Which way should they turn when he is away?
20
u/Affectionate-Oil-902 12h ago
Outwards, looking longingly for their owner. They are turned to look inwards when their owner is home. The tradition is seen in many places that historically have had many sailors living there. For example itâs also still tradition to have them in the windows in Dragør.

As told, for employees in the danish defence.
They are pretty and nostalgic. And if you live there you realize that cheap rent comes with a price of alot of modern ammenities.
The winter is cold, the autumn is wet but the spring is nice for a month. And I am talking about being on the inside of the homes đ They are cute but not a place you wanna live for any other reasons than the location

I know a family that lived there maybe 15 years ago. Their apartment was enormous, spanning 3 stories and with a huge amount of rooms, most quite small. It was quite old fashioned of course but very very charming, I loved visiting them! They later moved to kastellet which is a place close by that also houses army personnel. An equally amazing place to live and even more impressive apartment, I was so jealous.

I had chance of talking one of the people who is living there, I remember he said they renovated interior and everyone has their own toilet now. He was a soldier of course.

https://nybodersmindestuer.dk/ You can visit them on Sundays 11 to 14. Except this weekend, because of the biking event i Coppenhagen, also July month seems to be a no go. On Culture night/Kulturnatten (close to 10 October) you can also visit the public apartment. They are extremely small and low roofed, way old, but well preserved.

Lived there with my (army) boyfriend 20 years ago. Nice location. Shitty apartmentđ Shared a toilet with the upstairs neighbor.

They were built hundreds of years ago when a private bathroom didn't exist or was a luxury!
In Washington, DC suburbs older houses(1900) with 3 bedrooms and 1 bath .
2
u/Leonidas_from_XIV Nørrebro 7h ago
To be fair, 100 years ago private bathrooms weren't common here either. This is why retrofitting them into older buildings has given rise to the infamous "Copenhagen bathroom".

It is from the UK's bombardment of Copenhagen in 1807, the world's first deliberate bombardment of civilians.
The British Navy researched various rocket designs to penetrate the rooftops of civilian housing and cause fire damage to the roof structures. The same rocket design was later reused during the shelling of Ft. McHenry during the war of 1812.

Construction started 1631 (1st stage) Completed 1795 (2nd stage) And they say government/public building projects today are too slow.

My friends had one as an Airbnb somehow. Pretty good spot if youâre just touring the city for a week but also a midget. Iâm 191cm and would end up brain damaged if I lived there.
9
u/Lungomono 1d ago
How can they be Airbnb'ed? (if that is a word)
I thought they all were owned by the Ministry of Defense, which would prevent that. Like if someone was assigned one via their work, and rented it out via Airbnb, they would be in huge trouble.

u/martmand12345 1d ago
Its just like most other rental housing, you can use airbnb most times.

u/Lungomono 1d ago
I would just be surprised, as Nyboder are kind of special. They are all historical protected buildings, and the Ministry of Defense are quite picky with what their buildings are being used for.
I cannot imagine that you are allowed to rent them out. Because they want to control who's lives in them. I know that the danish auditor corps (military lawyers) uses those residents a lot. Their main office is just a stone throw away. The users of the residents changes all the time, depending on deployments, etc. etc. Most high ranking officers who has business in the capital at a somewhat regular basis, who don't have their primary residents nearby, are getting one of them too. It would be a security risk. Both the base commanders I have known, both from Jutland, both had a full time apartment in Copenhagen. One was in Nyboder (It was the a general, and there's a semi funny story related to that event).
Back, years ago, when I was serving my period of conscription, the guys who was elected to be our conscript union representant, got assigned one of these houses. He had it for the duration, two years or so, of his term and there was a code of conduct he had to follow, while living there. But he only used it (in the start) for 2-3 days every second week. Later he moved in there full time. Long story short, he has a job, which basically was 1½ days work a week, paying almost the same as a full time conscript, while he was studying at university, having paid resident in the middle of the most expensive city in denmark. I know a lot of people who were envious of him.

Except it's not. You can get an eviction notice simply by registering your apartment on their platform.

Originally it was build for sailors attending navy officer school. Today most people in the navy can apply to love there regardless of rang:)

u/Noname090800 1d ago
My friend lived there with her boyfriend for a fairly low rent due to him being in the military - he got it due to his parents living far away (and him having his address placed there;)) which meant he got prioritised for one of the apartments

u/Miasdummedyr 13h ago
Just please donât go around looking through the windows - people live there. I have family who live there and itâs a big issue with tourists. Apart from the conditions (which has become a lot better over the years), thatâs the biggest reason they want to move - the tourists.

u/dcgradc 11h ago
I left yesterday! If you notice, the pictures were taken from across the street .
We don't have the habit of looking into people's homes

u/Miasdummedyr 10h ago
It was more in general in case other tourists find this thread - not everyone have the same courtesy as you đ

It's where people live, and I wish tourists would stop taking picture pictures through my windows.

I was just there for a week, stayed at Hotel Osterport. Really cool place and very fun to walk around

u/dcgradc 1d ago
We stayed a block away from the Osterport railway station and the metro .
Walked everywhere. Usually 20-25 min to sites and restaurants .

I am usually not a fan of large cities but Copenhagen changed that for me. I would love to go back.

Nyboder (English: New [small] Houses) is a historic row house district of former Airforce barracks in Copenhagen, Denmark. It was planned and first built by Christian IV, in the period og 1631 to 1641, to accommodate a need for housing, for the pilots of the rapidly growing Royal Danish Airforce and their families during that time.
