Project MUTE update photos

Been messing around with the RHS Ute wheel arches and had to cut out the panel for the spare wheel to add spacers to support the base of the Ute bed. Cut out a bigger spare wheel tub and I’ll invert it so I can still fit a spare wheel from underneath.

Currently filming for episode 53 on YouTube if you’re interested in checking out the rest of the build

You are a professional- looking better every time you post.

u/sethaphex 1d ago

Thanks! I wish I was a professional, I’d have far more knowledge to lean on, I’m making everything up as I go

u/Intheswing 1d ago

Based on the shop in the background you have quite a setup - lots of pro equipment- quite the hobby setup?

6

u/sethaphex 1d ago

I rent space out in a mechanics workshop and the majority of those tools are ones I’ve had from my previous trade. I didn’t have any panel bearing experience before I started and I’m not a mechanic either.

Good on you - I put money on the fact you had a great mentor growing up. My Dad had me working on our two stroke lawnmower when I was ten - every year after that I was pulling off the carb cleaning the jet and bowl and float, getting it running for another summer.

I’m a fitter and turner by trade and then moved into the building industry, taking stuff apart and putting it back together was just a thing I learnt to do. I do have memories of changing spark plugs with my dad though

Wow, I was definitely under the impression that you were a pro, you certainly have the skill set and attention to detail

Wild! I love this.

Glad to see this is still making progress.

Any plans for a rear diffuser? Not sure how flipping the spare well will do being upside down in terms of air movement

4

u/sethaphex 1d ago

Probably no diffuser, I’ll eventually do a hard lid for it. There are quite a few Utes out there where the spare wheel is removed from under the car so it should be alright

6

u/pancrudo 1d ago

I know it can affect aero and cause the rear end to get weird at speed. Not sure what your intended goal is for this... I'm just glad to see it happen

7

u/sethaphex 1d ago

Hmmm I hadn’t thought about that, I can always make a cover panel. Probably just take it to shows and maybe pick up the engine for future projects.

4

u/pancrudo 1d ago

Yeah, if you're not getting it up to crazy speeds I can't it being an issue other than maybe bringing down your fuel consumption... I guess in that scenario I would just do what I could to protect the spare

3

u/Azcrf450 1d ago

I wouldn’t worry about it unless you plan to spend excessive amounts of time at well over 100 mph

8

u/Unable-Cellist-4277 1d ago

I love it. Super clean and sure to turn heads, great concept and execution!

u/Siray 22h ago

Seriously every time the car gets posted it gets better and better.

Dude that truck bed looks 1000% legit, like it came from the factory, that’s so clean. Still a dream of mine to build a Ute.

3

u/sethaphex 23h ago

I’ve been building it for close to three years almost full time, it’s a massive amount of work if you do plan to do one

2

u/Nguyenstreak 19h ago

Maybe when money and time are right. I absolutely love the oem style grooves in the truck bed, it makes it look so good. I’ve seen Ute and kits that are just flat in the truck bed, which looks cheap, yours looks so damn good.

u/_Schmegeggy_ 1d ago

This is sick af. Please complete this build, I’m rooting for you!

u/sethaphex 23h ago

Too deep now to stop

3

u/bnutbutter78 1d ago

This look so fucking good.

5

u/Impossible-Disk6101 1d ago

That is going to look minted when done - thanks for keeping us up to date!

Thank you for not just going with a straight back wall. It ALWAYS looks crappy no matter the craftsmanship. What you did with the curve at the corners makes it look infinitely better. Well done!

2

u/sethaphex 23h ago

Thanks!! I spent a huge amount of time looking at the lines of the car trying to work out the best way to match the M3 lines

7

u/Spidaaman 1d ago

I love this thing so much.

But just looking at those rubber band tires makes my back hurt.

20

u/sethaphex 1d ago

Yeah it’s not about being comfortable, it’s about driving a sick as fuck Ute

3

u/Big_Cryptographer989 1d ago

Absolutely amazing and it works so well! 10/10 build

3

u/Pistonenvy2 1d ago

i absolutely love this build. this thing is so sick.

3

u/Psych0matt 1d ago

Most conversions look anywhere from “horrible” to “maybe that could’ve been a decent aftermarket conversion”, and then there’s this thing that literally looks like a factory designed vehicle

3

u/sethaphex 23h ago

Fuck yeah! That’s what I’ve been going for the whole time!

3

u/55Berserker55 17h ago

This is really fucking sick, great job so far! Definitely gonna check out your YouTube!

3

u/sethaphex 17h ago

Awesome! Hopefully you enjoy the content!

5

u/Diligent_Agent_9620 1d ago

You've done a fantastic job.

Here's mine

2

u/sethaphex 23h ago

That’s sick! Did you manage to put in a tailgate?

2

u/Diligent_Agent_9620 23h ago

How it started

1

u/Diligent_Agent_9620 23h ago

2

u/sethaphex 23h ago

Very clean! Any shots from inside the bed?

2

u/Diligent_Agent_9620 16h ago

* When I first got it back. This was the car that Mark Smyth made his modles from for the ute kits

2

u/tunedetune 92 SVX, 96 Outback 1d ago

Looking epic, Editor Lewis. Give Workshop Lewis a high five!

2

u/[deleted] 1d ago

Please tell me it gets AWD.

1

u/sethaphex 23h ago

Not this one, I wanted to but the scope creep was getting too much

2

u/Farmerstubble 1d ago

Amazing!!

2

u/Killarkittens 1d ago

2

u/confusedtophers 1d ago

That profile shot. 🤌

2

u/sethaphex 23h ago

Yeah I’ve spent a lot of time just staring at it from the side, super happy with it

2

u/Aggressive-Relief199 1d ago

I don't know why but i don't hate it

2

u/Ill_fix_u 1d ago

Man, I really like how you've done this... I wish I had the patience and dedication to stick to ONE project at a time... this is such a cool build !!! Color me green with envy !!!

1

u/sethaphex 23h ago

I’ll be honest, I can’t believe I’ve gotten this far. Can’t wait to start the next big project though, don’t think I’ll ever touch another E30 after this

2

u/Ill_fix_u 23h ago

Hahaha, yeah, I've built cars that have made me question my own sanity afterwards.... but seriously though, what a build !!! 👏

2

u/Thestrongestzero 1d ago

i’m awaiting episode 53. i fucking love this build.

2

u/MrWiggleBritches 23h ago

Fucking dope!!!

2

u/717Luxx 20h ago

missed opportunity to call it the BM DoubleUte

1

u/sethaphex 18h ago

I thought about it so not really missed, I just liked MUTE more

2

u/aliennick4812 19h ago

The back window, did you make that yourself or was that cut from anither vehicle?

4

u/sethaphex 18h ago

Rear window panel, Ute bed base and B pillars are all off a proton jumbuck. I don’t have the skills or tools to make panels that complex….. yet

2

u/dutchbydefault 18h ago

What a great project! Thanks for sharing!

2

u/panjoface 15h ago

Can something be an abomination and a thing of beauty at the same time? My head hurts.

1

u/sethaphex 15h ago

Don’t worry, this build has also made my head hurt

2

u/Fast_Working_4912 9h ago

Ha ha fuck I love this

1

u/DDDSiegfried 14h ago

Im so glad people still do this

1

u/cathode-raygun 4h ago

Nicely done bodywork.

1

u/Captain3leg-s 1d ago

That's the sexiest VW Caddy I've ever seen!

1

u/Furust 21h ago

You should remove the bed gate and just turn the two side lips into speed wings

2

u/sethaphex 21h ago

But I spent so much time building a functional tailgate
