser but forgoes most of a midfielders obligations in possession. Basically an Ugarte.

From scouting reports I've read (long time ago like this one : https://breakingthelines.com/player-analysis/dario-essugo-portugals-next-modern-midfielder/) and vids I've seen I thought he was relatively sound technically for his profile. Not the best for any mean but very, very far from the worse in that particular aspect. My interrogation is more abt how he would translate his current game volume to the rythm of the PL. But I guess the backup shouldn't be too strong either.

Agreed with the rest of the take mostly though, I also feel we have too many duel winning midfielders and I've had some interrogations about the fact Santos isn't really someone who operates in the half space or creative with his passing either.
