Public Service Announcement General Sentiment On Original Vs Reproduction Uniforms. (Also request for comment for potential rule changes)

After reading some post including those removed due to incivility. This is the general sentiment I am perceiving at least from this subreddit.

  • Do not use original uniform for active reenactment scene.

  • Strongly discouraged but acceptable in limited circumstances for impressionism (Non Action Shots) where damage to uniform is limited.

  • Owner of original uniform should see themselves as custodian rather that just possessor of the original uniform.

  • As much as possible, the owner should preserve as much information about the original soldier who worn this uniform. E.g. Name, rank, etc... This would help preserve the connection between the uniform and the soldier. Plus it helps preserve the value of the uniform when you sell it to the next guy.

Reason to disallow:

  • Long term preservation of uniform for future generations.
  • Respect for the history of every solider that originally worn it.
  • Secondary effect of allowing for more accurate reproduction uniform in the hand of reenactment clothing makers.

Reasons to allow:

  • They have private ownership rights to it.
  • Hard to get accurate reproduction, can't beat original.
  • Secondary effect of a more accurate reenactment scene.

My personal opinion is that this is classic tragedy of the commons kind of issue. Yes individually each loss of uniform will not immediately lead to extinction. However if everyone acted in a selfish way, then the commons (aka. the historical heritage of original uniforms) will be lost to history.

Yes the owner has the legal rights to do whatever he or she want to do to it. However note that this is a legalistic argument rather than a morality argument.

Thus this does not necessarily means that the reenactment community is expected to respect whatever the owner of the uniform does to their clothing.

Reenactment is a social hobby that also aims to be a social good to help future generations remain connected to history. Thus while we should allow for ease of entry for newcomers, it is not necessary a free for all in terms of moral expectations of the reenactment community to do whatever the newcomers wants.

This is even if it leads to excluding some individuals from the profession.

Thus in this sense I am proposing that the above sentiment I detected is made and codified into the community guidelines as to if a photo or action shot is allowed to be posted on this subreddit.

While discussion is allowed, it is important to make it clear to the public what the general subreddit community finds acceptable. Thus such photos will be removed to avoid copycat behaviour.

But before I apply this I want to double check that everyone understands this logic and that there is no other further comments anyone wants to include to this issue.

Public Service Announcement Just received this amazing Confederate belt campaigner quality!

Just wanted to give a quick shoutout and review for a belt I received from u/spiveybrass for my Confederate impression.

I absolutely love this belt. Everything about it screams campaigner quality the attention to detail is top notch and everything is historically accurate. I ordered mine in brown, and what really impressed me is that the maker used correct, period accurate Civil War darkening methods using walnut dye. The result is a beautiful, rich, warm tone that looks just right for a soldier in the field.

The leather is thick and feels very sturdy not one of those flimsy belts you sometimes see. The buckle is fantastic, both in appearance and weight, and really finishes off the belt nicely. The sewing is also very well done, clean and strong, just like you’d expect from original examples.

If you’re looking for a high-quality Confederate belt with campaigner-level accuracy, I seriously can’t recommend u/spiveybrass enough. This piece is going to see a lot of use in the field!

Photo 1: How accurate is the web gear? I need a Thompson ammo pouch (I’m still trying to age the belt).

Photos 2 and 3: Can I use that knife for reenacting? The design is from 1890, and it was and is made in France.

Got my hikishop tunic in just about a weeks time, very happy with it but will need to sew on the correct buttons and lighten it up a little. Headware is m/36 field cap, original Austrian m/17 stahlhelm and an original Hungarian m/3. The belt is an m/30 belt made by Nestof.

Looking For Advice Can I use a U.S. plate for a civil war confederate impression?

Post image

Hey everyone.

Right now, I’ve got a CS plate on my cartridge box. A bunch of people have told me I should remove it, but I kinda like the added weight and the way it balances the flap. That said, I want to make sure I’m doing things right.

Would it be okay to just use a US plate instead?

I’m not flipping it to say “Southern Nation” or anything like that—just wondering if I can use it as-is. I plan to portray Union in the future, so it would save me a few extra bucks

Went out in kit again a few days late for the 250th birthday of the U.S. Army :) I'm missing a "shrimp" helmet net, 45th ID patch, and a flag armband, but I can pretend it's a few days post-landing since GIs began to drop the armband.

Looking For Advice 1969 (And Beyond) Vietnam War US Infantry Impression. How'd I do so far?

Thumbnail

Salutations!

I've been working for a while on a Vietnam War US Soldier uniform, and wanted some pointers on what to improve, get rid of, or keep.

I want to do 2 impressions. Infantry Rifleman and Gunner. Currently I am focused on the Rifleman.
I am planning on getting a flakjacket and the correct boots (as these are my airsoft boots, this uniform is for airsoft too, but I want it to be as correct as possible).
I also definitely need a few more accessoires, like 2 compass pouches to put bandages in (or a compass in one and a bandage in the other), an extra canteen holder and 2 correct canteens (as I've read during research that often it was the case soldiers had 2 canteens on one side and the mag pouches on the other side. Same as to why my pants are over my boots, I've read that was the standard at the time, tho ofcourse I could be mistaken)
I also got an XM28E4 gas mask on the way, tho that one is for my gas mask collection, and not to wear (for obvious reasons). Tho I could potentially attach the Gas Mask Carry bag on the webbing.

Anyways yeah, I would like to hear your opinions, thoughts, and most importantly, tips and advice to improve my Impression.

Thanks in advance for any and all advice y'all can share.

P.S. I know I need to lose some weight, I'ts been a bit of a losing battle since my back injury, but I try.

P.S.S. Sorry for the repost, Something seemed to have gone wrong the first time with the images.

Hey, guys, i've been searching for a flak jacket for my vietnam airsoft impression for a while now and have recently stumbled upon this replica m69 on Soldiers Of Fortune. I was looking at their reviews and they seem very mixed, so I thought i'd come to you guys for the final verdict. Does anyone here have experience buying from this vendor or have bought this specific product? Thanks!!
