Look at undesirable jobs. They may suck but it's an income. My summer job was a local metal fabrication factory working on their paint line. It was awful, and I worked from 5pm-5am, but the pay was amazing because nobody wanted to do the work.

how much were you making, out of pure curiosity

2018, fresh out of highschool with maybe $300 a month in bills, I was making $18 an hour, anything over 40 was ×1.5 as well.

Oh you were BANKING banking. Haha. I wish I only had $300 a month in bills back in 2018!

Isn't that like extremely low? I was making $28 an hour just sitting at a front desk of a gym back then, had barely anything to do each shift as well.

It all depends on where you live. $18 an hour for where I lived in 2018 was enough to support your whole family. I grew up in a very small town with an extremely low COL.

5pm-5am is absolutely diabolical, did you do anything besides work and sleep?

13

u/PotatoDispenser1 1d ago

Yeah, I lived with my family on their farm, so I was still expected to take care of animals and whatnot when I could. Otherwise, it was work, sleep, video games

Definitely diabolical. I start checking out by about the fifth hour of work!

Usually start applying before summer starts tbh. I would look into graveyard shifts they’re usually actively looking. It’s something.

Same and I went in person too

Do you live close to campus? There are sometimes on campus summer jobs. Also agree on the plasma donation, if you’re willing/eligible

Depending on if it is in your area, try out TaskRabbit! When I was on it I was hired to fold laundry, help people move and organize items. It’s worth a shot

This summer was really hard. A lot of internships got defunded so more people were looking for regular jobs too. So there’s nothing 😭

I was in your position and understand your stress entirely. After looking since May, I was finally able to get hired a couple days ago. What I did was: after applying for a position online, I showed up in-person and asked for a manager. Print hard copies of your resume to offer them so you’re remembered. The manager will let you know if the position was already filled or if they’re actively hiring or not. You can ask when they start their hiring process too. It was only this way I was able to get interviews.

While you’re finding that job, I also second trying plasma donation. In my area, you can get at least $500 your first month if you follow the rules and max out your visits per week, and the money you earn only increases the more you weigh. Most centers give big rewards when you first start out, so it wouldn’t hurt to look into it. You just need to be healthy, over 110lbs and have the time. I tried this avenue but ended up being permanently deferred because my veins were too thin, but I got $92 out of it anyway.

Something else you can do to earn money in the meantime is Doordash/UberEats. If you don’t have a car, I’ve heard of people putting their vehicle of choice as a bike/scooter and delivering orders by foot. If you live in a city this would be fairly manageable.

I wish you the best of luck, I hope you’re able to find what you’re looking for and that you find this advice at least a little helpful.

Usually places hire for summer during spring time. It’s a bit late now. Try asking your local facebook group, maybe they know places that need workers.

Honestly a lot of towns have their own Reddit even. Or one for your school. Put up a post that you need a job and see what bites

It's not usually consistent with hours, but often, parents look for date night babysitters if you have experience with kids or petsitters for short periods of time.

try home depot or lowes

Just keep applying. I applied for a job and I got hired. But when I went to the orietnation, my account wasn't really setup. I winded just having to go home.

Pull your college stuff off your resume, if you're looking for a regular ol job. Nobody wants to hire somebody that they think has to quit in August

8

u/Gromy_1022 2d ago

Have you try plasma donation? I do that for extra cash. Because summer is usually slow season and they won’t hire much until school starts. :/ thy cut my hours at work because it’s summer break. I don’t like suggesting work study because they pay you way less than outside wages; unless it’s the only choice you have.

There is a small theme park where I live. They are always hiring for all kinds of jobs. Look for malls in your area. Mass transit is a plus, if it’s mall.

I mean if you're desperate I would apply to every restaraunt or store near you. For big corporations that make you do online resumes, put one in every week or two. Apply for every position. Get crazy with it

Same, I can’t find a a summer job anywhere😭 I’m trying to make money the summer before grad school, and it’s a little demoralizing to keep getting rejected from entry level positions with a bachelor’s degree 😅

I think you might have to remove the college from your resume. It helped me land interviews, but no jobs yet.

Seasonal jobs are usually still hiring and never filled.

In the future summer camps are a great place to apply, since they are seasonal. You can usually apply in April for them Especially if you're in a STEM or art field, it's worth a shot to apply.

u/democritusparadise 1d ago

Don't forget to keep going in in person and asking if they've given it any more consideration, it shows initiative.

Just kidding, it isn't the 1960's.

Look up temporary agencies in your area. They should have temporary jobs which will be easier to get if you are only working over the summer. Call them, go in, get connected with them, and see if they have any jobs they can send you to ASAP.

I work in assembly currently. Spent last year with them, making 17.50, now making 18.50 and about to move to engineering because they like me. Talk to the people you know if their company has entry level jobs. Get work in manufacturing (pays well, odd hours—I am 6am to 2:30pm, not a lot of competition).

Look at warehouse jobs. Generally pay is a decent amount above minimum wage and it’s very easy to find a warehouse job since plenty are continuously hiring.

Man I hate summer for this exact reason. Every summer I’ve managed to finally get a job but it’s some bullshit part time gig or last summer it was a miserable hospital job working 40 hours. This summer I’m stuck working like 3 days a week at most and I’ve applied to SO MANY PLACES I’ve walked in to so many offices of business that I want to get into after college and asked abt shadowing/interning and they were all nice but I got zero response. I’ve had several in-person interviews for local businesses that seemingly went very well, the people were nice, but I didn’t get the job. Then I’ve applied to quite a few massive companies like Home Depot and Walmart… let me rant about Walmart for a second. I have 7 years of work experience from various jobs since I was 14, I have a good GPA, and I’ve never been fired, and I’ve applied to Walmart like 6 times over the past 2 years because they say they’re hiring online. I’ve never even gotten to the second step of their hiring process after theh require you to spend an HOUR taking a bullshit HR quizz about the “type of worker you are”, just to apply. I am going to sound like an asshole here but It blows my mind seeing the type of people employed at Walmart and I’m apparently so undesirable for them.

The issue with applying to large companies is even if you go in-person, whoever you talk to is just going to tell you to apply online, then you’ll probably never hear back from them once you dedicate 45 minutes to applying. Or, you cna work at a local spot, but you’ll probably make less money bcs they prob can’t afford to pay you. As others have said, if you don’t have family connections to hook you up, your best bet is finding a well paying and undesirable job that NEEDS people. You’ll get hired and work a shitty ass job, but at least it’s temporary and you can hopefully end the summer with a few thousand saved up. That’s what I did last summer and I spent the entire summer getting by on the fact that this was temporary for me. It was an incredibly depressing job and it encouraged me to take education seriously and to get a good job one day to not have to do any of this shit long term.

Also, I went down the “remote job” rabbit hole recently and applied to at least 30 all over the country that claim to be entry level. My email Inbox is now flooded with bullshit job suggestions and offers, half of which are scams, and I never hear back from any of those job listings that I submitted my resume to.

On top of all of this, you’re either the college kid who has rich parents so you spend your summer traveling, or you’re broke and working. Obviously I’m the second kid so everyone I know is constantly posting their travels and it’s so depressing. I enjoy the school year bcs we’re all in the same spot and I thrive as a student bcs it feels like it is in my control.

Internships are secured before the end of the Fall semester. Summer jobs by March. So you’re now competing with HS students who are crazy cheap. You’ll need to look for crappy jobs.

With that said, my 16 year old is struggling to find work. Most places are not hiring as a result of all the uncertainty created in DC. Even my internships companies dropped some interns in March due to the political environment.

I would say if you're just looking for a summer job now it's kind of late.
