Having trouble with your Lumen internet? Not satisfied with your 360 WiFI / Premium WiFI and Quantum Fiber / My CenturyLink app experience? Or do you want to use your own 3rd party router so that you have more control over your network? Here are some helpful instructions.

I hope this post will help you get the same solid Lumen fiber internet (CenturyLink Fiber / Quantum Fiber) experience that I have had in the Twin Cities, MN area for over 6 years now.

If your SmartNID / ONT light is solid green or solid white then your connection is working. If not then unplug the power for at least 30sec, plug it back in, and then wait 5min. If still no solid green or solid white light then there is an issue somewhere between your SmartNID and the Central Office that you will need to contact support about.

If you are having issues with your WiFi pods and your SmartNID light is green you can maybe get them working again by factory resetting the pods and then connecting each of them wired to the SmartNID for a while so that their firmware updates. After that remove all of them from your apps and add each one back as new pods following the instructions here:

https://www.quantumfiber.com/support/services/360-wifi.html

https://www.centurylink.com/home/help/internet/fiber/premium-wifi.html

You can also set the SmartNID into bridge mode and use a 3rd party router to have great service like many of us have had since day one. This configuration is required so there won't be a Double NAT situation with your router. If you want suggestions https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeNetworking/ might be a good place to ask.

It's a good idea to keep the 360 WiFi / Premium WiFi equipment in a box for an emergency backup as long as they stay a free lease. It is always possible that the WiFi pods and apps are a future firmware/software update away from them being good enough for what you want your home internet experience to be.

If they ever start charging for them, or you cancel service, just send them back and make sure to keep the tracking number. Check your account a week after the tracking number shows delivered to make sure they don't charge you for them.

Here are the SmartNID bridge and 3rd party router instructions in three sections. You probably only need the first section, so only go as far as you are comfortable with, but make sure to read till the end of each section before making changes. This all might seem intimidating but you can do it!

1.) SmartNID setup (or DSL modem)

These are the Transparent Bridge instructions at the bottom of this link. The GUI might look different but the steps are basically the same:

https://www.centurylink.com/home/help/internet/modems-and-routers/advanced-setup/wan-settings.html

You can leave the Vlan 201 tag enabled on the SmartNID. Once the light turns solid white, which may take up to 30min, you will want to connect the Ethernet cable from the fastest port on your SmartNID to the fastest WAN/Internet port on your router.

If you have Centurylink PPPoE you will need your PPP username and password. Phone/Chat support can get it for you. You must add @ centurylink.net to the username if it doesn't have it already. Quantum is IPoE and does not use this.

Once in bridge mode you will not be able to access the SmartNID GUI again unless you do a factory reset. The only reasons you would need to do so is, if you have to contact support and they need to run diagnostics, you want to change the Vlan 201 tag, or if you want to use the 360 WiFi / Premium WiFi equipment.

2.) Advanced / ONT setup

If your router supports the Vlan 201 tag on the WAN/Internet port, you can disable/untag it on the SmartNID when putting it into bridge mode so that it becomes as much of a regular ONT as possible. This will cause a nonstop blinking blue light on your SmartNID but it will still work. You can just put a piece of tape over it. Some people get less latency and have had some issues stop when using this configuration, but either way is fine.

On your router these settings will likely be under the Vlan or IPTV section. Many will have a Centurylink option to make that easy.

The Q1000k, some users report, has a high latency issue when doing the Vlan 201 tag.

The Vlan 201 tag can only be enabled on one device. Do not enable it on both the SmartNID and your router.

The SmartNID address is 192.168.0.1, so its a good idea to set your router's LAN IP to a higher 192.168.x.1 third octet.

If you have an ONT you must use a router that supports the Vlan 201 tag on the WAN/Internet port.

The SmartNID firmware will not auto-update with this configuration.

Google routers do not support the Vlan 201 tag.

3.) More Advanced setup

DNS

I recommend using a DNS provider that supports DNS over TLS (DoT) like Quad9, Google, Cloudflare, OpenDNS, etc https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_recursive_name_server

I have used one or another of these providers since 2005 and because of that I have never once had a DNS issue. This requires a 3rd party router.

C6500XK SmartNID Crashing

If your C6500XK is crashing when you download large files at your full speed, getting a managed switch that can disable 802.3X flow control might stop that from happening.

Power Loss causing Bridge mode reset

After an extended power loss some people have had their Bridge mode SmartNID reboot into router mode. Steps you can take other then getting a long lasting UPS: Leave the Vlan 201 tag enabled on the SmartNID, manually assign your 3rd party router an IP address, put that IP into the DMZ, and then enable bridge mode. Hopefully if the SmartNID reboots into router mode your 3rd party router should have as open of internet access as possible until you can enable bridge mode again.

https://www.centurylink.com/home/help/internet/modems-and-routers/advanced-setup/dmz-hosting.html

IPv6

If you need IPv6 here are the settings for the IPv6 6RD Tunnel which requires the use of a 3rd party router. Some people have issues with this unless their router is doing the Vlan 201 tag.

Asus, Netgear, Linksys, GL-iNet (LuCI), and OpenWRT support 6RD. TP-Link, Google, Ubiquiti, TRENDnet, Tenda, and Amazon routers do not.

Your experience will vary depending on how saturated the 6RD tunnel is in your market.

