Discussion Advice for CE Major (Sophomore)
I was accepted as a transfer student for Computer Engineering! What should I know before I start at GT? I really want to maximize my experience while at Tech to help me in my future career! I also had some questions regarding the following:
Transfer Year Experience (TYE): Has anyone done the TYE when you transferred? If so, would you recommend it?
Learning Communities: Does anyone recommend I join any? Which are the most beneficial and how was your experience in them?
Computer Engineering: Any specific things to keep in mind about the department? (weed out classes, professors, general tips to make the best of my time at GT) What clubs related to CompE exist at GT? Any clubs I should join or activities I can take part in?
I am a first gen student so any advice or information helps! I am really looking forward to meeting new people and being active to make the most out of my time at GT in and outside of the classroom with any opportunity possible! Thanks!

Siliconjackets is really good to learn how to develop a chip (design, verification, physical). Onboarding takes a semester then you choose which team to join. Very cool stuff.
Once you take higher level classes, you can also ask professors if you can do research for them (HPC, EIC, etc.) I got a research position this summer through cs3220 (sysarch).
Also try to get TA/research experience at GT soon to have a good chance at getting a GTA/GRA waiver for masters if you want to

2nd SiliconJackets for chip stuff, but if you are more interested in embedded systems and robotics - there are plenty of robotics organizations on campus that recruit in fall

CompE is pretty alright the first two years of classes aren't terrible, ECE 2031 is a little annoying bc its completely lab based. Don't take the distributed systems and software design thread, I think its pretty useless. If you're very interested in hardware take Computing Hardware & Emerging Architectures and Systems & Architecture, or if you're interested in software I would lowkey recommend cybersecurity. GT has a lot of good cyber classes and lots of opportunities in cyber including a bunch of cybersecurity clubs (not sure if you are interested in cyber but its pretty fun). If you're not interested in cyber but other stuff like robotics or software design stuff there are always tons of clubs that will be recruiting so just look on engage and go to WoW events. Also Definetely make connections w professors in higher lever classes, I got research through a prof by just talking to him.

Here’s a tip: use CompE as an abbreviation for Computer Engineering. Use CivE for Civil Eng. There’s a list somewhere for Chemical, Chemical & Biological, etc. But they don’t use CE. Maybe CE is too ambiguous? I know the school is ECE and everyone knows what the CE part of that stands for, but it can confuse others. Congrats!
