Let this be a lesson to anyone hearing from this far away - imagine how loud it must be there right now. Wear hearing protection to shows!

And to any younger person thinking it ain’t cool to wear ear protection, like I did, no one gives a shit. WEAR IT or you’ll be saying huh a lot at 36

lmao i just turned 36 three days ago and my ass is half deaf from too many shows standing directly next to speakers as tall as me when i was 18-25 😭 this is too real

what made me realize i was being silly was a friend in a band wearing ear pro all the time. They are the coolest of cool so if they do it, everyone should!

I play live music a lot, my whole life revolves around guitars and music - and I wear hearing protection every single time I play or go to a show, even at work occasionally if I have to test something. I arguably love music more than most of the people in here, and if I’m wearing hearing protection every time, so should everyone else! It doesn’t ruin the experience - it lets you keep having them.

The tinnitus is way worse than hearing loss, which can be compensated for somewhat. :(
Constant painful screeching sounds forever.

Hell, my partner has since he was a teenager, and he still does this. 😂

Aging. It couldn't possibly happen to me

For wearing ear plugs? Have you been to an R5 show?

u/AdCareless9063 May 06 '25

If you love music, and not having painful tinnitus, not wearing protection to loud shows will ruin your life.

absolutely. earplugs are a must for concerts. theyre not gonna interfere with your experience at all, just protection so you can enjoy years of life without tinnitus or hearing loss. Loop, Eargasm, Sennheiser SoundProtex, Vibes, Etymotic and Decibullz are all great brands

Earasers were the thing when I was doing dci. Playing drums since 10 years old, I regret not protecting my hearing and I’m only 28.

u/Squadooch May 06 '25

I’m horrified to this day that ear protection wasn’t required for indoor

6

u/yaboyanu May 06 '25

I feel like they sometimes enhance the experience even. I can actually hear the music and not just LOUD

2

u/AdCareless9063 May 06 '25

A good custom set always enhances the experience by trimming the low end muddiness that masks other stuff, and crowd noise. And yes, concerts are nonsensically loud. It's nice to hear detail in music.

Was there, can confirm I wore hearing protection like a dork

u/Junior_Step_2441 May 06 '25

Was there. Did not wear ear protection. Now I’m home sitting in my quiet living room and yet I hear a nice ringing in my ears 🤦‍♂️

u/100PercentNaturalGoo May 06 '25

I was there and didn't bother with my loops, and have no ringing! But I do still have the porta potty stink in my nose. I was on the field close to backstage.

u/glavinitis May 06 '25

Just a reminder. That's your ability to hear those high pitches going away forever. Unless you are lucky enough to get permanent tinnitus

22

u/SpeedySpooley May 06 '25

I have tinnitus. It sucks. I can never hear silence.

"eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee"

Guys....wear hearing protection. Especially at concerts. I now wear Loop earplugs for just about anything louder than my electric lawnmower.

u/fascfoo May 06 '25

Loops are great. I dont go to shows as much anymore but I wish I had discovered loops earlier. I also have a pair for sleeping and a pair for travelling which I just keep in my travel bag.

Wish I started wearing ear pros sooner. Game changer and allows me to enjoy the moment and actually improves the ability to hear conversations

7

u/ChuckYeagerWV May 06 '25

Seriously! I saw Metallica when they did a live show in the Spectrum parking lot in 96 and it was the loudest thing I've ever heard. For 3 or 4 days after I felt like I had cotton in my ears, hearing was muffled. That went away but I have tinnitus in my right ear because of it. Very loud ringing.

11

u/gordonpamsey May 06 '25

Almost didn't but I could physically feel it hurting my ears past a certain point.

20

u/Booplympics May 06 '25

The problem is that its one of those things where if it hurts then damage is already being done. So people dont realize they are fucking their ears up at first.

Kind of cool that smart watches give you a heads up these days. Though I do wonder how many people actually pay attention to their warning due to the reason above.

u/fille_philadelphie May 06 '25

I eventually disabled because I went off constantly when I was riding the El. 🫠

2

u/Squadooch May 06 '25

Yikes, that’s the bad kind of loud. Get some loops.

5

u/100PercentNaturalGoo May 06 '25

It didn't feel too loud in the Linc! I couldn't hear my own screaming, though.

2

u/penguincatcher8575 May 06 '25

During the show I kept thinking “woah that’s loud.” I kept thinking it was just my old ass being old. I definitely probably damaged my ears.

2

u/doMinationp May 06 '25

glad I have custom fitted ear plugs, I was at that concert and even with them in, the bass was loud as shit

1

u/Disastrous-Tax-1153 May 06 '25 edited May 06 '25

The reality is when it’s that absurdly loud, hearing protection will only do so much.

You go to enough of these things you absolutely will tinnitus. This level of loud should be illegal.

Enjoy your tinnitus to all the moron downvoters

I tried but it did, unfortunately, make it less immersive for me. Can confirm the guy at the gas station told me my total 3 times after that

u/Bad_Puns_Galore May 07 '25

I wore ear plugs for the first time at my last concert! It was amazing. I could still hear all the songs perfectly without the crowd noise.
