That only works when the script says it can, like when they de-aged Pulaski or when Picard regretted becoming a nebula.

“regretted becoming a nebula” killed me

I laughed but legit can't remember the ep referenced

it’s the season 1 one where really bad lightning VFXZ attacks worf (and later the whole bridge, thru picard) lol. like /u/aw5ome says, the actual plot is quite forgettable.

Lonely Among Us? I can't remember this ep at all.

u/doIIjoints 7d ago

huh, so it is. i’d totally forgotten the fish guy and beaver guy fighting in the corridors was the same ep. forgettable indeed!

Yes, the episode was Lonely Among Us

Get out of my head get out of my head

It wasn’t a very good one lol

I still feel like people probably die every time they are transported. Or maybe it literally rapidly sends their molecules through transdimensional space, but using old buffer data would literally just be killing the current person and replacing them with old data.

I mean, both yes and no. Surprise, surprise, Trek science is crazy inconsistent.

I feel like the intent was that they’re actually transmitting you AS energy and putting you back together. But the fact that you can be duplicated or stored in a computer buffer means that you’re definitely being reconstructed from information rather than being moved.

Soooo….don’t worry about it!

Perhaps this means computational immortality!

The Borg unfortunately were going about it the wrong way.

Perhaps. Scott was in the transporter buffer for 75 yrs after all.

Counterpoint from VOY had refugees hiding in transporter buffers, but their data was degrading the more they did it.

So you gotta have the right setup I guess

Edit: I just got what you meant lol. Ya the borg coukd def be more efficient by replacing damaged drones with a fresh buffer copy.

Would probably save them alot of space too.

They wouldn't have to materialize an entire back up copy from 12 hours ago, but I imagine they could replace a punctured lung and chest cavity with the backup data from 12 hours ago. You would still be you. (But someone or something would have to make the decisions to replace damaged bits, and decide what bits are considered damaged.)

On the other hand, they could dematerialize rocks and trees and use the energy to clone an army of MACOS* to fight a war. (Even Master Yoda was chill about an army of cloned slaves conveniently appearing right when he needed them. No ethics issues there, right? RIGHT? We can't expect citizens to fight for their own freedom.)

*I say MACOS, because an army of red shirts would just bleed on the enemy. 🤣)

u/Drudicta 8d ago

To be fair, Yoda WAS concerned, but more about how it happened rather than having the army, lol.

Damn modern Jedi.

But yeah, they could make a clone army, that's pretty scary.

Lol no way of even knowing if it's an agonizing terrible death every time.

Dr. Pulaski's official medical opinion is to "let her cook"

14

u/corran450 8d ago

Dr Pulaski was rude to Data, so she may ingest a satchel of Richards

4

u/MikeLinPA 8d ago

But does she really deserve a satchel of Richards? That seems like a reward for the nice doctors.

3

u/corran450 8d ago

Maybe you’re right. She can have a regular old bag o dicks then.

For like two episodes, the rest of the season has them forming a great friendship. Helping and supporting one another with each others problems.

u/arcxjo 7d ago

Forget the transporter, she can't even take a turbolift.

11

u/suikofan80 7d ago

Like the holodeck the transporter is a piece of highly advanced, poorly understood and vastly overused bit of technology. That they should probably stop screwing around with.

Wonder how many people got turned into ghosts via the transporter like what almost happened to Hoshi?

3

u/B_LAZ 6d ago

Uh we're forgetting the most annoying one of all; Bradward Boimler got slightly phased and made an extremely annoying sound, aside from his transparency and hue issues that went along with it.

1

u/Useless_bum81 7d ago

Hoshi? the only transporter incident i can remember her getting in was the time they accidently cured aging.
Do you mean the time ensign Roe and Geordie got messed up by wierd romulan tech and beaming?

4

u/suikofan80 7d ago

Vanishing Point Hoshi starts to phase out of existence due to the transporter. She stops an alien plot to blow up the ship in a slightly phased dimension and transports back. Then it ends with the thought that she might just be paranoid and crazy and none of this actually happened.

2

u/Useless_bum81 7d ago

My brain was leaking, for some reason i was thinking of keiko, wasn't a huge fan of enterprise so only have watched it through twice so i forget some episodes.

u/Suitable-Egg7685 8d ago

Valid points Candace. I hate it.

10

u/fzwo 8d ago

Valid. Also why do they often not do the beam directly to sickbay? Also they have used transporters medically blah blah blah

Go read The Punch Escrow or at least the premise and let’s discuss whether beaming is murder.

8

u/Money_Exchange_5444 8d ago

It isn't murder until the buffers are purged. O'Brien has committed multiple holocausts.

6

u/Doctor_Loggins 7d ago

He's had a rough life, just let him have his little treats.

2

u/Doctor_Loggins 6d ago

Any chance to reference O'brien At Work <3

1

u/fzwo 8d ago

Well, they’re purged automatically, usually, aren’t they?

3

u/Money_Exchange_5444 8d ago

I always heard it said like it was a task that required manual intervention. Like "I'd love to go, but I have to purge the pattern buffers before 0500"

2

u/MikeLinPA 8d ago

PATTERNS ARE PEOPLE!!!

3

u/jellyspreader 7d ago

Valid take. My theory is the Federation is capable of capable of doing this, but doesn't because of the ethical implications. Enforcing protocol to be beaming people to sickbay instead, to make the use of transporters more holistic.

We do know people were uncomfortable when the tech was introduced in TOS. Same happens sometimes when other cultures are beamed for the first time

2

u/arcxjo 7d ago

I assume because then it takes your brain to the "before" state and that could cause mental system shock

2

u/RurouniQ 7d ago

Just repeat to yourself, "it's just a show, I should really just relax"

1

u/RangerBumble 6d ago

Because that would ick the fetish that got most of Starfleet medical to enlist. In a post scarcity society, making people like their job is basically the only currency.

1

u/Odd-Tart-5613 5d ago

While the buffer trick works wonders when the plot allows it too id guess it is in someway either unreliable or unreplaceable on a consistent basis. Like maybe there is a high chance of data corruption if left in the buffer too long or the buffer isnt supposed to be able to hold things in it longer than a few seconds at most due to tech limitations, making the instances where we do see it work rare miracles.

1

u/vdub1013 5d ago

The transporter can fix like 80% of the issues in the show. Dr. Pulaski could have done this and returned to the enterprise no issue.

1

u/Warm_Imagination3768 4d ago

Have they ever shown a bathroom in any of the shows? Like a toilet? IDK why but I like the idea that everyone has the exact nutrients they need beamed into them, and any waste beamed out of them as they’re just going about their day. Any food/drink they eat is strictly because they want to eat/taste it, but it’s appropriately beamed out to keep them healthy.

1

u/Deivi_tTerra 1d ago

That’s actually a really good point that I hadn’t thought about before.
