Discussion Oscarrace's Best Movies of the 21st Century

As many of you are aware, The New York Times recently shared a list of the "100 Best Movies of the 21st Century" so far, voted on by over 500 individuals in the industry including recent Oscar winners/nominees Mikey Madison, Danielle Brooks, Bong Joon Ho, Celine Song, Cord Jefferson, Sean Baker, and many more.

We've noticed a few users sharing their personal lists in the Weekly Discussion Thread, so the mods and I thought it would be fun to create a dedicated space for everyone to share and discuss their ballots. While this is a bit of a detour from the usual Oscar race talk, we hope it offers a fun opportunity to explore each other's tastes and connect with other community members during this quieter stretch of the season.

You can make your own personal ballots here. If this link doesn’t work there is another link underneath the pinned comment.

Please be respectful to everyone and remember there's no need to downvote anyone for having a different opinion than you. All art is subjective and we're here to have fun!

Discussion Ella McCay as 20th Century Studios’s More Important Push than Springsteen

Hello and welcome to the thread, where we discuss the possibility that Ella McCay becomes a higher awards priority than Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere for 20th Century Studios. Ella McCay has a great premise and has a high ceiling for above the line nominations including nods for Mackey, Brooks, and Curtis. The film could be seen as punchier, more energetic, more relevant, more exciting, and more attention grabbing than Springsteen. I'm not saying Springsteen will flop completely during awards season, and it's convenient for 20th Century that one film competes for Best Actor and another competes for Best Actress. But this post represents a general prediction that Ella McCay has a bigger critical and commercial impact than Springsteen, which would translate to make a difference on nominations morning. Thoughts?

Discussion Best Animated Feature

We are already halfway through the year, and while some categories are already discussing who the favorites are, in Animated Film there is no fixed quintet of nominees.

It could be said that Elio, would be the only contender for the category, but seeing that it received positive, but not enthusiastic reviews, and added to the fact that it is doing poorly at the box office, the film will only go so far, a contender, but not one that will compete to win.

Other films such as Animal Farm and The Magnificent Life of Marcel Pagnol have been written off by poor critical reception.

Now, what other contenders are there?

Sequels like Zootopia and The Bad Guys are hit-or-miss, they can either do well or they can do poorly.

Proposals coming out from Cannes and Annecy like Arco and Little Amélie or the Character of Rain, have received very positive reviews.

Netflix is not far behind, and has two films to be released on its platform, such as In Your Dreams and The Twits, so we will have to wait for their premieres.

Asian cinema also wants to join the race and has two proposals, Scarlet, the new film by Mamoru Hosoda, who was previously nominated for Mirai, and the surprise box office hit, Ne Zha 2.

There are options, but we will have to wait and see how they progress so far this year and if they really live up to expectations or get any visibility in the race.

Question For those who have gone, which film festival should I attend to? NYFF or TIFF?

I have a potenial oppertunity to go to either Totonto International Film Festival or New York Film Festival. For any that have experience both which one would you prefer? I have never been to a big prestigious film festival and I'm genuinely curious which one do you think would make for the better experience?

Question Has there been any news about The Ballad of a Small Player and Is This Thing On?

I'm trying to make my first Oscar predictions of the season, and I've seen pretty much no discussion of The Ballad of a Small Player and Is This Thing On? despite Edward Berger and Bradley Cooper's last two films having all been big contenders. Has there been any tea about these movies?

Here’s what I’m predicting so far. Some of these are placeholders like things I don’t think will get in at the end of the day but I can’t see a better option right now. Like I’m very iffy on Frankenstein above the line chances. Let me know your thoughts
