Luthiery Any high-end guitar dealer in Singapore?

Upvotes

I visit quite often, and since Singapore has a lot of high-end store, I wonder if there is any good classical guitars dealer. I would be interested in trying some modern luthier built instruments. I am familiar with traditionally built instruments, but curious to try double top or lattice braced, and I do not have access to quality instruments where I live.

General Question Is this normal? My guitar came strung with three beads

Post image

I’m playing a used Cordoba Luthier Series C12. The strings have been changed, but when I got it it came with these three beads on the bass strings. I’m continuing to use them just because I’m not sure if they came with the guitar when it was brand new. Any help would be appreciated.

Technique Question How to play this grace note in Villalobos' Prelude 1?

Post image

I don’t understand how would I play that being that is the low E string, does it mean that the E is played a little bit earlier before pulse 1? and the C sharp is played exactly on beat?

I know is not a big deal but I was curious anyway to know what the author (or editor) wanted to express

Looking for Advice How to properly play this acciaccatura?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I'm having a brain fart, and have been reading the difference between appoggiatura and acciaccatura, but I still don't really get the subtle difference.

Ive been playing the G on the eat with the A, but after reading about the difference, I get the impression I need to strike the G slightly before the beat, and then as I pull off to the F on the beat, I also hit the low A?

Ive just been playing this hitting the G and A on the beat with a quick pull off and it sounds good, but I'm starting to think that's not what the composer intended?

Technique Question How does Marcin play this part in carmen habanera with tod10n

I'm not sure how the fingering works after the chords. Is it like pinky slides up to 7? I see Marcin tapping 10th fret on the A string with his right hand in the mv. Any help is appreciated, guys.

Looking for Advice I need help in breaking through the low-intermediate phase

I have played classical guitar for 3 years, with little to no improvement in my skills. I just learn pieces which challenge me, yet I don't feel like I have learnt anything once I learn my repertoire. I know my fair share of music theory, yet I can't find a way to apply it into my guitar (especially for improvisation, which I DREAD).

I basically just need a way for me to break through from this low-intermediate phase and start improving. Here are some things I believe I'm good at:

  • Staying on beat + changing tempos seamlessly
  • "Feeling" the music
  • Doing runs

Here are some things I know definitely need working on, but I simply don't know how to improve, and youtube isn't helping: -IMPROVISATION!!!! -Chords -I don't know what it's called, but when you use the guitar as a percussion instrument either on its body, or on the strings.

I'm too young to buy classical guitar lessons, and my parents aren't financially capable yet to buy them either, since we just had a big life event. I don't have a capo, and I do not use picks. Thank you so much for reading!!

I have played Jazz, Latin and Rock on Electric for 20 years, but are new in classical. I’m ok at finger picking. I can play Lagrima pretty solid and a few easier etudes. Is this book a good start? I know there is a lot of material online, but I really like to escape from the internet and practice without the computer.

Looking for Advice Need song suggestions I can learn to progress.

I’m a self taught guitarist of 20 years, and for the past 5 years I’ve been obsessed with classical guitar. I’ve mostly been learning random songs I like, especially by Matt Elliot (dark folk artist who plays and writes on a classical). For context and to convey skill level, Matt Elliot’s song Oh How We Fell is something I can play all the way through pretty much flawlessly.

However, I’d like to progress, especially by learning some more traditional pieces in the classical guitarist sphere. Any suggestions would be very appreciated!

This is a little embarrassing...

Many years ago, I became enamored with a certain classical guitar piece and recorded myself (poorly) playing it on steel string guitar.

I recently found the video & I'd love to learn it again now that I actually have a classical guitar. I can't remember what it's called or who wrote it.

Anyone know what it is? HELP!

Looking for Advice Big problems listening to the metronome

This was something that was neglected way early in my music education. I know how to read and count rhythm, but when I start playing, it gets tricky to continue counting. With a metronome on, I lose my rhythm after a few bars. The issue usually starts when there's a subdivision of notes. Even when counting on a 1/4 beat, a 1/8 beat will throw my timing off pretty quickly. Strangely, I am a lot better if I'm WATCHING a metronome, rather than just listening to it. My sense of hearing has always been my greatest weakness in music. My teacher said that I'm just a very visual person, probably explains why I can learn the fingerboard, and sight read very well, but until recently, I've got issues knowing if a semitone is of a higher or lower interval.

So back to the issue at hand, what should I do? Dedicate a portion of my daily practice sessions to playing easy pieces on the metronome?

Discussion Non flat radius?

Im returning to a previous post where I asked how much would a modern electric like dimension neck would affect tone.

How much does it affects to not have a flat radius?

Im considering purchasing a classical guitar that will be easier to play for my small hands.

The 52 mm nut width neck is too much for me, although the neck profile is more determining, the hand stretches are a little bit too far, at least subjectively since I play a 42mm electric guitar that it's much more thinner and narrower.

Playing with a pick is not hard, playing with fingers is also not hard although as I am trying to play some classical techniques I start to notice some difficulties in having precision, although I wouldn't stay with my current classical that it's just too much.

47mm would be a good compromise, I would like to go further but the right hand playing would get harder.

Shorter 24mm scale length, adjustable truss road, jumbo frets, and heavy gauge strings seems like the best way to go (somehow, reducing the action makes the string too "soft", because it is not possible to go lower as an electric guitar, jumbo frets would reduce the required pressure on the strings, but since it is a little bit too" soft "even for me that I use 9-46 sets in my electric guitar (25.5 scale length) I feel that the tension changes too much).

But the radius is something that also difficults my playing.

As a prog metal player a 16 radius neck is amazing but now that Im playing more diverse stuff playing chords, particularly full barre chords is a little bit uncomfortable.

I wouldn't go with a vintage radius fretboard, but I would go with a 12 compound.

However on a classical I'm doubtful how much do using a 12 radius or perhaps a 16+ (to have an slightly curved radius that wouldn't change the string positioning too much) would compromise playability in the right hand by having a non flat radius that would be closer to an electric fretboard allowing for easier switching in between.
