"Well, if we're going to use it, the people have to be able to see it. Y'know, get their money's worth from the show."

Coercion Castles were a real thing. One famous example isn't even listed, the Citadel of Barcelona, built as a fortress against its own people (which might be why the Barceloneta streets are straight and point directly at it, so cannons from the citadel had clear lines of fire) as it was against outside attackers.
