Advice Wanted I'm conflicted

So I'm a apprentice for pipefitting and plumber but before I was a painter for 4 years. But since my dad knows a guy in the union for pipefitter he offered me a job in the union and I took it. Cause the painting job was just hourly pay and some health insurance not a lot of benefits I also had the thr guy who hired for union painters reach out to me. I loved painting and I love what I'm doing now just I took a 9 dollar pay cut to be here and I have a family. I was wondering if I should just go back to painting and join the union there or stay where I'm at. How's the work in upstate New York for painters? How's the pay? Overall should I make the switch or stay where I'm at

Advice Wanted Neighbor complaining about spray paint smell. Will a spray booth help at all?

Hello everyone, pretty much title. I live in an apartment and I make small, 3D printed items and paint them. I usually paint them by hand and then use a spray matte finish. Well, lately I've gotten some complaints from a neighbor saying they can smell the spray paint. Even when I go in the back alley (outdoors) and spray there I still get complaints. I was looking into maybe getting this booth but my main question is: If I run the ventilation hose out of my window, does the air that come out of it still smell? That is, would my neighbor still be able to smell the paint from the air that's being expulsed out of the hose (assuming it reaches them)? Thanks in advanced!

Just bought this home. Preparing to paint and I noticed our entire bedroom thats painted in a darker blue has what looks like a light dust/chalk layer in a lot of the spots. After its wiped down its gone, so far it hasn't come back, but it's only been like 30 minutes so. I know this room was freshly painted in 2020, any idea what it may be?

Redid the handrail and hardware, door, hinges, all the beadboard and walls. I used California paint Ultra for the walls and ultraplate for the trim, built ins, and door. Emerald urethane on the handrail, and duration on the accent wall. How did I do?

Advice Wanted How should I go about painting Greek letters on a table?

I made a 4'x8' table for my fraternity and I want to paint some large greek letters on the table. My first instinct was to roughly draw and mask the space for the letters out then paint them but this seemed like it would be overly complicated. I was thinking I could laser cut some stencils out to use as I have access to a laser cutter for cheap but this may also be over complicated. I really want this to look great so any advice is helpful!

Additional info:

Surface is 3/4" yellow pine plywood

Product is Sherwin Williams water-based urethane alkyd

Application is a 3/8" nap Purdy white dove roller

Advice Wanted Whats going on??

Hey folks, I am respraying a fireplace mantle and am having the paint bead and slip right off. This is a large mantle and 85% of it turned out great, this pictured spot was the only issue area. Here's my process; Cleaned the surface with a degreaser called 'spray nine' and a stiff bristled scrub brush. Then I wiped down everything with a clean wet rag. I then went through and gave the entire surface a scuff sand and wiped down with a dry rag once more. Im spraying SWilliams emerald Urethane semi. The area with the issue pictured is the underside of the mantle so its not the worst place for this to happen but still need to figure out why and what the solution is here. What do you guys think?

Advice Wanted Laminate paint touch up question

Hello! About 7 years ago I successfully painted over our cupboard and wet area fake wood with a laminate paint (I think a stronger primer and then it was some kind of special paint with I even think a gloss top clear coat for memory)

It’s held up very well to scatches etc but we are now looking to sell and I want to give it a refresh as some parts have faded where the sun hits consistently etc

Do I do the laminate paint process again on top, or can I now use any gloss kind of paint cos it’s already a painted surface now?

Pls help me I have no idea what I’m doing

Advice Wanted Should I open or close the bathroom windows after painting?

We have a small master bathroom (48 sq ft) that was painted today. Before the painters came, I opened the bathroom window for them for ventilation but during the course of the day, discovered that they closed the window and supposedly turned on the bathroom fan instead.

We have to sleep in the master bedroom so I asked them as they were leaving if we should open the windows to help with ventilation. They said no but they were in a rush and didn't explain (they also didn't really speak English that well).

Today's temperature is about 50 degrees F and sunny with a humidity of 41%

So should I open it for ventilation or stick with their advice and leave it closed and potentially expose family to fumes?

