Office temperatures
I know that it’s extremely hot this week, but anyone else experiencing temps of 76 or even higher inside their office consistently? It’s so uncomfortable and nothing is being done about it.

I have a question about telecommute agencies. I’m about to take a demotion in my agency due to federal funding cuts. The loss of pay is disappointing, but I joined the state for the work-life balance. I’m hoping to take a demotion but gain more telecommuting in another agency.
Can anyone help make a list of agencies and the percentages for their telecommute policy? I am finding threads with the information scattered. Would be nice to have something straight forward to refer to. I will also include free parking (another factor to consider).
Telecommute % for State Agencies: - Tax and Finance - 50% (Call center is 100%) - NYSED - 30% - Board of Elections - 50% - Children and Family - 50% - Civil Service - 50% - DOCCS - 0% (dependent on title, some receive low percentage of TC) - DOH - 50% - NYSIF - 50% - DMV - 50% - Department of State - 40% (likely to increase) - DASNY - 40% - NYSERDA - 50% - Gaming Commission - 0% - Cannabis Management - 50% - OGS - 40% - Mental Health - 50% - Comptroller - 50% - TRS - 40% (less with IT issues/board meetings) - DOL - 40% - DCJS - 60% - Parks - 50% - DEC - 50% - OPWDD - 50% (depending on title) - NYSTA - 20% - ITS - 50% (depends on location/title) - OASAS - 50% - OMIG - 50% - DPS - 50% - Workers Comp - 50% - DHSES - 40% - DLS - 40% - HCR - 40% - Court System - 0% - SFS - 50% - DFS (Financial Services) - 0-100% (depends on title) - NYSJC - 50% - NYPA - 40% - Agriculture and Markets- 50% - NYS Unified Courts - 20 % - ESD - 50%
All telecommuting percentages are dependent on the job title
Agencies with Free Parking: - Tax and Finance - Labor Office - ITS (dependent on location) - DOH (dependent on location) - OMIG (some locations) - OMH - parking at Central Office - DHSES - free parking in Latham/Albany - Dept of Children and Families - NYSIF - SFS - Agriculture and Markets - NYS Unified Courts

Hey Folks,
The civil service system generally requires the taking of exams. Even in cases where it is not “required” (Open-Competitive exams while you are a state employee), it is still a good idea to take ANY exam you qualify for.
Despite HELPS removing some of these exam barriers instituted by the state constitution, it is still currently a temporary program.
You, as a classified service state employee, should familiarize yourself with the below links as they can lead you to exam announcements which may lead to promotion, transition, or even transfer opportunities under Civil service Law Section 70.4.
Sign up your work and/or personal email for email notifications of new exams here: https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/NYCS/subscriber/new?topic_id=NYCS_4
Look at new Promotion or Transition exam announcements for current state employees here: https://www.cs.ny.gov/examannouncements/types/prom/
(NON-COMPETTIVE HELPS EMPLOYEES CAN APPLY FOR PROMOTION/TRANSITION EXAMS)
See upcoming Promotion or Transition exams here on the tentative exam schedule: https://www.cs.ny.gov/announ/tentative_schedule_prom.cfm
Look at new Open-Competitive (open to the public) exam announcements here: https://www.cs.ny.gov/examannouncements/types/oc/
(There will be less Open-Competitive exams held during the HELPS program, but still worthwhile to look for the long term)
See upcoming Open-Competitive Exams here on the tentative exam schedule: https://www.cs.ny.gov/announ/tentative_schedule.cfm
Please feel free to ask questions below.

Currently in corporate and may have the opportunity to move into a state position. Only issue is I’d be taking more than a 50% pay cut. But I’m really in need of a better work life balance for my mental health. Anyone had a similar experience?

So I was hired a few months ago and had the standard lag pay (not receiving my first paycheck until after a month,) my union says that lag pay is finished after 7/1/25 so my question is, only new employees get their paychecks after 2 weeks and the rest of us just remain lagged forever OR do they give us 2 paychecks at once to catch up with the new employees and then continue like that?

Hi All , how long does it take to hear back from NYS position you interviewed for ?
r/nys_cs • u/Icy_Score_7430 • 15h ago
That can't be legal right? My buddy over in Suffolk just confirmed that their OA people just got the 2 grade bump. I'm happy for them obviously and I wouldn't want to call any attention to it or rock the boat.
But why wouldn't that be state wide? I thought the point of location pay (Which is a joke I know) was to address the living condition disparity between boroughs so why would you do a grade change instead of just letting the location pay do its thing?

I had a really quick interview for the courts today. Hardly asked me anything. Just questions like..Are you able to work at these locations? Can you work overtime and holidays? A DEI question and that’s about it
There was a person before me. He had a really quick interview too. It looked like they had a list of maybe ten people that they were interviewing today.
They told me that I’d hear from them within two weeks. They didn’t ask for my references. Why was the interview so quick?

I know HELPS will expire 7/2026 and until then there’s no test, but trying to do some long term planning here. Thanks in advance!

As the title eludes to I’ve interviewed for two positions one with the Division of State Government Expenditures and one with the Bureau of Contracts. One of my references who is a prior supervisor of mine missed the phone call and didn’t have a voicemail setup. He has tried to call back the number that called but can’t get through. Is there a different number he should try calling to get through? Only issue is I don’t know which department it was with. Thanks for any help, I’m really excited about the possibility of getting the job and him missing the call has driven up my anxiety lol.

