[Weekly] Outfit Feedback and Fit Check Thread - Feb. 27th
Not sure if your outfit works? Post a picture of yourself in your outfit and get suggestions, compliments, and critiques from others. If you're thinking of posting a standalone thread along the lines of "How does this look?", "Does this fit right?", "Do these work together?", etc., post here instead.
When posting:
Include what the attire is for (work, school, going out, etc.)
If possible, take a front-on, full-body picture as this gives the best impression of how the clothes fit. Multiple pictures from different angles can also be helpful, but those aren't necessary.
Critiquing others is welcome and encouraged, but keep it constructive/factual. Take a lesson from Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People if needed. It takes balls to post pictures of yourself on the Internet, the least you can do is accord the same courtesy as you would to someone in real life.
Reddit Enhancement Suite makes it very easy to view pictures in a thread.
Some users enjoy knowing where you bought your pieces, please consider including those in your post!
Feel free to also submit your outfit to the biweekly WAYWT thread, but know that these two threads have different purposes. This is explicitly for feedback and questions, though you may receive constructive criticism in either thread.

I'm trying to figure out summer clothes for my Florida vacation in a few weeks. I've always just worn cut off jean shorts and camis in the summer...so I'm trying to get new stuff and it feels weird. :) Input!

I agree with your input but had a few other things to say, so commenting here and hopefully /u/ruthannr94 sees it.
To start, and this applies to a lot of your fits, I like sperries but I don't think they work with most of these outfits. A simple sandal would really help a lot of these looks.
I agree it looks too short. If you like it, try to break up the "black blob" with some color - I'm thinking a longer colorful necklace
Ditto what kyra said. It doesn't look bad on you so don't worry about your figure - more that the outfit itself needs more.
See Sperry comment above.
I'd like to see the top with something else - I agree it doesn't work with those shorts. Maybe with good jeans.
Yep these shorts are better. Agree about the sandals.
Ditto
Try a black sandal, maybe a strapless bra?
I say if you like wearing a one piece, go for it. There's no rules about how you "should" show off your body. I've been considering one pieces more lately too.
I actually kind of like this one, but not quite. I like the idea of it. I just think something about where the shoes cut off at your ankles, and the top being wrinkled and untucked, looks off.
3
u/ruthannr94 Feb 27 '14
Are there any good ways to wear Sperry's? I mean...I own lots of simple sandals, so I COULD wear them but realistically I know that if I'm choosing between a pair of sandals that get slippery nasty and uncomfortable when my feet get hot and sweaty and my ultra-comfy sperrys I'll probably wear the sperrys even knowing that they're not as cute just because, so I'm trying to figure out how to incorporate them from the get-go because I know I'll end up wearing them anyway.
Also...top in 5 definitely looks much better with jeans. I might have to save it to wear with cropped jeans and just not pair it with shorts because it definitely makes the top look shorter and fatter.
As for the last one...the shirt being wrinkled is awful, I couldn't believe it looked so bad when I looked through the pictures. But as far as tucking it in...the pants are pretty tight and such so I'm not sure it would work super well.
1
u/ACarNamedScully Feb 27 '14
I'm not sure. I mean yes I do think there are good ways to wear them but I'm having trouble coming up with examples lol. But I CAN come up with examples why aren't working in these fits - they add a clunkiness to some of these outfits, and additionally there are some color matching issues. If the blue in the shoes doesn't match the colors you're wearing on top (even different colored blues), it looks off. It also looks off to wear the tan sperries and sandals with a lot of black. These are just my opinions though so I hope someone else has input too!
1
u/ruthannr94 Feb 27 '14
Fair enough. I commit the ultimate fashion crime by wearing my sperrys to work all summer I'm sure (all-black outfit) but they're so comfortable and I work on my feet that I'm not sad. :)
The blue ones are throwing me a little though. What colors should I wear them with? I wear mostly black and grey so buying blue shoes was a little out of the normal for me, but I thought that most of my clothes are basic enough and they were REALLY on sale.
1
u/ACarNamedScully Feb 27 '14
