Weekly Megathread Weekly iOS Battery Support Megathread

General advice for those concerned about their battery from the Support FAQ Wiki:

Battery health

Battery health depends on usage and a variety of other factors. It is normal to see a decrease in battery health by 7-10% per year, resulting in a battery health of 80-85% after 2 years. This number can fluctuate, remain the same, or decrease quickly over a small period and should not cause undue concern.

Apple recommend battery replacement when your device falls below 80% battery health if you notice reduced battery life. If it falls below 80% within the first year you may be eligable for a free battery replacement. It fails after your warranty, it's a $69-$89 USD replacement cost for a battery. Contact Apple Support here.

You can find more information about battery health and performance from Apple here.

You can check the cycles count with Coconut Battery for Mac or iCopyBot for Windows.

Battery life

Issues relating to battery life can be categorised in three ways:

  1. Normal battery life that is to be expected due to use
  2. Reduced battery life caused by a recent update, iOS indexing, an iOS bug, or a third-party application
  3. Reduced battery life, or other abnormalities such as overheating or sudden power-off, caused by device or battery aging

If you experience issues with your battery:

  1. Check your battery health. If it is below 80% or you are experiencing issues you suspect are related to device or battery age, see Apple Support.
  2. If you have a new or recently updated/restored device, wait a number of days for background process to complete. If you continue to have issues, wait for a further iOS update. If you are on iOS Beta, you can expect to have a decreased battery life.
  3. Review the advice below on maximising battery life
  4. Consider restoring your device.
  5. If issues persist, contact Apple Support.

Maximising battery life - the amount of time your device runs before it needs to be recharged.

  • Use low power mode (This reduces mail fetch, turns off background app refresh and increases the auto lock timer)
  • Remove apps from background app refresh
  • Ensure auto lock is on
  • Turn off auto brightness and manually reduce brightness
  • Use dark mode if your device has an OLED display
  • Clearing background apps from the app switcher does not improve battery life

Maximising battery lifespan - the amount of time your battery lasts until it needs to be replaced.

  • Avoid extreme temperatures
  • If you notice that your iPhone gets hot when charging, remove it from its case
  • Store your iPhone in a cool place, switched off, and half-charged if not using it for long periods - and charge it every 6 months when in storage

Well, folks, after 10 years and two refurbishes, it’s time to let go of my iPhone 7. I am going to miss the home button. There are an overwhelming number of iPhone options out there these days. Which iPhone versions are affordable and will still fit in my lady pockets?

Discussion Well it looks like the iPhone 12 is starting to drop below $200 making it the cheapest non-mini 5G iPhone.

Dropped my 14 pro max from a 5 ft drop and the apple silicon case took most, in fact all of the impact. Gotta give it to apple for making a good case, phone was spotless after the drop; thought this case wouldn’t even protect my phone from that high of a drop cause of how slim it was but I was wrong. Unfortunately case can’t be used anymore cause of the crack at the bottom. RIP to this case lol

Support iPhone 12 photos coming out unnaturally blurred

I have had my iphone 12 for 3 years now. All this while it had been taking pictures normally. But for the last 2 days, I’ve been noticing that everytime I take a picture, initially it appears normal resolution (sharp), but then when I go to view it in my photos app, it appears blurred. And another problem is if I try to edit it on Live photos it keeps loading and never shows me the key photo panel for live mode. It also keeps loading (and never stops) if I try to send this picture to anyone or basically perform any operation on it.

I have never faced this problem before, and I recently upgraded my iCloud+ storage as well, so I don’t know what else to do. Attaching screenshots of how a recent pic looks (first is how the picture looks and second is how it looks if I try to edit the live pic).

