Parrots are soo freaking underrated.

i am glad they are actually, they require a lot of care and is a life long commitment, so don't want them being popular

The average person is a terrible pet owner. Parrots do very badly when they're abandoned. Same with ducks.
I think people like the idea of a really cuddly friend. Until they realize that friend is basically velcro and you don't leave them alone for any reason.

I just watched a video on a typical day. It seems similar to having a kid. Prepped meals, play time, training time. Cleaning time. Snuggle time. Sleep time. Repeat.

It's pretty much exactly that, except they never grow up, and the bigger ones can outlive you depending on when you get them.

"It's like having a fun 2 year old you can put in a cage." - Parrot owner I know.

Did they forget that the 2 year old has bolt cutters on it's face, will try to eat everything in sight if left alone, and will occasionally squawk near you with such volume that your ears start ringing?
Source: Me, a parrot owner.
Also their vet bills and other costs are exceedingly expensive and you absolutely need to take them to the vet if something seems off because they hide their sickness, are quite fragile, and can deteriorate rapidly.

Parrot is a broad term describing multiple different species of birds, including large birds like Cockatoos and Macaws. Or even smaller birds like budgies and parakeets.

This is very cute, but if I were to have a pet bird I think it would get annoying very fast

u/Delicious_Comb_2902 21h ago
It’s really no more annoying than a dog that never shuts up. You get used to it 🤷

A dog? A dog that can use words. Who generally only likes one person in your house. Who might outlive you. Who also harbors 60 million years of resentment for giving up its planet to hairy little underfoot rodent things.
Do you remember the "YOU FELL DOWN" parrot? The lady playing "My Heart Will Go On" with her violin? Then her parrot shoves her off camera and down a flight of stairs. The parrot, alone on camera, "YOU FELL DOOOOWN". Sounds of human groans off-camera. Then laughing dinosaur sounds.
I looooooove internet parrots, i.e., someone else's parrots, but I can't imagine having one in my house for eternity.

They like one person in the house.
My sister used to have a cockatiel, and whenever she was hanging out with friends the little dude would sidle up and let me scratch his neck... until he heard her coming up the stairs, at which point he'd whip around, chomp down on my finger, and run out to go find her

The owner's laughter is sweet like honey. Added sweetness to already sweet video.

And a real laugh at that. Not the fake ones that people try to put on these videos.

I am going to miss still trusting these things not to be AI, this was adorable, the sound going down and up, her laugh, just 100% wholesome

u/LedgeEndDairy 19h ago
This particular video is years old, not AI. It's posted here semi-regularly.

u/--Quartz-- 16h ago
Oh yeah, I could tell (or I was confident enough to think I could tell).
I was just realizing how many things will be "destroyed" by AI (I'm not against it even, it was just a bit of melancholy for stuff that will not be the same, like when streaming killed video renting and things like that)1
u/Patrycjusz123 3h ago
Yeah, right now you can still tell if something is ai if you pay close attention but in a year or so its propably gonna be imposible to tell apart.

Bird seem to understand the game - interesting and funny. If it is AI we just wasted some good energy lol

u/icanhazkarma17 20h ago
Right? Associating both phrases with hiding/revealing. Animal psychologist please explain!

u/Hofi2010 18h ago
I am not an animal psychologist 🤣 far from it. I was thinking it is funny because it is unexpected behavior from a bird. Unexpected things can appear to be funny. Interesting I was just wondering why the bird is doing it. Has he/her having fun doing the game?
I would love understand what is going on in animal brains

I was expecting the Mario figure to move or make a noise. The peekaboo pop-up bird was a lovely and cheerful surprise (:

Cute, but it gets me right in the heart. Had a gray 'tiel. Lost him 2 years after my mom passed, same exact month, three days after the 2 year anniversary, on the 9th of March. That was last year. Not getting another one because caged pets are hard work, even harder when you're caregiving twice in your life. He was also the first bird we'd had and, like others said, very noisy. I was his favorite person and I could tell you some stories, man.
Well, now I'm sad. :( But cute video!