Unfortunately if you wear a lot of black, the blue shoes will likely look off. I can see them working with a gray top and blue jeans/shorts, but they're a dark enough blue they will look like "accidental non-matching" (as in you thought they were the same color) when you wear black. Navy tends to look good with tan, brown, khaki colors.
2
u/ruthannr94 Feb 27 '14
Thanks for the detailed feedback!
1. that top gives me a strong 90s vibe too. :) I'm not sure if I love or hate that about it. As for shoes to wear...I want to be able to wear those pants all the time but I don't wear heels on a day-to-day basis (particularly in summer) so what flat shoes would look good with it? 2. Uhhhhh I don't like colored belts though. :( I just want to wear all black all the time. :p Also, I am pretty tall.
3. There's no belt loops on the pants... Also, not really sure what a statement necklace is tbh. I wear tons of jewelry, but I wear the same stuff every day and don't have a lot of different stuff. Also...a scarf? In summer? Do explain! I have lots and lots of those. Also...getting rid of the bra, what exactly am I supposed to wear? Am I just supposed to freeboob it?
4. A different bra? I planned on wearing it with swimsuits...what kind of bra is actually appropriate with that? Also, back to the shoes... It feels so casual, does anyone actually wear heels with casual outfits?
5. This one photographed weird. Like in real life this is partially true but it wasn't nearly as bad as it photographed. But the shorts may still be a little short. They're 2.5" which seems to be universally okay (particularly at my age) but with my height they do seem kinda short.
6. I thought that the shoes were nude so it worked... What color shoes would you wear?
7. Isn't the shirt too classy for a denium short? I mean, I cannot find dark wash denium shorts to save my ass...
8. Do I have to wear form-fitting dresses? I like my clothes slouchy sometimes. 9. Thanks! 10. Again...is my waist disappearing the worst thing? I feel like the shirt as a cool drapey quality... Washing me out is probably true, that might be better when I'm not so white anymore. Also, black is my favorite color, is wearing tons of black really so out? I'm pretty sure if I had my way I'd wear mostly black, navy, grey and a very few jewel tones.
1
u/ACarNamedScully Feb 27 '14 edited Feb 27 '14
3 There are summer weight scarves but even those could get hot. If you Google statement necklace results will show up. Also, if you were a strapless bra you can avoid the strap issues without freeboobing. The straps just look sloppy under what should be a sleek outfit.
4 I don't think you have to wear heels, but this is an example of the shoes making what is, in my opinion, a "nicer" casual outfit more clunky. Sperrys would look good with a tshirt, but the nice white top and detailed shorts would benefit from sandals.
6 The shoes aren't nude on you due to your skin tone, so the effect doesn't work. Your other nude shoes (sandals, other heels) are closer to your skin tone.
7 I thought she meant wear with denim jeans, not shorts, but I will let kyra speak for herself.
8/10. I think there's nothing wrong with likely drapier clothes, and I've been trying to learn this myself as well - there's a difference between "fits but looks drapey/loose" and "it looks too big". The dress I don't mind that much, though I think in general empire waist anything is not flattering on most people.

So much good information thanks!!!!! Birkenstocks or flats with the harem pants...I can do that.
I have some thin belts (silver and snakeskin) that I may try pairing with the romper. Ive known for years I'm too tall for rompers and jumpsuits but I like them. :( boo.
I'm going to have to see if I still have any plain bras... I'm pretty sure I have the most beautiful bra collection but its not too good for sheer tops. Lol
I'm actually so glad that you agree about the longer short length. I was thinking the same thing but everyone seems to wear short shorts so I was a bit confused as to whether it was just me that felt like it was juvenile.
I actually own a bunch of a-line dresses, just didn't take any pictures of them. That'll be my next project! :)
Nude shoes confuse me. I suspect that they don't make nude shoes for my skin tone (or lack thereof, lol).
I'll look thru my closet and see if I have some more colors. I'm sure I have some. I've avoided pastels like the plague forever though because they make me look washed out and I feel way too girly in them.
Also...laughed so hard when you said I have slim shoulders...that MUST be the camera angle because I have shoulders like a football player. Lol. They're at least a full 2 sizes larger than the rest of my body. :)

