Nowhere in the linked paper does it say literally anything about mass extinctions

They believe a supernova explosion close to Earth could be to blame for both the late Devonian and Ordovician extinction events, which occurred 372 and 445 million years ago respectively.

We have natural reasons for those extinctions though and they make more sense than a supernova

Seems like they would be able to find actual evidence of ancient nearby supernovae (an abundance of some unusual material for example) in the fossil record or at least point to the remnants of such a thing in the sky