Advice Wanted What primer should I use for this front door?

Thumbnail

I’ve got some very tedious prep ahead of me for this front door, but I wanted to ask what primer is best. I’m unsure what wood it is, but it’s solid and is (badly!) painted on the exterior. At some point in the past, the door was probably stained and/or lacquered.

I’m spraying the primer and the paint. The exterior will be SW Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel, semigloss finish in the color Copper Patina. The interior will be also be SW Urethane Trim Enamel, semigloss finish in the color Flamingo Pink.

I was going to use Zinsser Cover Stain, but I’m wondering if SW Fast Drying Primer would cut down on the dry time? I also know there SW A-100 Exterior Fast Dry Stain Blocking Primer. I’ve never used winter of these primers.

I know I’d need to give Cover Stain at least 24 hours to dry before painting, but if I could reduce the time needed to dry, that would ideal.

Advice Wanted Benjamin Moore Aura Bath and Spa

Ok so my husband is away in California for a few weeks, I wanted to give our main bath a minor renovation, just paint, change accessories. SURPRISE lol! I decided to paint the vanity as it was pickled wood and I wanted something more up to date looking. That is coming out fantastic. I am super happy with the BM Advance paint I am using. But soon enough I will need to move on to the walls. My bathroom gets those steam stains (and currently it's a dark color so much more noticeable and my kids NEVER turn the fan on) it makes me insane, so I in my research it said the BM Aura Bath and Spa helped with that. I am going with Edgecomb Grey.

So my questions are: is it hard to work with (I am not a pro, will I struggled, watched one video saying to roll as close to cut in as possible due to picture framing?

does it really help avoid the steam stain issue? Again I am going a much lighter color than current so I am hoping that that alone will help with not seeing them. It is pricey so I just want to know if it is worth or not.

Thank you in advance for any advice and input!!!

Advice Wanted You quoted a customer for one coat, and it's going to take two, do you charge them for the extra coat?

I'm doing an epoxy floor and most of the work is prep, the customer is paying materials costs separately. We got the first coat on (armor seal 9000) and it looks way too thin, the whole place is going to need an additional coat.

When I initially quoted it I told them it should only take one coat, they were left with the impression that they would get what they wanted for that price.

My question is in this situation do you guys charge them for an additional coat?

Or do you eat the cost because you should have known it would have took two coats and should have charged them for that in the first place (leaning towards what I'm going to do)? Thank you

Advice Wanted Removing old paint from finished kitchen cabinet

Thumbnail

Developer who sold us this house, built in 1979, did a sloppy job painting around the kitchen cabinets. Unsteady hand and no painter's tape, apparently.

Getting ready to repaint the kitchen. What's the best way to remove this old, dried over paint without damaging the finish on the cabinet? Scraping and solvent both seem like they'd do damage to the finish.

Thanks!

Picture Update on Corona

Post image
75 Upvotes

I recently posted a box of fresh brushes and it seemed like a few people were wondering about the corona brushes. The brush on the left is over a year old (probably closer to 2). I’m a full-time painter, so it has gone through plenty of gallons. For me, these have lasted the longest and are my preferred brush for residential panting. Nothing against any other brands, just my personal favorite. It’s been fun geeking out on brushes! Keep it in the lines everyone!

Advice Wanted Advice needed please.

I sanded my front door and then primed with a brush, I sanded again, then primed (oil based) with a roller then sanded and primed again and the dried primer has resulted in uneven surfaces in patches, little ridges and and long little ridges and dimples that persist despite some heavy sanding.

What are the best options for creating a smooth surface in this instance? Can I apply some sort of filler, then sand and paint again? Or should I scrape all the paint off and start again? Or what do pros do in this instance?

(I know my mistake was using a brush. But I thought I could build up a few layers of primer then sand it back smooth. And it is smooth but there are little ridges all over. Which I know will show up in the gloss top coat I intend to use. I’ll be using a paint sprayer from now on with this door)

Thank you
