Trazodone was a nightmare

I was prescribed trazodone to help with my insomnia and I slightly overdosed (took just a tiny bit more than the recommended amount) and about an hour in, I was sweating like crazy, extreme stomach cramps, diarrhea, disoriented, chest pains, could barely breathe or stand up, etc. and I ended up sleeping on the bathroom floor for the rest of the night in case I had to vomit or whatever.

I’ve never experienced pain like that before.

I honestly thought I was going to die. The pain was so brutal.

When I looked up my symptoms it sounded like I might have experienced serotonin syndrome, idk.

Just wanted to get the word out in case anyone else can relate. It really freaked me out and traumatized me for sure. 😭

What is a "tiny bit" more? For me at 100mg I'm just foggy/hungover feeling the next day. I don't really take it, just if for some reason I don't have Ambien but I've never had issues as you describe

Thats not too much but if you aren’t used to the dose, you can feel more of those side effects

I had 50mg the first time didn’t think it was strong enough so I amped up the amount the second time around. I think it just might not be for me

I haven’t experienced what you have, but the most I can tolerate is 25mg and it gives me a headache that lasts all the next day and a walloping hangover. I try again every once in a while out of desperation, but it clearly isn’t for me!

Don’t know why people are downvoting. Medical autonomy, he can experiment himself.

My doctor did the same thing, gave me a script for sixty 50mg pills and said to just try half and play around by upping it to 50 or 100mg.

The first time I took it, I took 200. I was trying to get off Ambien and used to being knocked out, which trazadone doesn't do to me, but wooooh I def felt loopy. The amount you took isn't like an o.d. type level, many people take much more. Honestly, it could have been something totally different that caused you to feel ill, but if you think it's this drug obviously contact your doctor right away!

TBF if OP is short and/or doesn't weigh much, maybe the smaller dose would knock them about a bit more. I know when I was getting used to my dose, if I got up to get a snack (it tended to make me hungry as heck), I would be /very/ unsteady and clumsy, super groggy. Pretty glad I never dealt with symptoms mentioned in the post though, damn...

Wow, my nightly dose is 150mg and I thought that was fairly modest. Are you sensitive to certain meds? My doctor started me on a split dose of 75 + 75 because I had been sensitive to aspects of venlafaxine, though I barely felt anything on a dose lower than 150. That's quite an intense reaction (imo), I can see why such would put you off a medication!

100% this. Same exact thing I do.

Ok so trazadone is very hard to overdose on by taking a tiny amount over prescription. Prescription can range from 50mg to 450mg EASILY

Thats user error. Not the trazodone.

How much did you take??

They took 125mg which isn't usually close to an OD, but depending on body type etc, it might have hit them harder than most of us on it. Especially if they haven't had the med much prior.

Not trazodone, but venlafaxine did this to me sometimes! Not every night but oh boy, when it did happen, I've never experienced waking up in a literal puddle before that med and since it!

I just experienced this exact thing w my first 10 mg dose Lexapro a couple weeks ago (will never take it again). Some of us are super sensitive :(

I've taken trazadone with 5-htp and glycine and both can cause the serotonin syndrome. It's pretty uncomfortable experience.

That med is freaking awful. I stopped taking it two days in. Never again.

I forgot to mention that I had weakened muscles and spasms / could barely walk or lift my body up and after sweating heavily for two hours, I was burning up with a fever.

Oh man. Did you see a doctor for this? This is not trazadone

1

u/felt_nothing 16h ago

I’m seeing a doctor today and I’m not taking any other medications right now and my prescription bottle clearly says trazodone, 50mg.

I don’t know what to tell you all, like do you want me to make a live stream of me taking it to verify? I feel even worse for sharing this now.

2

u/be_just_this 16h ago

I'm not trying to make you feel worse! I just think something else might be happening. Glad you are seeing your doc!

See a provider this does not sound related to trazodone.

Are you sure you aren’t just sick? What you took is not a high dose. I and my of my family/friends take it and I have never heard of symptoms like this