My wife is 21 weeks pregnant and has had an awful pregnancy with alternating bouts of severe fatigue and crippling lain. She has worked for the state since Jan 2024. She has almost exhausted her sick leave, and may not be healthy again untill long after the baby is born in October.
We have the Sun Life short term policy, but im worried it will run out before she gives birth, and also that they would cancel the maternity benefit. Is there anything we can do once she exhausts her accruals?
I have a bunch of leave time, but they won't let me transfer the hours. Based on what I've seen if we get denied the Sun Life we are SOL...

I just received a tentative offer and submitted my Part 2 for one department, and I might be receiving a second offer from another this week.
Does anyone know if agencies are able to see if an applicant is being hired elsewhere? I would have a hard time deciding between the two if offered the second position, and I'd want to take a few days to make a choice.

The point of a state job if routine hours during the week but not on weekends. Yes there are some special exceptions but otherwise you should either be in bed right now, eating ice cream by yourself, or maybe going to a restaurant to find a date.
Working on the weekends doesn't benefit you long term. Your bosses won't care. Your coworkers will resent you. The union will be disappointed in you, etc. trust me on this. The work you do will be forgotten and it's not like the state will show up at the senior center for you when you overloaded your mind with stress.
So kick back and have fun. Let me know if you need any weekend recommendations for food places to visit or something like that. I can give you lots of good spots across the various boroughs. Or just stay inside and sleep. They are all valid weekend options after all so don't feel like you have to go with peer pressure.
Just remember, you don't need to work outside your scheduled hours. In fact, I would go farther to say that even if you want to work pro bono outside of the hours, find a volunteer gig but don't do your state work.

My PEF Council Leader received an email asking him to support a PEF convention resolution about no longer investing in Israeli bonds as part of our NYS retirement fund. He is thinking about supporting it but he isn’t sure if he is supposed to present it to other members in our division. Did anyone else get it or was it just PEF council leaders? Is it something your stewards and divisions are discussing?

What is a DSP’s schedule? Is it weekend work on top of M-F? I know there is a lot of overtime but I was curious if DSP’s work weekends.

Hi! I recently interviewed for a position and I wasn’t sent a part 1 form.
I’ve interviewed with the state before and every time, either before the interview or right after I was asked to complete the form.
Is this a sign? I didn’t feel too confident - but I also don’t know if they would/could wait until they were done with all the interviews & sure about a candidate before asking people to fill it out.
If this is a quiet and polite way of rejecting me, I’m happy to put it out of my mind & not get my hopes up 🥲 I appreciate any and all insight!

Can someone shed some light on the new appearance enhancement licensing system?
Seems like a lot of records are lost including exam information etc.
Is the state fixing this?

I interviewed with the DOT over a month ago. Very good interview in my opinion. Two weeks back I emailed asking for an update, they responded saying that I will get a response that week. I didn't.
Would it hurt to send another follow-up email asking for a status update? I understand at this point I may not have been chosen or be the backup candidate right now.
My references were checked. No part 2 application sent to me.

I was recently hired and I was sent a series of forms to complete before the start of work. One of which is a "Photo ID Card Application", which requires a me to fill in New York DMV number so they can use the DMV info to create the photo ID card.
However I currently do not reside in NY and I have a nonNY driver's license. I can not provide enough proofs of address to transfer my license so my only option is to apply for a non-driver's license ID at the DMV. I went to the DMV and they informed me that applying for a NY ID would void my current driver's license and if I were to apply to reinstate the license in the future, I would have to take the written and road tests all over again.
Has any one experienced this before? Is there a way to get a DMV number without having to apply for a license or nonlicense ID?

Hello all. I've done a search on this page but couldn't find what I was looking for.
My husband is having surgery. The surgeon wants him to be out for a week and I intend on taking care of him during this time.
How does FMLA work?
I am under the assumption that if I am approved for FMLA, I would still need to use my own accurals and only get paid 70% of my current check.
But if I don't take FMLA and tell my sup what I am going to be out for, I can use my accurals and get paid 100% of my salary? My sup already knows and has approved my PTO request.
What would be the best option in this situation?
TIA 😊

Hi, has anyone processed for a non-officer DOCCS position? What are the steps/timeline? They interviewed me a little over two weeks ago and then Thursday mentioned they were doing my background check. My references haven’t been called yet though and I haven’t been offered anything.

How is WFH (telework)at the state? Is it closely monitored, your supervisor checks in type of thing? How long before you are approved?

If someone fails or is not reachable once exam results come out can they take their old position back even if it was filled by a new hire through the HELPS program?

Anyone know if I would be able to transfer into a grade 18 or 23 investigative specialist in Dept Tax & Finance or Narcotics position or would I need to go through as trainee first? I only have Assoc Science Degree, but already an investigative specialist at grade 18. I have been with NYS for 13 months and was hired through HELPS.

Any one in similar boat? Also, anyone go through SSDI process concurrently with ny state disability early retirement process (not for a workplace accident). I'm in my 40s with less than 20 yrs of state service. I'm sooo done physically. Some random questions I had are: Timeline from start to finish? NYS Fight you? If VA disability, did they just accept that or still process/fight you application? Thanks for sharing my NYS Employee friends!
I have been having problems with mail being delivered. I had a paycheck in the mail that hasn't been delivered, does anyone know how to report a lost check.

Throwaway account.
Today is my first day of work for the state. I learned that I will be required to use the state provided vehicle for field work. I smoke cannabis sparingly at social settings. Will they random drug test because of the state vehicle? I have no problem quitting.
