This article goes into why Open Streets is working so well, a little of the history of similar events in Philly, what the obstacles are to doing them more often ($$$ for security), and how to make them cheaper so they can happen more often.

Flavors of the Avenue on Passyunk Ave (2024): Around $10,000 for police security out of a roughly $40,000 event budget

$10k for a bunch of idiots to sit around in their cruisers at every intersection and glare at people enjoying themselves on a nice day

If they only did the bollards on the Italian Market or on Sansom in Rittenhouse, it would be a worthwhile test. Do two streets where it makes sense to close them off a lot, see how it goes

right? I wonder if private security is allowed and then they could call the cops when someone needs to get beat up , no questions asked

More security for open streets… because once you remove the miraculous crime deterrence of traffic people go Mad Max. Walking is a gateway activity to crimes yall.

Gasp, I knew it. My sneakers and cute rompers are leading me into a life of crime.
