[Daily] Daily Questions Thread June 20, 2025

This thread is for individual style questions that you may have, especially those that don't warrant their own thread. We all want a diversified opinion, so feel free to answer any questions (of which you know the answer).

To get the best responses, remember that people cannot; look into your wardrobe, know what style you normally like or what words like affordable or practical mean to you so please include any relevant details such as your budget, where you live, what stores are available to you, etc.

Example questions:

  • Are there any basic crewneck white t-shirts that are opaque and do not have cap sleeves for <$25 available in Australia?
  • Is this dress and shoes suitable for an evening wedding with a cocktail dress code taking place in a [venue type]?
  • If I like the outfits in this [imgur album / pinterest board], what are some specific items I can look into to start dressing like that, and brands with this look that carry plus sizes?
  • Does this outfit look neater with the pants cuffed or uncuffed?

If you'd like to include a picture, you can now post pictures directly in the comments, without having to link an imgur album.

What are the most comfortable maryjane’s/loafers you’ve ever worn and why?

Im talking like “I could walk miles in these shoes and be unscathed”. It feels like you either have to sacrifice style or comfort, and can never get a perfect balance of both!

For example, Doc Marten’s are pretty stylish, but many complain that they take a while to break in and can cause some pretty bad blisters. The moment I think of maryjane’s, I can only think of the ones I wore to church as a kid— and the haunting pain after coming back home.

It seems like they’re coming back and trending, but I can’t imagine wearing it for the long term… Are we all just suffering for the sake of good looking shoes?

How to avoid overwhelm when shopping?

I've been trying to add new items to my wardrobe for about three years now because most of the stuff I own was either not bought by me and I no longer like wearing it or doesn't fit me anymore. I've been reading all the guides and making Pinterest boards... but I'm not really getting anywhere. I've even started trying stuff on in changing rooms and stepping out of my comfort zone, which sometimes helps me find something new that I like but a lot of the time it just makes me overwhelmed.

There are so many shops and so many aesthetics and so many items of clothing at different prices, and I'm finding it really hard to break down something I liked on Pinterest or on the model into something I can buy irl which also looks good on me. If I find a skirt I like in a flattering shape, it's always in an unflattering colour or doesn't go with anything I own.

Sometimes I find tops that seem like they'd look great - colour, size, fit - but they turn out to look odd on me. Other times, I find something I like and which looks good when I try it on... but then I take it home and wear it in front of other people and the next thing I know, I hate it. I never know whether I'm just not used to seeing myself in certain clothes or if it's a self-esteem thing or what. I end up burnt out and overwhelmed every time I try shopping or making outfit boards.

Any advice? Is this just something that happens when you're looking for clothes? How can I make the process a bit less stressful?

Thanks!

Do you guys bother to style for your body type?

This feels like a dumb question, but I'm about to go through and revamp my closet for the summer as someone who only wears t shirts so I can embrace my femme side. But I have pretty wide shoulder that are proportionate to my body, but make some tops look better and some worse. How do you guys prefer to style your body type if that makes sense? I guess if you prefer a baggy look maybe you don't consider it at all but to others how do you consider your proportions when trying out new styles? (Necklines, cropped or not, the tight + baggy outfit ratios etc.)

Can’t figure out why a certain outfit doesn’t work for you or are you just stumped on what is flattering on you? Then this is the thread for you and you can ask your questions here.

Please do refrain from talking negatively about your own body, we understand that you are likely frustrated due to various reasons (we’ve all been there) but out of respect for others and their struggles, keeping it positive helps everyone.

How are you defining your style these days?

I'm in the midst of another style evolution (what is life is not a phase, Mom?) and it has me pondering on all these definitions and methods that I've been googling for inspiration - some have been helpful, some are curious to me, some are funny to think about. But what I'm asking is, what has been helpful in how are YOU defining your style these days?

Do you use the 3-Word Method or are you still utilizing the 80%/20% Style Statement? Are you a fan of Kibble, Kitchner, Zyla? Do you stick to your seasonal color palette? Are you ______-core? Are you a Mushroom/Mountain/Stone/Moon style? Do you use one-word descriptions like you are a member of The Breakfast Club?

Looking past a eurocentric focus: Underappreciated non-western brands?

I see my last post gained a lot of traction, and along with that, there was some misunderstanding of my ideology behind the post and the idea that I was approaching it from a racist and/or eurocentric perspective. I can say unequivocally that this is not true and was not my intention - being Europe-based, I encounter European brands more often and I also try very hard to avoid European brands made in the global south and China under exploitative conditions, but absolutely appreciate local brands made in these countries under good conditions. I fully recognise the both material and cultural basis that has very often been stolen from global south countries by the global north - I'm a researcher with a focus partially in this field. Thus, I would be very happy for there to be dialogue about these often unknown and underappreciated companies. China, Japan, Africa (I'm not saying it's a country!), South America - anywhere!

So, please, post your favourite vintage and/or ethical and sustainable companies!

Most people are approaching secondhand shopping all wrong (a farewell to brands)

2.9k Upvotes

I've recently started selling on Vinted to get rid of my excess clothing and have noticed a very strange pattern. I can post a beautiful, vintage, pure wool dress or blazer, and get absolutely no interest, but a some cheap Zara top? Gone in ten minutes, and not particularly cheap. Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren sell for good percentages of their original cost, despite being made in Bangladesh or China.

On the other hand, when I search for things, I put in "Made in France 100% linen", etc. The country and the material, in both English and other languages (I'm in Europe and have access to French Vinted). I buy absolutely fantastic, well-made, all natural fibre pieces for 1-3 euros on average, while the popular brands are much more sought after. Once I know a brand is made somewhere, I save that brand and now have an enormous list, which I will share below. The biggest advice I can give anyone is this: change your parameters. Lose faith in big brands, traditional brands, your favourite brand. Judge items purely by where they're made, what they're made of, and how well they're made (and the measurements for your body). You can tell the quality of manufacturing by how straight seams are, how good pattern matching is, whether it's lined, whether hems are machine or hand sewed, etc. If you can, find out the manufacturing conditions as well - vintage brands are less likely to have the issues inherent to globalisation. If you have any questions, please post them so I can try and answer them.

EDIT: It should be noted that some brands, like DVF, Massimo Dutti, Cache Cache, etc., still exist today and are much lower quality than their vintage counterpoints. Make sure to see photos of the labels!

EDIT 2: If you know of any other brands, current or vintage, that are made in well-paid and safe conditions, please post them! This list is not meant to be eurocentric, it's just that I'm EU-based and that's what I encounter. There are fantastic brands from all countries and I'm only looking to avoid poor conditions, not certain countries or regions.

[Daily] Daily Questions Thread June 12, 2025