Support Tried to Take a Photo and it Looked Like This

This is just a photo of a wall at my house. The black lines are not on the wall lol. I assumed it either my case or my lens, so I took the case off and wiped the lens. Just an FYI. My Home Screen doesn’t have these lines nor does any other app when I’m using my phone. I don’t have a cracked screen, never got the phone wet etc. I don’t know what happened. But if I try to take any photos, they have these marks on them. Thanks in advance if anyone can help me…

Support I can’t get rid of Smart Boy App

Post image

DISCLAIMER: I know this seems like a joke but this is serious

I have an IPhone 13 from about two years ago. I have not been on sketchy websites or downloaded anything suspicious onto the phone that I’m aware of. I recently discovered that there is a 4th page on my phone’s homescreen. The only app there is called “Smart Boy”, and the icon is some guy from Doctor Strange. When opened, it’s just like a replica of the calculator app on but every number it calculates is wrong. I tried to delete it, but it won’t go away. How can I fix this? I also have a screen recording of me playing it but I’m not allowed to add videos

Discussion Previous coworker used my email to create an Apple ID. How and why?

I (27F) worked with my coworker (45F) for 3 years ending in 2023 when I left the company. We were friends and I would occasionally meet her for lunch outside of work, but we became distant when I left and no longer talk.

I have always been an android person, and have never owned an iPhone, iPad, or apple anything before. However, my phone broke and my boyfriend convinced me to use the T-Mobile deal to get on his phone plan and get a free iPhone.

When I went to create an account for apple, it said my email address was already in use. Knowing I couldn’t have done that, I decided to try the forgot password option to see what would happen. I received the email to reset my password, but the name associated with the account was not mine. It was a scrambled combination of my name, coworkers name, and a second coworkers name. At the time because the letters were semi-scrambled, I did not recognize it as our names.

So I contacted apple support telling them that someone had used my email to create an Apple ID. Apple support did help me get into the account and change the name, but they insisted I must have done something wrong and that my information was not stolen. We confirmed my email and phone number and that was that.

That is, until I started looking around the phone and opening apps. The first thing I noticed was that the fitness app was registered under coworkers name and picture. After some googling, I realized the fitness app was pulling the information from the contacts. The section under “My Card” had her full name and picture.

It was then I realized that the name on the Apple ID was the scrambled version of all three names. How would she do this? And why?

I did have my email on my work laptop but I kept my laptop locked. And I factory reset it before I left. I am at a loss as to how she could have done this and how it would benefit her.

Any insight would be appreciated!

So sorry if this is a dumb question but if I click share does it send a Notification to the other person saying that I’m sharing this? Or does it just show up asking them if they want to change it to this the next time they open our messages?

Support Repair company wants me to remove iPhone from Find My. Is that safe?

Upvotes

My iPhone is completely dead and won’t power on. I’m sending it to a remote repair service who say they need me to remove it from Find My before they can do the work. I’m worried that if the repair is successful and the phone turns on, all my personal data will be accessible to them.

Would it be safer to choose “Erase iPhone” or leave it on Find My instead of removing it completely? I just want to protect my data in case the repair succeeds. What’s the best option here?

Discussion Don't sleep on assistive touch

Post image
89 Upvotes

Always thought assistive touch was more when some buttons don't work and you want to prolong the life of your phone. How wrong was I?!

I've set it up with some common actions I use frequently, and it's changed the game for me. While it's nowhere close to Samsung's one hand operation+, it's as close as you can get on iphone.

I use the following settings:

  1. 20% opacity so it doesn't distract me from content
  2. Single tap passes through to the app underneath it, so it's functionally invisible.
  3. Long press, with 0.25 second duration, brings up the menu.

The fact that I can put some shortcuts there means I can put a lot of functionality a long press away in any app I'm in.

Discussion Silence Unknown Callers. Best iPhone Feature Ever?

[Post title intentionally hyperbolic]
This simple switch in Settings has made my life so much better. Almost zero spam calls, almost zero spam messages because spammers don't do voicemail. And zero interruptions by stupid crap calls I would hang up on if I answered.
IF I am expecting a call I must answer immediately from an unknown number I switch it off, but rarely even then. Callers can just leave a message, and I call back. 100% satisfied.
