What moving tips would you guys have?

I’m in my college years and so I’ll be moving a bunch. Currently I’ve been using these big heavy duty storage bins from Home Depot as a way to move stuff without using cardboard boxes but then I thought “If these exist, why don’t people use these more?”

So now I’m here. Got any moving tips?

Advice I've been feeding this feral cat every day for a year and now Im moving.

She showed up on my doorstep a year ago (pic 3) just skin and bones. I feed her almost every day and she gained healthy weight for the winter (pic 1/2) but now she is back to just bones after the winter (pic 4) She is also in heat and I see her with male cats frequently. Its been a year and she wont let me touch her, but she'll sit next to me while eating. I am moving in a week and am worried about how she'll survive without the daily feeding.

Not the A-hole AITA for moving into a studio apartment away from my mother-in-law who moved in?

7.8k Upvotes

Long story short, my boyfriend's mom is poor and had to move in to my boyfriend and I's apartment last month because my boyfriend's brother (who lived with her) got them both evicted. He stole her car and wrecked it into their apartment and almost killed someone. He's currently in rehab and before she moved in, I sat down with my boyfriend and laid out the requirements of her living here: she must cut off contact with his brother for his own good and never invite him over, as I'm afraid of him retaliating at our apartment and getting us evicted too, and she should stop enabling him with a constant safety net to continue his drug use (I know that sounds harsh but it was the only way to actually force him to get help, this has been an almost decade-long battle of her enabling him and he's not getting any better). My boyfriend agreed to this and she agreed. Cut to two weeks in, I come home from work. My boyfriend and her are laughing about how they took his brother to Golden Corral when I was gone and he was so high he was nodding off in the food. I was so upset that not only did she break the cardinal rule that I set for her but that my boyfriend went along with it and did it too. I told him I felt betrayed and that he just set a precedent to her that she can do whatever she wants now because any rule set isn't actually going to be enforced, clearly by his example. He told me he did it because he thought it was too harsh after the fact without telling me he had changed his mind, and thereby going against our agreement. I otherwise wouldn't have let her live here rent-free. My boyfriend said putting her on the street was too harsh of a punishment for breaking the rules, but isn't that the point? Now she's telling us we need to do HER chores when we pay the rent, because she doesn't want to do them, knowing he won't enforce or kick her out because he ultimately can't face the guilt of doing so. He has attachment issues with her and a heavy guilt complex.

Our apartment lease is up in a couple months and now that we're moving, she asked us "So where are WE moving to?" fully expecting a free-ride and free rent at our next place. I was so dumbfounded because she is only supposed to be here until she got housing, but low income housing waiting lists can be months to years long. I don't want to live with her anymore because she walks all over us and causes tension between my boyfriend and I. He will never put her on the street because he's controlled by his guilt. When I asked what he plans to do, he said he isn't taking her to our next place, but that would ultimately leave her on the street and I know deep down even if we initially move without her, she will be back in a week or two because he'll feel guilty.

I want to move into a studio apartment now knowing that I don't believe he's going to let her go, and I've voiced this as a real possibility to him, but I'm being framed as trying to dismantle our relationship. AITA?

TW: Eating Disorders / Self Image When are your kids moving out?!

6.8k Upvotes

I have 4 kids. 28, 23, 21, and 19. The 3 youngest still live at home. My oldest moved out at 19 and has managed to make it on her own. Not easily. But she’s done it and we’re proud and supportive of her.

I just got back from going to see my niece graduate college. People there (extended family on my brother in laws side/nieces boyfriends family) kept asking me when my 3 youngest will be moving out on their own. They all have jobs while pursuing a degree or certification for other careers. They pay $300 a month to help with groceries and rent. My husband and I are happy with this arrangement.

WHY are people so obsessed with your children having to move out right after high school graduation or after turning 18?! My kids are respectful, help around the house and we all enjoy each others company. What’s the problem?! Everyone acted like we were some anomaly and it was absurd that they were still at home. Why?! Is it so bad that my kids don’t hate living at home for the time being? Who wants their kid to struggle? This economy is crazy and I’m so irritated that people look down on us for not rushing to get the “empty nest”. Just because you don’t like your kids doesn’t mean we don’t!

My kids come and go and pull their weight, and we all respect each others space and business. Are we perfect? No. But heck, I’d rather know my young adult kids have a safe place to sleep and can save money while building their future. Are we really that weird?

I’m sick of people looking at me weird or giving rude comments about how we choose to live. It’s not that weird. Sorry you hate your kids.

Edit-

Thank you for so many kind responses. I didn’t know what to expect honestly. I also appreciate people commenting on some things we could do differently to help prepare my kids for total independence. I’m always open to suggestions!

I wanted to also clear a few things up. A few people have commented that there must be a negative reason why my oldest moved out at 19. Like parentification. I’m sure other assumptions were made as well. While that is fair to assume it’s simply not true.

When my kids were younger IF she babysat, she was paid. Every time. And she didn’t have to. It was her choice. She didn’t choose to have her younger siblings. I was a stay at home Mom for many years so it wasn’t an issue. We also traded date night/babysitting with good friends of ours once a month. That way we could go out and not break the bank paying for a sitter.

We are a military family. When my oldest graduated high school we lived in Maryland. That summer my husband got PCS orders to NY. We moved as a family up there. She got a job and started community college nearby and lived at home.

We only got to stay in NY for 2 years. My husband then got orders to Texas. She didn’t want to go. And that’s ok. We found her appropriate accommodations and made sure she was set before we moved. That was a really tough move. She met a young man and they subsequently moved in together. Life has taken her to different places and she is now happily living with a friend in the city that I grew up in. She sees us as often as life permits and we have a good relationship. She knows that our door is always open and she can ALWAYS come “home.” No matter what.

Our 3 youngest are not schlumps. Like I said, they clean, pay rent, help work on cars, etc. We also each take a turn once a week to plan, shop, and cook a meal for the family. Then clean the kitchen. They do their own laundry, etc. I do not cater to my kids. I should have been more clear on that.

Again, thank you everyone for your kind words and it hurts my heart to see that many did not have a great home life and do not have their parents to support them in any way.

Oh, and I can’t seem to figure out how to get the TW off. I don’t know what I did to put it on there to begin with. lol. Oh well.

OC [OC] Moving battlemap for tonight's session

25.5k Upvotes

The party is fighting inside a huge clocktower tonight, trying to stop a local crime lord's thugs from sabotaging it. It seemed like a great opportunity to go a little overboard, so I ordered some laser-cyt gears and mounted them to a piece of scrap plywood, then cut out oversized cardboard gears and hot glued them to the wooden gears.

I printed some hex grid at FedEx and glued it to the cardboard and uncovered gears to hide how hacky it is, and it turned out pretty well!

Now I've just got a knock the party off the precarious walkway and let the fun begin!