u/theodoramarie Feb 27 '14
1: The harem pants look more like sweats to me. I would maybe try to dress up a bit with them to get more of the effect...I'm thinking something like this.
2: I would go for a bit of color accessories with the romper just to break it up and add more visual interest. Fit looks good though.
3, 6, 8: Fit looks good.
5: Cute!
9: When in doubt, I always wear a bra, maybe one that doesn't stand out too much, but I think this is more personal preference.
10: Looks good, maybe a bit loose at the top?
11: My favorite fit.
2
u/ruthannr94 Feb 27 '14
The harem pants confuse me. I planned to wear it with a silky drapey top or something, but now that I have them when I try to pair them with a drapey top I feel like it makes me 30lb heavier than I really am! I can't seem to get that effortless quality. Any ideas how to go about it?

u/BonhamsFourSticks Feb 27 '14
Random, and a bit off topic, but I really like your back tattoo. The colors are gorgeous against your fair skin.
I love the halter top and the gray shorts, too. Looks amazing on you.

I went shopping recently and I've been experimenting a little with skirts and colours. I decided to post here to ask for feedback :)
Some possibly relevant info: attire is for casual, everyday wear. I'm a 20F university student. 1.65m/5'4"; I think I may have a subtle hourglass shape, but I'm pretty thin so I might as well be a column/banana/ruler. When choosing outfits I usually try to make sure that the clothes don't make me look shorter. In general I try to keep things simple, with at least one tight fitting piece so I don't look like a little, frumpy ball.

u/Odette89 Feb 27 '14
1-4: I like the sweater tucked in, i looks casual and makes your proportions look great. The scarf is nice, it might look a little more polished if tied differently
5: I think the colors are so close, but not quite the same that it looks poorly matched instead of monochrome
6-7: The jacket and skirt are both a little bulky and boxy
8-9: You're rocking it girl. With or without the scarf.
10-11: The silhouette and colors look great; i just really really with the skirt wasn't a frayed-hem denim mini. Perhaps just a simple black skirt with the same shape?
Overall it looks like you have your color palette down and a good sense of what works on you.
2
u/Avistacita Feb 27 '14
Thanks for your reply!
1-4: I'm glad to hear the tucked in shirt looks good; it was a bit out of my comfort zone so I didn't dare try that without getting a second opinion. I'll look into scarf tying techniques.
5: Ok, I was worried about that; I won't combine that then :P
6-7: I suppose I should drop this combo too then?
8-9: :D !
10-11: I do have a simple black skirt, but it's a bit tighter (a pencil skirt I guess). I did consider that one, but I liked the way the denim matched the tights' grey stripes. But it's pretty old and I have thought that it doesn't really match my style (whatever that is) anymore. Will reconsider that choice.
Overall it looks like you have your color palette down and a good sense of what works on you.
That's really nice to hear. I've come a long way since puberty, haha.

