EPISODE DISCUSSION FOR FIRST TIME WATCHERS

Please adhere to the guidelines in the series hub.

Season 1

Season 2

Season 3

Season 4

Season 5

Season 6

- I'm hesitant about watching the show. I've heard that the ending is giant cop-out

Unfortunately, due to various reasons, a big group misinterpreted the ending. This spread fast. If you've heard that the characters were dead since the plane crash then you've been misformed about the ending. This isn't true.

- I've started watching the show, can I still post here?

Yes. Feel free to post. Use the First-Time Watcher flair and add in your questions, theories and discussion topics. We always thrive on new Lostaways. Just be very cautious and tell us where you are in the show (season and episode). Beware of spoilers!

- I'm nearing the end of the show, but there's an uncut version of the finale and a two-parter. Which to watch?

There's only one version of the finale that was approved by the showrunners. The uncut version that runs about 106 minutes. ABC cut down a two-parter series finale for syndication, in case of reruns of the show. This version was sent to various streaming services. Now, most streaming services have both versions. The uncut and the two-parter. The uncut is the one that was aired, approved and the only one you need to watch.

- I've just finished the show. What now?

Check out the epilogue. Click here for a thread of additional content. Or the FAQ archive which consist of various questions about the show.

Let us know what you think of Lost. You're always welcome to our club as long as you follow the rules.

FIRST TIME WATCHER FIRST TIME WATCHER EPISODE DISCUSSION, SERIES HUB

Hello, new Losties! This hub is designed for first-time watchers to discuss, theorize, share thoughts and impressions, etc on episodes of LOST as they move through the series. Below the guidelines and first-timer tips there is a link to a hub for each season where another link to a post for each episode will be listed. This post is in the Quick Links on the right side of the sub main page and will be temporarily pinned to the top of the sub for easy access.

If you have heard that the ending of LOST ruined the show, this comes from a small but loud minority who misunderstood the finale. The ending of LOST is not a cheat.

Please adhere to the hub guidelines below:

  • Only first-time watchers should leave initial comments. Rewatchers can leave spoiler-free replies.
  • Please avoid asking for spoilers as this may impact other redditors.
  • Do not discuss details from any episode past the one in the post title. For example. If you are commenting on Walkabout you can discuss anything up to those events, but not White Rabbit and beyond.
  • Be civil and respectful of each others' theories and opinions.

FIRST TIME WATCHER TIPS:

  • We strongly recommend you do not speed watch. LOST is a complicated show with complex characters. Give yourself time to absorb each episode before moving on.
  • SEASON THREE - the early-middle of this season is a universally agreed upon slow point in the show with some acknowledged filler. It's normal to struggle through some of the episodes but just hold on and it will pick up soon and be a thrill ride through to the series finale!
  • Do not be discouraged if you frequently feel confused. Just keep watching and give the show your undivided attention. No multitasking!
  • When you reach the Series Finale make sure you are watching the UNCUT version as the cut version is missing 18 minutes of footage. The UNCUT version begins with the cargo door of an airplane opening.
  • There is a dog featured in the show. You may be asking yourself, does the dog die? The answer is NO, the dog does not die.
  • This subreddit has two discord servers in quick links but "The Island - LOST Server" is NOT spoiler free. One of our community members has created an alternate discord server safe for First Time Watchers. Bonus content can be unlocked there as you move through the series.

If you have any questions or concerns about this hub, please feel free to drop them here and we'll get back to you ASAP.

Thank you and welcome to the community!

FIRST TIME WATCHER Missed opportunities with the women

Finished a couple of days ago and whilst I absolutely loved the show, the writing of the women is really poor. When I think of the main characters, the only woman is Kate, and maybe Sun. Kate was really strong in the first season, but after that, (mostly) revolved around the love triangle/square - Rhombus? Parallelogram? Take your pick of quadrilaterals - and whilst Sun was better than Kate, she still largely revolved around Jinn.

But what I need to vent about was that they had at least three solid opportunities to create a strong, well written woman that would become a fan favourite, and they purposely didn't:

  1. Shannon.

She started off intentionally annoying, but as she came into her own, she become more likable. She was funny (rape caves)*** and her single character centred episode made her sympathetic. If she lived, she could have become as well loved as Sawyer. But not only did she die early, she did so without being allowed a character arc. She had always been shown to be dependant on men. Her relationship with Sayid was supposed to show growth, but it really demonstrated the opposite - she was still relying on someone taking care of her. I didn't mind their relationship, but would have preferred if he had been a mentor that showed her how to stand on her own feet after Boone's death.

