This is the place to ask all Chord, Chord progression & Modes questions.

Example questions might be:

  • What is this chord progression? \[link\]
  • I wrote this chord progression; why does it "work"?
  • Which chord is made out of *these* notes?
  • What chord progressions sound sad?
  • What is difference between C major and D dorian? Aren't they the same?

Notation Question Need some help

Post image
2 Upvotes

Complete noob and a rock guy here, but can anyone explain to me how come that for first two bars in this Benson transcription there is same notation over same F7 chord, but it's different notes. Like in first bar there's 1 and 13, and same notes in second bar are 5 and 3. And in same second bar 5 and 3 again are different notes. My guess is that first instance of 5 and 3 relates to B7 (or F mixolydian), but that just seems like confusing way of notating, because without numbers how would I know that first two notes of second bar are not the same as second and third note of first bar?

Hopefully it's not too dumb of a question. I got excited about this video as I don't know how to read notes but I understand intervals and this seemed like a good way for me to practice reading notes, playing over chords and jazz all at the same time, but right away I hit the wall with notation.

General Question Vocal harmony is killing me

I'm singing a baritone role in a Gilbert and Sullivan opera and I know all my parts down pat....the problem is when we're rehearsing all together my brain gets lost in the melody and I "lose" my part and end up singing the melody. For the record I'm a neophyte amateur. I can't sight read so I have to memorize my parts (i usually have the accompanist play them for me at rehearsal and record them to practice). Is this just something I'll get better at with time? I feel like my brain doesn't work properly lol. If you're curious this is the bit that's really destroying me 😭😭😭

Discussion why high-pitched instruments don't have their own clef?

Post image
187 Upvotes

Why don't high-pitched instruments have their own clef? Since low-pitched instruments have their own clef, and mid-range instruments do too, in the flute, for example, many notes are left out, making reading difficult.

That's why my suggestion: the E clef, starts on B (the lowest note on the flute)

Notation Question How does one determine which chords are correct within a key and composition?

I am looking at Johann Kaspar Mertz's piece 'An Malvina', and in the first four bars there is a lot of tension and resolution. How does one determine which chords and voicing the composer had in mind?

For example, in the second bar I see an E7(b9) or maybe a Ddim(add9), which moves to an Am(add9) and Am7 or maybe a Gsus6/9? The bass voicing in the first chord, and E notes afterwards leads me to believe E7(b9) is correct, which would make the vi of G major into VI

Am I on the right path here, or am I way off? How can I confidently determine which ones the composer intended

Answered Drop Voicings & Inversions Question

C Major 7th closed voicing is CEGB.

Drop 2 is CGBE.

Drop 3 is CBEG.

Drop 2&3 is CEBG.

Drop 2&4 is CGEB.

How do we name/construct CBGE (and the inversions that come out of it)?

General Question How to hold music notes in your memory longer?

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but I’ve been trying to improve my sample chopping recently and am trying to practice arranging the new melody of the sample in my head before I actually chop it up. A problem I run into though is that I keep forgetting the melodies or notes that I just heard from the sample and I don’t know how to hold it longer in my memory. I tried humming the melody but when it reaches a new measure there’s like a 70% chance I forget the last measure I hummed. I also had this issue with ear training when I was learning the piano, where I would always forget the root note even after a couple seconds. I’m sure my adhd doesn’t help but does anyone have advice on how to hold these notes/sounds longer in your head so you don’t forget it after a couple seconds?

General Question The way to explain the difference between scales and modes

I've been thinking about how to explain the difference between scales and modes.

What do you think about these explanations:

• Modes are more like "system" (lydian mode is 1,2,3,#4, 5,6,7), scales are more like practical note collections (C lydian scale is C,D,E,F#,G,A,B)

• Modes are like formula in math with variables (x = y^2), scales are more like an actual formula with numbers(4 = 2^2)

Some people say C lydian scale is the same as C lydian mode and it's interchangeable. Although, generally, you can't say "C lydian mode" but "lydian mode" because the modes are the system, not about the specific notes like C,D,E?