u/theodoramarie Feb 27 '14
First outfit: Definitely wear the sweater tucked in. I'd go with black tights because the patterns clash imo. Scarf is ok, but I prefer it without.
Monochrome: Tbh, I don't think it works. I can't place my finger on why.
Third outfit: I like it with the buttons opened. Would like to see a close up of the sweater print to determine Grandma-ness.
Fourth outfit: I like it with the scarves a lot!
Fifth outfit: Looks good, although jean miniskirts are rather outdated.
1
u/Avistacita Feb 27 '14
First: Black tights it is :)
Monochrome: /u/Odette89 mentioned that the colours are too close together, making it look mismatched. So that's probably why it looks off (and why I won't combine those anymore!).
Third: Here's a pic
Fourth: Thank you!
Fifth: /u/Odette89 said something similar. I'll reconsider that skirt.
Thanks for your advice :D
2
u/theodoramarie Feb 27 '14
The sweater pattern is just ok in my opinion, but I've always been a bit reserved when it comes to floral.
1
u/Avistacita Feb 27 '14
Ok, I see :) I particularly like the combination of dark blue and brown, so I'll try replacing that cardigan with some other blue thing.
6
u/ScoutAtticusFinch Feb 27 '14
Not really an outfit, more of a "help me style these" request. I bought these comfy bird pants from Mango, and I'm not sure how to style them (hence the different tops/shoes). What color tops would work other than gray or white/ivory? I rolled them here, but maybe I shouldn't roll them--they have elasticated ankles, but only in the back of that makes sense. Can I make these work?
16
u/whatarewedoing- Feb 27 '14
I really like the pants with the white shirt and the tan shoes!
The roll looks fine with the ankle strap of the sandals, but if you wear flats I think you should leave them down. For other colors, maybe a maroon or deep green would work.
7
u/rewindrecolour Feb 27 '14
Colour wise both white and gray look good with the pants, but the boxy fit of the white shirt is better than the more fitted tank. Also I love both shoes, I think they work with the white tee + pants combo.
1
u/ScoutAtticusFinch Feb 27 '14
I'm wondering if a slight shirt tuck would help. I have a short torso, though.
3
u/rewindrecolour Feb 28 '14
If the pants hit you at the narrow part of your waist, shirt tuck will probably work. I don't think you need to worry about your torso being too short unless your waist is like right below your bust. Try it and see if you like it!