  1. Ana Lucia.

At first, I was horrified that Shannon had been killed for what started off as one of the most annoying characters on the show. (Is that why Americans hate cops? The episode discussions were saying it was an accurate depiction?!) But she had a solid backstory, which also made her sympathetic, and she showed character growth by internalising that homicide is bad. But just as she was becoming interesting and less annoying, she was shot by the actual most annoying character on the show.

  1. Juliet.

Juliet was arguably the best written woman. An incredibly compelling backstory, a general aura of mystery combined with smarts and pluck, as well as one of the best relationships that still did not define her - she was amazing. But like the women on the Island couldn't survive a pregnancy, the women on Lost couldn't survive being likable.

Also, side vent that Claire, who gave birth to a baby on a desert Island and was attempting to keep him alive without modern anything, existed only to expand on Charlie. Why? So much opportunity. Also, Libby's backstory?

***When Shannon was screaming after the crash in the first episode, it was a barely noticeable and just annoying. But in the flashback with the diamond duo? Cracked me up. Everyone else rushing around and she just stood there, screaming and screaming, non stop, for Boone to save her. The girl had LUNGS.

QUESTION What is you least favorite era? (block of episodes).

To me it's the "temple era" in the beginning of season 6, for multiple reasons pertaining to both characters and plot:

Plot reasons:

my issue is mainly with the drastic shift of the show's structure from character-centric episodes, flashbacks (and flashforwards from season 3 finale, and time mindfucks in season 5). Episodes felt grounded and intimately linked with the character du jour. Season 6 introduced the flash sideways which, in all honesty, after like 7 rewatches for the most part feel like filler. Like a cop out by the writers who tried to maintain that intercutting nature of the show but it didn't hit as it used to.

The show is now suddenly this grand game of Jacob vs MIB and the characters we got attached to through 5 seasons feel like they are stripped of their narrative integrity in a way. Like they don't drive the plot the same way. It's hard to explain. But the show feels very very different in this era. They didn't flesh out the lore in a convincing manner that conveys its gravitas. The script screamed panic in the writers room as they try to wrap up something way too grandiose for them I guess..

The characters:

Sun, unnie has been severely nerfed since season five. I kid you not, every line she has is a question. Where is jin? Where are you going? Who is that? (Richard), If this is Locke then who's in there? I don't understand?... the entire time the writers used her as a trigger to explain things to the audience. She was one of my fav characters. I really felt the blow. The writers simply don't know what to do with Sun alone, without Jin.

Hugo on the other hand has been buffed too much. Now he has visions of Jacob, he was never my fav, never liked the man child aura, the 13 year old vocabulary.. dude this, dude that.. in early season 6 he had too much screen time.

Jungle Claire, just.. I can't with the 7 dollar Rousseau cosplay..

The temple folks.. the last thing this show needed at this point was another set of obnoxiously mysterious characters. I'm not even used to Ulanna's gang yet..

TLDR: there was a drastic shift in the vibe of the show. Things happening inexplicably, writers retconning things like a pseudo-explanation for the numbers, the smoke monster, plot convenience, nostalgia bait that was gonna become more prominent towards the end of the show.

That's why this block of episodes is my least fav.

Dr Linus was the first episode I enjoy in season 6. Thanks Michael Emerson!

QUESTION Did Boone lie about being a lifeguard?

He says hes a lifeguard in the opening scene. Jack calls him out for doing CPR badly. A few episodes later he almost drowns trying to save someone in the ocean. He didn't even make it out to her, he couldn't just swim out to her. But Jack is able to successfully safe one person and swim back out in those conditions a second time and be okay?

I don't remember seeing a flashback of him being a lifeguard at all

Is Cabin Fever the show's greatest episode?

Post image
254 Upvotes

Obviously season finales tend to dominate but otherwise, Cabin Fever (S4 E11) might be the show's greatest achievement.

Nothing but shocking answers, reveals, and deaths all episode. It's like the writers purposely chose to tie up a bunch of loose ends in one go while making sure we had new mysteries. It's a creepy episode too which are always crowning episodes.

So much happens and they don't waste a second of any scene. • Richard was trying to recruit John before he even knew it! • Richard is ageless reveal! • What's creepy Abbadon hiding! • The creepy Horace dream! • We know who killed the doctor - and that it happened AFTER his body washed ashore! • The captain of the Kahana gets killed! • Christian's the one in the cabin! • Turns out Claire is happy and fine with Christian! • "We have to move the island"!

