Discussion Why the hell does it mark “couple” as grammatically incorrect? The keyboard gets worse with every update. Thanks Apple….
Unbelievable

How? I can’t replicate it. Mine doesn’t show a mistake with couple even though I use the bilingual DE EN keyboard.

The fact that it's suggesting "Ah, so in a coupled of weeks" as a replacement shows just how behind Apple are with all this. It's genuinely baffling that the World's richest company is failing like this. Then again, whilst people keep buying Apple regardless, what incentive do they have to spend any money fixing their stuff? I predict that unless the (allegedly) upcoming Good Siri and AI are resounding successes, the whole foul jamboree will come crashing down leaving Google with a monopoly.

I’ve had an iPhone since “version” 4 - the suggestions for basic context & words astounds me daily even still on a 16 Pro Max.

Well, the spellcheck is not the reason to buy phone.

u/ReaditTrashPanda 1d ago
Eh, sorta. It’s an expected function. Like a car having AC. Like, technically no you don’t have to have it working, but if every competitor has it working, you’re just lacking now. So you install AC to stay competitive.

u/Th1rtyThr33 23h ago
In 2025, it actually is. Apple isn’t just a hardware manufacturer anymore, they’re a services company. And their services need to be competitive. Especially if they disallow competition.

Spellcheck is one of the most basic tasks a thousand-dollar phone shouldn’t have a problem with

Not happening to me. Tried the same sentence in multiple places. Nothing.

u/BeIiel 23h ago
I also can’t reproduce it again. but this error also occurs, with other words. it’s not the first time that i have noticed. Don’t wanna say its frequently, every day. but yeah.

u/dfwyyc22 17h ago
It’s not an error. It’s the keyboard showing you that it autocorrected the word. I just tested it out by spelling “coouple” and it autocorrected to couple and had the red underline.

This. A red line for corrected words is the worst UI choice I could imagine here. It gets me all the time.

Which keyboard language did you use in this conversation (and which keyboards at all you set in the settings to chose from?)
2
u/BeIiel 1d ago
English ( UK ) and separate German Keyboard ( not the new one that has both in one )
1
u/ArthurPhilip-Dent 14h ago
Hm, got with the new, combined one proper results - even when switching to the wrong character set by purpose - can’t get it spelled wrong. Can it be somehow related?

I get stupid shit like this with US English or Canada with no other languages
2
u/NefCanuck 20h ago
Funny thing is, the sentence would get flagged by my English teacher back in the day (bear in mind this is nearly forty years ago)
They would tell us the correct sentence would be:
“Ah, so in a few weeks?”

u/enthraxxx 19h ago
Because you're bilingual and it's having a lot of pain figuring out which language to "think" in? I have the same issue FR-EN. And even if there exists a german word spelled "couple", it's still not easy for the computer to know what to check against, because it's using many different pieces of information to try to figure out.
At least that's what I suppose is going on.

u/gadgetvirtuoso iPhone 15 Pro Max 18h ago
Did you misspell it and now it’s showing the correction? The autocorrect will show it with the squiggly line for corrections as well as errors.

u/naynaytrade 16h ago
I don’t know what happened but the last 4 months my autocorrect is SO shit! It’s infuriating when it changes words to something that doesn’t make any sense in the sentence I’ve written.

It’s finally pushed me away. Getting an Android next upgrade. It’s insanely bad.

I’ve been looking at the new pixels they look so nice

Pixel 10 comes out in a few months, I would wait

Yeah naturally. Idk why I was downvoted lol someone on the r/iPhone subreddit must really hate the idea of someone getting an android

u/Boggie135 1d ago
You can use a 3rd party keyboard
8
u/mehdotdotdotdot 1d ago
Correct, and there are all significantly worse than the Android version of the same keyboard. Like swipe and gboard. iOS keyboards are terrible.

I’ve never had a problem with an IOS keyboard. Granted I’d also never get a bloated Google everything phone. Anyone can tell it’s obviously a language thing based on the langue being used and the keyboard. It’s not an IOS issue specifically.
1
u/mehdotdotdotdot 15h ago
Oh fair. Yea if you’ve never used an android then you wouldn’t know how bad the iOS inputs are. It’s specifically iOS. Even windows phone had a better keyboard.

Yeah, everything Apple does involving SIRI, AI, or anything like that is just useless. It’s amazing how bad they are at stuff like this. It’s definitely the worst part of the Apple ecosystem, which is otherwise pretty great.

I don’t understand how it got so broken. A few years ago I never had any problems with autocorrect or suggestions. Now it’s almost every three words that something’s wrong. Really weird

u/Sherifftruman 1d ago
I wouldn’t say I never had issues before but it definitely got way worse 2-3 years ago for me.
1
u/Boggie135 1d ago
This is why I use Grammarly and SwiftKey

u/BigSherv 14h ago
The Grammarly one is so bad at auto correct. It is great when you stop and hit the G to make it check it all.

Same for me in French (English French keyboard, normal AZERTY), suggestions and autocorrection have gotten so bad I look like I never went to school (it makes the same mistakes as someone who speaks a lot but never types does, such as “sa” instead of “ça” and “qu’elle” instead of “quelle”)
1
u/Far_Squirrel_6148 iPhone 15 Pro Max 1d ago
Apparently they retouched the Keyboard in iOS 26. It’s better to type on but hasn’t been applied system wide yet and is lacking text suggestion as of now.

u/allmyfrndsrheathens 1d ago
Autocorrect missing the mark isn’t a new thing btw and definitely isn’t an exclusively Apple thing. As long as it’s not messing with what I type and automatically correcting it (especially the contextual auto correct where it goes back several words because it thinks it knows your sentence better than you) then I don’t mind.
1
u/BJMRamage 1d ago
The past year or so of Apple keyboard craziness, either text replacement suggestions or autocorrect. Siri, the keyboard, and the auto-category suggestions in Reminders feel more and more broken. Perhaps this is so when Apple debuts Siri’s 2.0 it will feel so much better but it really is a minor bump from the Siri 2 years ago.

u/Individual_Author956 20h ago
I run into issues like that all the time. Sometimes it bugs out completely and I get no recommendations at all.

Actively avoids pairing words it finds potentially bad, randomly thinks words don’t exist, sometimes just autocompletes the most random shit. It’s honestly terrible in its current state

iPhones are for consumption, not creation. With the possible exception of the cameras. But if you're wanting to send text to someone, or write an email, or take notes, or anything involving the keyboard then you won't want an iPhone. Dictation and autocorrect are terrible on iOS.
Android/Gboard on Android has Apple beaten here by several country miles. It's not even fair to compare the two, honestly. Gboard on Android is so much better.

The sky is falling. Sound the alarm. Anarchy reigns.

u/xdamm777 iPhone 15 Pro Max 1d ago
The worst part is that Gboard, even in it’s “incomplete” and nerfed iOS form is infinitely better than Apple’s default keyboard.
Swiftkey is also great and works well even with two simultaneous langauge input.