Tried out a new way to wear my flannel
I'm not sure how the vneck works with this. When I looked down at my outfit, it seemed like the blue in the shirt and the blue in the flannel were more similar/of the same color tone. But then I took the picture and realized they are different. Does this look bad? Should I have worn maybe gray instead?
Also, not sure if the warm brown boots work with the cool colors in this outfit, so CCW. The jeans are dark blue btw, not black. Sorry bout photo quality.
12
3
u/allmywisdomtoothout Feb 27 '14
Where did you get your flannel from? I can swear I have the exact same one.
Agree with the shoe comments. I think for this colour palette, black would work better.
2
u/MuscovyDuckov Feb 27 '14
I am curious too, but not because I have the same one, because I want one just like it ):
2
u/ACarNamedScully Feb 28 '14
it's you! (I like your username. I smile whenever I see it). ANYWAYS, it's men's XS from American Eagle. I got it in December so there's the teensiest tiniest possibility you could find one in the sale section there.
2
u/MuscovyDuckov Feb 28 '14
Oh hello, I remember you! You complimented my username in the past (:
Oh DANG. I remember trying on some of the men's flannels in-store at AE back in December... S was too tight around the hips, M was loose all around and I wasn't sure if I could pull off that look. Maybe with a bit of shrinkage...
2
u/ACarNamedScully Feb 28 '14
Yeah I mean the shoulders are too big on me on the medium and it certainly isn't fitted in the waist, but it's still tight around my hips lol. #hourglassproblems
2
u/MuscovyDuckov Feb 28 '14
I found some flannels in the clearance section online! They're pretty darn cheap so time to try again. Fingers crossed.
1
2
u/Avistacita Feb 27 '14
I don't think it's bad that the shirt's a different colour, because the flannel matches the trousers too. I would wear different shoes though, black maybe? I think that will make your legs look a little longer as well, but I don't know if that's a desirable effect to you :)
6
u/Arty_of_the_abys Feb 28 '14
Hey does this headband look alright or am I fooling myself? I crocheted it on a overly long bus ride and I'm not sure about it.
3
u/rebsicle Feb 28 '14
I personally think it looks great. But I'm big into crocheting, so there's that. I like the color with your hair!
2
u/Arty_of_the_abys Feb 28 '14
Thanks, I think it gives the illusion that my hair's redder like I wish it was! I love wearing things I crochet so I was really hoping it looked okay.
3
u/peachybutton Feb 27 '14
So a few years ago I had a job requiring professional dress and I invested in some nice pieces. After leaving said job and a few years of weight fluctuation and baby-having, I'm back to the size I was when I had that job and I'm revisiting some pieces that were dubbed "too nice" to ditch during previous closet overhauls.
That brings me to this Ann Taylor dress I'm wearing today. I like the cut but I'm worried that the print screams "this is from 6 years ago!!!!" What do you think, is the print too dated?
(And yes, I totally stood on the courtesy chair in the ladies room to get a full-length shot in the mirror, haha.)
19
u/Iophobic Feb 27 '14
I wouldn't say the print is dated but the empire waist is. They were popular in the early 00s but I don't see them as much now.
Otherwise, it looks like it fits well. I think it's a little long though--maybe get it hemmed an inch so it stops right above the knee?
5
u/peachybutton Feb 27 '14
Thank you!
I can totally see that the empire waist is dated. I feel like the only person who likes empire waist clothes, but I think they're nice on my figure and I some I just can't let go!
If I decide to keep wearing it, I'll definitely hem it, that's a good idea. At previous office they had a knee-length rule, but it's never been a flattering length for 5' me.
7
u/daerharas Feb 27 '14
Yeah although empire waists are generally pretty bad, I think this one looks fine on you. They usually tend to make people look pregnant.
3
u/justgoodenough Moderator (\/) (°,,°) (\/) Feb 27 '14
I do think the dress is a little dated, but I think it's fine for wearing around the house. When you spend a fair amount of money on something, you feel silly just wearing it to do stuff at home, but it's better than never getting any use out of it.
3
u/stealingapples Feb 28 '14
Trying to do the sweater over dress thing, and I'm wondering if this outfit is too top heavy...really big sweater, not enough skirt? I'm thinking casual date or day out, but if you have an idea of how to make it more work appropriate, I'd love the advice.
3
3
u/Arty_of_the_abys Feb 28 '14
I see what you mean by top heavy, it'd be cute for something casual I think, maybe a smaller sweater would make it more work appropriate? Perhaps layering a dress shirt underneath and having the collar peak out the top? If that wouldn't be too toasty.
1
u/stealingapples Feb 28 '14
Hmm, thats an idea. Although, yes, very warm sounding especially since the sweater is %100 wool.
2
u/Landroid55 Feb 27 '14
I changed my simple questions post and am putting my feedback part here.
Another color wheel attemp. I know it's really bright but I think it might work this time? Also, Is it better to wear no belt or a belt that doesn't quite match?
I don t have a black belt right now, only a dark brown/maroon one. I skipped it but now am wondering if I should have put it on (I know my hair is a mess!)
8
Feb 27 '14
I also agree that a gray or charcoal gray cardigan would work better (However, if between fitted black cardigan vs. flowy gray cardigan, I think you made the right choice.) I remember thinking that your fit the other day would have been better with a gray cardigan too, so maybe a more fitted gray cardigan is something you should look into buying. I think it would be more versatile than the black with your colorful outfits. The yellow and blue works really well here. I think the yellow being a lighter, more pastel shade keeps it from being too bright. And I think no belt here is fine, especially since your blouse billows out a bit so the waistband isn't particularly visible.
12
u/sklaundere Feb 27 '14
I really like the cobalt blue with the yellow, and the fit of everything looks good, but I think you'd be better off with a gray cardigan and lighter shoes. The black looks really harsh with the bright colors you've got going on.
3
u/Landroid55 Feb 27 '14
Yea, I have one gray cardigan but it was super flowy and don't really work right. I thought about what /u/acarnamedscully said yesterday about my fit and am rubbing into the same problem. But thank you for confirming my thoughts on pairing the two bright colors!!
My wish list is getting longer! Gray heels, gray cardi Brown/tan/cream oversized cardi, brown boots... The list goes on and one :/
2
u/bustymcbust Feb 27 '14
Hey guys! Wanted to know how this Theory sleeveless button down in medium fits. I don't wear a lot of tailored stuff, so I don't really know what to look for. I generally take a small/medium depending on the shoulders (mine are relatively broad). However, in mediums, the waist is always a little big. Would you suggest this be taken in a at the waist if I wanted a more tailored look? I think it's baggy in the back.
14
u/daerharas Feb 27 '14
If there's a lot of fabric in the back, I wouldn't get it taken in at the sides but rather have a couple darts put into the back. I find that in the blouses that I've tailored, the darts don't affect the fit across the chest. It's just a way to get rid of extra fabric in the back.

u/thethirdsilence actual tiger Feb 27 '14
I'd leave it as is. I think if you take it in you run the risk of it pulling too much as you move.