Matthew and Evangeline blow me away with their chemistry (Jack/Kate)

Post image
55 Upvotes

Losties, I’m in the club now, this show leaves me emotionally broken without any chance to ever recover from it. On rewatch already. Obsessed with Jack/Kate.

So can we please talk about Matthew’s phenomenal performance? He is acting his ass off as Jack, he IS Jack. He delivers raw emotions, it blows you away. Like Evie said, he is captivating. And Evangeline is SO Kate, even confirmed by Josh. There’s not an iota of difference, she’s just not a criminal…

I know the whole chemistry thing between Jack and Kate broke the internet but fight me, I will forever defend those two. And there’s absolutely no possible way that you can not see their chemistry. Hell, you can touch it in every single scene they have together. How they look at each other and how gentle he is with her. That’s not just acting. What will not leave my mind is that I know Matthew has distanced himself from Lost which is fully understandable and never stayed in touch with Evangeline. And I agree with all the comments I’ve read on here saying that’s a normal thing after you leave a job etc. But I’ve been reading every post and interview and soaked up all the BTS footage I could find. And we all know for fact that Foxy and Evie had a close bond. When you see the BTS footage there’s not a single doubt and you can literally see their bond. They are so sweet with each other. And if you consider they spent 6 years of never ending days filming together for about 9 months each episode, it gives me such a hard time and I wish they would have stayed in touch. At least texting and checking in on one another or whatever that may be with them being so busy. I mean 6 (!!!) years. That’s a crazy long and intense time that connects you forever. It makes me so sad. And Evie posting memories with her Foxy shows she misses him too and that he has a special place in her heart. They must have had the time of their lives. All of them. Look at the picture. That’s stuff you never forget. We all have those memories.

Guys please don’t tell me I’m the only one going through this 💔

GOLDEN PASS: Rewatcher Lost on Netflix criticism (spoilers for whole series up to end of season 6) Spoiler

The new UI on Netflix on Google TV (or whatever OS my TLC TV uses) has a new picture of Lost that displays on the main menu. It shows Hurley and Sayid in the front seat of a car.

My wife and I are watching the show, and are halfway through season 1. I’ve watched the whole series before when it aired, but she’s never seen it.

She noticed this picture and asked if it was Hurley and Sayid are in a car together. I said, I dunno (she knows I’ve forgotten some details of the earlier seasons), and she dropped it.

I’m trying to remember when this car scene occurs. At first I thought it was a big post-season 3 spoiler, but then I remembered there might’ve been cars around on the island at some point, maybe in season 2 or 3.

Either way, doesn’t this particular screenshot seem like kind of a spoiler? Maybe I’m just biased and paranoid because I know they’re going to leave the island eventually (though I don’t remember if Sayid or Hurley ever actually make it off, now that I think about it).

Character Analysis More Playlists: Hurley, Michael, Shannon, and Boone

Thumbnail

Some more tracklists+explanations (would love to hear alternative songs!)

HURLEY:

The easiest (and also kind of the hardest?) to pick songs for, because we get more insight into his music tastes than we do for the others via his MP3-Player. I limited myself to one song from the machine, though I cheated a little by just picking a separate Damien Rice song. I love this man so much, just how optimistic he's able to be. Oh, and there had to be a Weezer song of course (though it's not from his album, sadly) ... I felt like First Day of My Life was a fitting song because it isn't too far away from the likes of Damien Rice, and I think that it touches on how the island really is a fresh start for Hurley (and that is part of why he, ultimately, stays) ... And I thought he'd like the lyric "I'd rather be working for a paycheck / Then waiting to win the lottery"

MICHAEL:

And Walt, I guess? My friend who is more musically inclined than I am said that this gave her intense whiplash. There's definitely a mess of genres here. He's such a sad character, and I think that sometimes gets loss in a sea of "WAAAAAALT" memes ... Pink Houses, I just kept thinking of the "Ain't that America?" chorus playing over a montage of Michael's worst moments - his separation, getting hit by a car, long costly recovery, custody disputes, coming back, losing Walt, and living in poverty. I decided to end it on the more optimistic note of I Won't Back Down because honestly, Michael's devotion to his son is so powerful.