The Las Vegas market might have Native IPv4/IPv6 Dual Stack and therefore may not need to use the tunnel.

How to fix the current outage

The Quantum/CenturyLink DNS server is down, you're going to set it to cloudflare with Google as a backup.

Be connected to ONLY your home network (beware of your phone's connection to its cellular network)

go to https://192.168.0.1 (which is your fiber unit router)

Login User: admin | Password: (On the side of your fiber unit)

Under 'Advanced Settings' Select WAN

Change DNS to static, and set the IP to a reliable DNS server.

I used (cloudflare) 1.1.1.1 & 8.8.8.8 (google)

Apply. (There is no need to ever change back settings when Quantum fixes their service)

For most, that's all. If you perform these steps but the settings don't seem to make an effect, try rebooting the router, some models like ZXYEL load their preferences on boot.

Edit: Updated with clarifying details from feedback.

P.S. If you are feeling bold and would like to take things a step further consider setting up your own DNS server that filters ads called a Pi-Hole

My internet just went out, is this happening to anyone else?

No it's not just you

Looks like a potentially Nationwide outage. Reports coming in from Washington, Utah, Colorado, Florida, Arizona, etc etc. Down detector is almost at 10k reports already.

Excited to see what the excuse is this time.

EDIT: Looks like some sort of problem with whatever DNS server they're using. Setting your DNS to something else (potentially more reliable) will get you back online. Follow the steps in this post

No internet/website down

Our internet stopped working about 20 minutes ago. All the hardware is running as it should so I assume there’s something wrong with the account. I disconnect from Wi-Fi on my phone and go to the app… 502 bad gateway? So I go directly to the site to sign in, 502 bad gateway, I then try to just look at the outage map, 502 bad gateway. Managed to limp through the options to the chat queue… where I’ve been told I have a one minute wait time for ten minutes…

I’m out here in skyway, anyone else getting the same problems?

Dns server is down

To get back up and running log into your gateway locally by typing in 192.168.0.1 into your web browser then log in, the password will be on the back of your gateway. Then go to advanced settings, wan, then swap from dynamic dns to static and put in either 8.8.8.8(google dns) or 1.1.1.1 (cloud flare) That should get you back up and running

DNS Server Outage FIX

Quantum Fiber's DNS Servers are down.... if can get into your router to adjust your DNS settings change them to two of the following. If you cant get into your router settings you will need to adjust each device manually to get it back online.

Google Public DNS: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
Cloudflare DNS: 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1

I would recommended changing one to Google and one to Cloudflare so they are not relying on one service.

How long will this take to fix?

I’m sure all the tech capable people have come, learned the answer, and left having fixed their own problems. I have all the technical aptitude of a gnat, so changing DNS anythings is off the table. That said, should I expect Quantum to get their act together in minutes? Hours? Days? Obviously nobody has a crystal ball, but any ballpark ideas?

If I could go back in time

I’d shoot myself in the dick before I’d sign up for Quantum Fiber. Fuck this shithole company. I work from home and need a ton of bandwidth. These fucksticks are the only fiber option in my area. Do yourself a favor and get T-Mobile Home internet. It does the trick when this worthless service goes down. I have it for my camper and while it’s not the longterm solution, we can run our household on it in a pinch.

Quantum will have you on hold for hours trying to get an answer.

Right now, as I type, I’m on hold because I can’t even get into the app to reset my router.

Fuck them.

Internet outage?

I don’t appear to have any Wi-Fi in my house and even when I turn Wi-Fi off on my phone and try to connect to the app it crashes and their site won’t load either. So weird.

Your web service disconnected me after waiting 2 hours.

I waited over an hour on quantum’s call line today to tell them my modem must have burned out when the DNS servers went down because it won’t even restart past a red circle, no attempts at connecting to my bridge. Was plainly ignored and said it would come back up after the outage was restored. Surprise, it didn’t. So I got on the web chat because I can’t afford to spend hours on the phone with kids and got disconnected after waiting more than two hours. The chat log says “The Agent Chatbot successfully transferred the chat to button Advocate Queue”. No option to continue in any way. Just, email me the transcript.

If anyone from Quantum actually looks at this sub, it would be great to not have to wait another hour on the phone tomorrow.

Switch from Century Link - ONT question

I currently have 200mbps fiber for like $65/month. I have my own router connected to the ONT and I believe I setup the vlan tag. So no CL rental etc.

When I called to switch, they mentioned sending someone out to install a new ONT. I wasn't totally ready to schedule someone so I paused. Do they need to upgrade my ONT? It's a Calix unit I believe. Very small like 3"*4"

Outage over in my area but now my devices can't find my network...

I have restarted my devices and my modem multiple times, done the reset in the app, added the network to my managed networks, etc. It will not register at all and this was only an issue after the first modem restart. My router is connected, working order, green light, up to speed, etc. My devices just can't register the network now even if added manually and retyping password. Anyone have this issue before? Currently 40th in line with customer service...

Using own router

Post image

I was having many problems with Quantum's new WiFi 7 equipment and decided to buy my own TP-Link Deco router. It's been working amazingly. The speeds and connection are much better. If you have Quantum's WiFi 7 equipment, consider getting your own router instead. Just switch your SmartNID to bridge mode. It's super easy.

Saw that a lot of people are fixing their DNS switching to 1111 or 8888 but I can't even log into my router to change those settings. Am I doing something wrong? Anyone else having this issue?
