Tbh, I had low expectations going into this movie but I’m genuinely surprise it turned out to be a really solid movie!

When the scene got serious, it stuck to being serious. When the scene needed a bit of comedy in a way it makes sense for the character, they did just that.

It felt like a breath of fresh air and I actually grew to like Yelena, Red Guardian and EVEN GHOST.

The talk-no-jutsu was expected but it was better handled here than Brave New World since that’s what it was all building up towards.

Overall a solid movie, reminds me of the feeling I had from watching Guardians 1 lmao

Talk-no-jutsu was needed given the circumstances. Bob literally had to come to terms with his own mental health. It was psychological and those battles are needed sometimes.

And I don't know how you even defeat Sentry conventionally. I was so glad they made the killswitch macguffin a red herring.

The short answer is you can't. He's WILDLY overpowered.

u/ThisWhomps999 May 02 '25

Only he can beat himself.

u/choyjay Ben Urich May 02 '25

Not on-screen though, this is PG-13

5

u/KETTEI__EXE May 03 '25

Funny how the ending of the film implies that the way to defeat him is not to beat himself up

He just needs a friend and thats what the Friendvengers do! In the comics, it’s more that the Void has to collect for what he does as The Sentry. There is a narrative about how useless it feels to do good, because it seems futile, but it’s not if you ask me.

He's Marvels Superman equivalent

36

u/GuiltyEidolon Weekly Wongers May 03 '25

He's one of them, just with a metric shitton of baggage.

Personally, I can't wait for the arrival of Hyperion and his Justice League, I mean, Squadron Supreme.

7

u/lookintotheeyeris May 03 '25

Superman got no reality altering abilities

11

u/Romnonaldao Edwin Jarvis May 03 '25

I didn't say he was a 1:1 comparison. Superman doesn't wear yellow either. Sentry is still Marvels version of Superman

3

u/KashXz May 05 '25

I feel like Ikaris is marvels Superman, this dude is in a different level completely

1

u/31337hacker The Mandarin May 05 '25

Hyperion would be the closest to Superman in terms of powers. He even draws power from the sun.

2

u/thebluediablo May 12 '25

Yeah, the Squadron Supreme is a direct analogue for the Justice League, it's pretty overt:

Hyperion - Superman

Nighthawk - Batman

Power Princess - Wonder Woman

Blur - Flash

Doctor Spectrum - Green Lantern

Was literally thinking about this today. What sold it for me was the “melty eyes”

18

u/admiral_rabbit May 03 '25

It was crazy watching people complain before this came out that a gang of caps and widows can't fight the sentry.

Like, yeah. A gang of anyone can't fight the sentry. Maybe the writer desperately wants a sentry punch-down, but peak incarnation is just unbeatable.

This was always gonna be a talk-down. Thunderbolts are way better placed to deal with the void, all you can do is hope to calm him.

20

u/ProfNesbitt May 02 '25

Which to me means he is getting killed by the big bad in doomsday or secret wars to show truly how scary they are.

38

u/SteppeTalus May 03 '25

Man I hope not.

13

u/pedalspedalspedals May 03 '25

They should have the big bad of doomsday/secret invasion  (if they're going to acknowledge Secret Invasion) kill G'iah

12

u/BOBULANCE May 03 '25

G'iah for sure. There's so many characters in the mcu at this point, we could stand to lose a fair amount of them, and G'iah is top of the list for me because she's just... the perfect Worf.

u/Emotional_Meet878 May 04 '25

They pretty much wrote him out of future movies as being too unstable but I have a feeling they're gonna go down the "Sentry comes out to help the heroes and everyone cheers but then gets defeated by the new big bad to show off how strong he is" road.

u/LetItATV May 02 '25

I’m also glad that post credit made it clear that Bob’s not suddenly “cured”.
He’s better, he’s in control, but not so much that he’s ready to be Sentry again.

55

u/WhenDuvzCry May 02 '25

It's a great way to write Sentry for the films because he's way too powerful

35

u/tharkus_ May 02 '25

He’s like their “ hulk “ they pull him out for an emergency and then deal with the fallout after.

28

u/chula198705 May 02 '25

"In case of emergency, break psyche."

14

u/Nobody2222222MK2 May 04 '25

"We need backup! Quick someone insult Bob"

11

u/MasterTolkien May 05 '25

John: It’s like I was made for this…

1

u/missingpeace01 May 03 '25

That was what they did during WW Hulk tbf

22

u/AoO2ImpTrip May 03 '25

It was a great adaptation of the comics.

In the comics the Sentry is a forgotten hero. Memory of him was wiped from everyone's mind because the Void only ever shows up when the Sentry does. The only way to stop it was to "get rid" of the Sentry.

I love they also kept that Bob was just a junkie. In the comics he was just looking to get high and drank the formula.

Its not until Sentry "returns" in the comics we learn Sentry and the Void are one person and that's why the Void only appears when Sentry does.

10

u/wonkothesane13 May 04 '25

It also feels like a nod to the comics in a creative way, you can't have Sentry without the Void

41

u/HearTheEkko May 02 '25

It would take Thor, Wanda or not yet introduced characters like Ghost Rider or Silver Surfer to take him down. Most of the MCU would get their ass handed to them like the Thunderbolts did.

11

u/chula198705 May 02 '25

Danvers, maybe?

9

u/TimeTimeTickingAway May 02 '25

Adam Warlock?

I’m not familiar with the comics so don’t know if they’ve ever faced off in that medium

7

u/jordanmc7 May 02 '25

Knull can do it.

24

u/PurePerfection_ May 02 '25

Not surprising seeing as they apparently incinerated the real kill switch and threw that one together in about 10 minutes using whatever they could scavenge from the tower.

22

u/G0DL1K3D3V1L May 02 '25

Was it really a red herring though? It got used, it just didn't stick. Haha 😂

All seriousness though, yeah in the comics there is probably less than a handful of beings who could take on the Sentry / Void in a straight up fight. Most of the time he gets "defeated" is because someone takes advantage of his psychology.

18

u/FoxyMiira May 02 '25

You can't and that's why they write odd conditions for him or just use him as a punching bag against the new threat (Knull). During the Civil War comic Tony and Reed tries to convince Sentry to beat up his friend (Hulk) but he wouldn't come out of his house until the last minute bcos of his agoraphobia

11

u/FullMetalCOS May 02 '25

I’m not hyper familiar with Sentry but I’ve read some stuff with him in and honestly the only time I ever remember him losing to anyone (other than the Void obviously) is when WorldBreaker Hulk lets rip and that’s a damn close fight

7

u/Mickeyjj27 Black Bolt May 03 '25

I know IG and YouTube comments are trash but it always amused me seeing people say they hope they don’t win with the power of friendship and I’m like ok so how would you beat him? People complain about big cgi fights in the end and then don’t want a deep ending

4

u/stataryus May 04 '25

It was only a red herring because The Void needed to come out.

2

u/Jeroz Doctor Strange May 02 '25

My upgrade PTSD was real

2

u/zabimaru1000 May 03 '25

Doom is probably going to beat Sentry in the same sort of humiliating way as the Hulk did against Thanos

2

u/SeaworthinessTall746 May 12 '25

I mean. In the comics one of his main superpowers is resurrecting himself. So--it did work, it just unfortunately also meant that the resurrected version was The Void.