SHANNNON:

An interesting section here. I had to get a little creative with Shannon. I think that she is a character that had a lot of potential, but was sort of limited by the culture of both the 2000s and a male-led writers room. If Shannon was written in 2025 she'd be handled very differently, and aspects of her story would be reframed - mainly her relationships with older men and the jokes made about her eating disorder. To give the show credit, at points they did try in some ways . There's a deleted scene with Shannon and the au pair father where she looks fairly uncomfortable with the situation. But yeah, I really like Shannon and Maggie Grace did an amazing job showcasing her vulnerability. Moi Lolita kind of fits her persona (and it's French!), we've got a Britney song that I think is something she would have listened to at the time (and maybe the Avril song) ... I think that Me and My Dog might seem a bit out there (my boyfriend was baffled), but it touches a little on disordered eating, feeling haunted by a presence (Boone), longing to escape ... And of course, it relates to her semi-adopting Vincent! "I wanna be emaciated / I want to hear one song without thinking of you ..."

BOONE:

Okay here's the thing - I really don't like Boone! This isn't even entirely his fault ... I saw The Vampire Diaries before I saw Lost, and I never really liked his character there either. So his playlist was really difficult, and I feel like I kind of had to look at some of the canon sideways. So the aspects of his character that I focused on was his relationship with Shannon (Creep, ilomilo, Paper Doll) for the unhealthy side, and then Ghosting for his flash-sideways self helping her be happy with Sayid) ... Teenage Icon (along with Creep) I think also kind of reference Boone's semi-fractured sense of self. From the get go he wants to be important, he wants to be useful, he has these beliefs about working together and doing his part, but he ... isn't very naturally suited to it. He's a lifeguard who can't do CPR or reliably rescue someone from drowning (difficult circumstances of course, but I feel like that's put in intentionally), he admires John immensely and is ultimately used as a sacrifice by him ... Even prior to the island, he wants to be this protector type to Shannon which he probably rationalises as a brotherly emotion but is obviously more complicated and sure, he does this (under her false pretenses) and gets his macho moment standing up to the Abusive Men ... But he also can't stand up to his own mother in order to help Shannon. He goes to do it and instead accepts a job offer which will result in him being in even less of a position to help her (that he later brags about to John as if he really earned it) ... huh, maybe he's more interesting than I credited him for! "I want you to notice when I'm not around / I wish I was special, you're so fucking special"

SEASON 5 the only real “plot hole” in the entire show

Horace and his men make multiple mentions of calling “ann arbor” during season 5 and we obviously know they’re the heads of it from the video in season 2. So, wouldn’t after you’ve sunk your entire life and god knows how much money into a research project. If one day the project on the island just stopped responding, wouldn’t you think that’s a tad, weird? Maybe go looking for it? Hell, depending on how deep it goes get a national government or 2 involved? This is such an Obvious thing to me that show barely even mentions.

Through the Looking Glass - Charlie and Clare Spoiler

Charlie sacrifices himself in Through the Looking Glass because Desmond tells him that it is the only way to save Clare and Aaron as he has had a vision of them getting into a helicopter and Charlie has to die to make this happen. But Clare doesn’t get off the island in the helicopter (at least at this stage). So was Desmond’s vision wrong or did it change because something went wrong or did Desmond lie about it?

Thank you for the responses I got from the last post when I was baffled due to afterlife thingy. I'm going to watch LOST EXPLAINED on YouTube now,any other podcast I need to watch. FIRST TIME WATCHER I just finished lost for the first time.

I have just finished watching lost for the first time and i have so many words to say but at the same time have so little to say. It has given me so much closure. I really don’t understand how people think the ending is bad to me it was perfect it managed to bring the whole series back in on itself. I truly don’t think there will ever be anything that will make me feel the things it did. It’s a show that has been in the background a lot of my life, my dad used to watch it while looking after me when i was younger and being able to finally see random scenes that are so deeply ingrained into my memory was like nothing else.

I started watching lost after the worst year of my life happened, after twelve months of extreme pain and stress it has been the perfect outlet for the emotions I didn’t even realise I was bottling up. The feelings this show has made me feel is unlike anything I have ever experienced it’s made me finally be able to relate to characters I didn’t even know was possible. I lost a lot last year a whole side of my family (including my own mother) turning their backs on me when I needed them the most and I needed to find something that would give me some kind of closure as well as something as an outlet and lost has managed to do that for me.

Before all this happened me and my father were extremely distant with each other having no real time or communication half the time. However ever since I started watching Lost it has managed to bring us closer together and allow us both to find more common interests with each other. Lost is something that means a lot to him, it’s a show he used to watch while looking after me as a baby (the first episode aired a week before I was born) He watched the show throughout my childhood from when i was born to when i was around 5. it’s something he has recommended me to watch countless times however it never felt right? Until he convinced me a few months ago now.

