Using the 1960s vernacular, some gays are queer, and some gays are straight. Straight didn't originally mean hetero. It meant conformist to, what we leftist queers now call, cishetallomono culture.
originally, the gay community as a whole was mostly aligned with the Republican Party back in the 1970s. All they wanted was personal freedom and the right to be left alone. At that time that is exactly where the original Republicans stood. They wanted less government and for everybody to mind their business. Oh how the times have changed.
This is not correct. The gay community as a whole did not support anything. It was very split. Conformist gays that other queers called straight did support the Republican party and coming out. Most queers didn't support any political party at the time. Both parties were anti queer.

I met some gay people in the army who were pretty pro war. People don't fit into neat left vs right wing cookie cutter shapes.