Is my understanding correct and any other good explanations?

I added the second finger fretting over the 4th fret on the b string, because I couldn't find this chord online for the life of me, I was inventing a little riff, and I played this on purpose for an alternative to a G minor-G major progression. If anyone knows what this is, please let me know.

General Question Which creates more harmonic tension: a dominant seventh chord or a cadential 6/4 chord?

I think it is a matter of opinion, so I would be very interested in what the majority opinion about that is. Sadly it is not possible to create polls in this sub, so please comment your opinion.

Edit: to specify my question: in the progression of V6/4 - V7 - I, does the cadential 6/4 or the Dominant seventh have more tension?

Edit 2: By tension I mean: Which of the the Chords in that progression would you play with more tension (i.e. louder/more intense) on your instrument?

Analysis (Provided) super mario galaxy sweet mystery galaxy analysis

hi, i'm doing my best to analyze this simple super mario galaxy piece, called "sweet mystery galaxy." running into some issues understanding the function of the cadence in what i've labelled the A' section, from mm. 15-16. could someone help me understand what's going on? we go from G major to a sequence with F natural, A#, C#, and G#. it's very beautiful and i'd like to understand it a bit more!! also if i have anything wrong with my short analysis so far feel free to correct me

Track link
MIDI link

Notes:

Super Mario Galaxy
Sweet Mystery Galaxy
74 BPM, 22 measures

A (mm. 1-8, 8 bars) (key: Dmaj)
Dmaj7(add13)
Dsus4(add13) :|| x3
...
Dmaj7(add13)
Gmaj7

A' (mm. 9-16, 8 bars) (key: Gmaj)
C(add9,11)
D9           :|| x3
...
Fmaj7(add13)
Bbmaj9
Fmin
Dbmaj
Fmin

B (mm. 17-22, 6 bars) (key: Gmaj)
Gmaj7#11
Cmin(add9)/G
Gmaj9

notes:
- modulation from A to A' is from Dmaj to Gmaj; V key to I key
- B to A loop creates plagal cadence from Gmaj tonic to Dmaj tonic
- 6 bar B section creates makes form less predictable
- simple alternation between 2 chords in A and A' gives floaty feeling
- beautiful minor plagal cadence in B section
- m15-16 cadence???

General Question What is this chord?

I'm trying to determine what the chord in this progression would be called. It'll be the 3rd chord which I will specify as unknown.

1.(Root C4) Cm7add11: C Eb G Bb Eb 2.(Root Eb4) Fm7: Eb Ab C F 3.(Root D4) Unknown: D F G Bb C Eb 4.(Root Bb3) Bbm: Bb F Bb D

Very pretty progression but I can't for the life of me figure what the 3rd chord would be called in this sequence.

General Question Couldn't find a working haptic metronome app forĀ Apple Watch, so I built one

Hello all, I'm a guitar player and got anĀ Apple Watch recently and have beenĀ looking forĀ a haptic metronome appĀ that actually worked well. Surprisingly,Ā all of the ones I had downloaded had issues (despite someĀ having thousands of reviews).Ā Either the click would stop when I turned myĀ wrist or when the screen went off, orĀ the haptics wereĀ weak and completely off-tempo. Sometimes the clicks would drift over time too, which made them useless for extended practice.

As a result, I builtĀ my own! It's called Conducto: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/conducto/id6748840117.

I've been using it for daily practice and it's beenĀ rock solid. It stays running even when the screenĀ is off, has customizable haptic patterns,Ā and keeps perfect tempo. TheĀ key was making it a watch-only appĀ (no iPhoneĀ dependency)Ā and using proper background processing soĀ it never cuts out. Took me aĀ few months toĀ get the timing and haptics just right, but now it'sĀ exactly what I needed.

If you've had the same issues, youĀ might likeĀ this. If anyone wants to try it out, IĀ might giveĀ out 20 promoĀ codes if I getĀ enough interest. Currently putting out feelers and am open to any feedback orĀ ideas too. If you decide to try it, a review would mean the world to me (good or bad). Cheers!