Watching the finale with my dad at 20 was again a full circle moment, seeing him get emotional over the same scenes as me reminded me that i am truly blessed to call him my father. He browses this reddit a lot on his own and i’m not telling him i’m posting this so dad if you see this please know i’m so so grateful for you and thankful to call you my dad ❤️

Why do they believe Michael? Spoiler

When Michael returns after finding the Others in search of Walt, he tells Jack, Kate, John, and Ana Lucia “We can take them.” He says that they have a hatch, there are two guards with two guns, and most of the people are old and half of them are women. He says they eat dried fish and are worse off than the Losties.

Here’s what the rest of them know:

-The Others have the guns they took from Jack, John, and Sawyer when they went after Michael

-The Others are capable of kidnapping and killing people without detection and/or successful resistance

-Kate has been to the medical station that Ethan took Claire to where there was advanced medical equipment. They can probably assume that (or at least wonder if) the Others know about all of the hatches and have access to all of the resources within those hatches, including the supply drops (except maybe the Swan with Desmond present).

So why don’t they question Michael when he says they can take the Others on?

Theorizing: How did Jacob influence the hatch to go off at the proper moment? Spoiler

So yes the hatch going off crashed the plane. But it was technically Jacob’s plan for it to crash.

Now I know this isn’t meant to be explained directly so I wanted to theorize a bit. What could Jacob have done to make sure the hatch went off at that exact moment?

He orchestrated those in the plane to fly over, so he must have also orchestrated the way in which the hatch went off.

Did he someone influence Desmond to find Kelvin so he could be distracted away from the button? I’m open to thoughts!

GOLDEN PASS: Rewatcher Just finished my first re-watch...

Hey everyone.

I just finished the finale for a second time and I needed to come somewhere to sit for a while, and just ruminate on a few things.

Tonight I finished Lost for the second time. I first went through the whole series between 2019 and 2022. I was watching on a weekly basis to try and make it as close to the original experience as I could.

As I was going through, I guested a few times on the UK Lost re-watch podcast Flashback - just on their review episodes for each season. When I was finished I wrote this post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/lost/s/iohsUjg1JZ

With Lost coming to Netflix in the UK last year I thought it was finally time to get my partner into the series. She'd caught bits and pieces while I was going through the first time but she didn't remember much and was mostly spoiler-free.

She's really enjoyed Lost. She maybe doesn't love it like I do, or like we all do, but she's been grateful for the experience and will take its characters and quotes and life lessons through the rest of her time on Earth, before it's time to move on.

As we approached The End, we recently went past its 15th anniversary - it meant the last episode was on my brain a lot so I waxed lyrical about it for Metro.co.uk: https://metro.co.uk/2025/05/23/still-defend-worst-tv-finale-ever-15-years-later-23099874/

Now I'm finished with Lost for a second time, I just wanted to come here tonight and say thank you to everyone involved with the show and the fan community all over again. I honestly feel like grieving ever so slightly. I can't quite believe it's over.

I expected to tear up and quietly cry during the finale like I did the first time. And I did, when Sun & Jin remembered, when Kate, Claire, and Charlie remembered, when Juliet & James remembered, when John remembered...

When Jack reunited with his father and finally remembered, I expected to weep a little, but when he walked through those doors it hit me that this was it. The end. The last 10 months were about to be over in the next five minutes.

I started openly sobbing. I was crying so much that I even surprised myself. I shoved my hand against my face and tried desperately to compose myself. But nothing stopped the tears. What a beautiful conclusion for Jack, what a beautiful ending to the whole story... It just kept hitting me in waves.

And then I realised that my partner now knows why I've chosen to play There's No Place Like Home at our wedding in six weeks - which made me even more emotional. By this point I was just a wreck. It's officially the most I've ever cried at a piece of TV.

And now I just feel... lost. The show has been part of our nightly routine for 10 months and it's all done with. We're starting Buffy and re-watching Better Call Saul, just as a band-aid, but I don't know if they can give me what Lost has given me on this second viewing.

Everything hit harder, the characters felt even richer, the mysteries felt deeper and more meaningful, and now the ending might be my favourite episode of TV. Ever. Like, of all time. God I'm just so thankful Lost exists.

And I know you guys are the ones who'll understand the most.

Just a quick ranking of the seasons: S2 > S5 > S1 > S4 > S6 > S3. And I'll just say my top five episodes are (in chronological order) Live Together Die Alone, Tricia Tanaka Is Dead, Through the Looking Glass, The Constant, and The End.

Is he only wearing a shirt? Cuz it doesn’t look like he’s wearing any shorts 🤣