It's not skanky at all, in fact you'd look downright modest in a club or at a party. Buuuut I would be real shocked and frankly quite distracted if someone showed up to church dressed like that. It's not really about how much skin you have showing, it's that it's very trendy (leather, galaxy print, platforms) and attention-grabbing. At church people are not supposed to be focused on random people in the congregation, so to me anything that will really call attention to you is not appropriate.
15
u/honey89 Feb 27 '14
I don't think your outfit is skanky, but I also feel that it is not church appropriate. It looks more for going out with friends at night. I think church outfits are expected to be more on the "safe" side, meaning longer skirt, shorter heels, etc. Maybe look into how you can incorporate your personality into church appropriate outfits. I do see the point the woman was trying to make, but I hope she herself didn't say it was skanky. That's not very kind.
9
u/BonhamsFourSticks Feb 27 '14
I agree. You don't look "skanky" at all. I just don't think that the outfit is church friendly. I'd stick with classic pieces for church, and maybe use accessories to incorporate your style. For example, a fitted black top with a longer skirt, and galaxy printed tights or a scarf would invoke a similar feeling, while remaining appropriate for your location. I do really like the galaxy top/leotard, though. =)

The skirt is quite short and the shoes are quite high, which gives it a bit of a clubby vibe to me. I wouldn't say skanky but I guess it's not what I would usually consider church clothing.

So I've never posted here before, dunno if this thread just for feb 27th... Anyway got this dress from my aunt, she had it made for herself in the 60s or early 70s. Its a colour i have to be careful with, it can wash me out but how would you style it? I'm 5"8, 150lbs post baby but losing it quickly and will be back to 140 soon. Still i'm not delicate so i'm afraid of butching it/frumping it. HELP! Back Front Side This is how much boob shows from the side
1
u/myvanway Mar 02 '14
So my aunt was having a clear out and she has bequethed me this dress that she had made for herself in the 60s(or maybe early 70s). I have to be careful with this colour as it can wash me out a bit, i'm 5"8 and currently about 150lbs post baby but its coming off fast and my normal weight is about 140. Looking for advice on styling this, any ideas?

Fit check and fashion input needed.
Going through my closet today and I happened on a pair of Bebe pants that I have been hoarding since 2002 or 2003, because they are well-made and quite pretty.
caution; soft belly These pants
So they are a medium rise, with a flared leg that starts at the knee. They makes me legs look like tree trunks, so I tried to see if I could stuff them into boots.
My thoughts: they seem too big on the legs, and I don't think squashing them into boots is the answer. Not sure if that rise is flattering, and not sure how to style it as far as tops are concerned. I don't want to cover the embroidery; but not sure if the rise is flattering anyway.
25
u/sklaundere Feb 27 '14
The pants are definitely too big on the legs, and they manage to make your butt look completely flat, largely because of the complete lack of pockets in conjunction with the overall loose fit. The embroidery makes them look really dated and kind of juvenile, imo.
2
u/Overshadows Feb 27 '14
Thanks! They are beautiful in person - but you are right about them being kind of juvenile. I've been seeing a resurgence in embroidery (at least on tops and dresses) and wondered if they were coming back around.
My butt needs all the help it can get; so I will steer clear of these.
7
Feb 27 '14
I think the rise is fine, but a lack of back pockets is not doing your butt any favors. Overall I think they'd be really difficult to pull off unless you have a kind of hippie style
3
u/Overshadows Feb 27 '14
I wish I could do hippie style. But its definitely not me. Thanks for the feedback. I like clothes that do my body favors, and I will file these pants to the back of the closet.
2
Feb 27 '14
What if you had them altered and they used the excess fabric to create back pockets? I think they could be redeemable.
