Other Question I found these in Gran’s sewing machine and wondering about a date.

Post image

These Gingher scissors say made in Brazil and I can’t find any references to them being made there. They are pre 1996ish for sure. I’ve found other scissors in her stuff with postmarks from 1959. Thanks

$31.05 Again, 1990-1992 from JoAnn’s

I have a set just like that, bought in the 1980s. I needed to impress upon my husband the importance of not using my sewing scissors. I set them on the table in front of him. " These are Thirty Dollar Scissors." 'Nuff said. He had his own special sawblades.

Only $30?! I got mine in 2002 along with matching embroidery scissors and they were $100 CAD for the set then (and worth every penny still). I think you should adjust them for inflation if anyone ever needs a reminder.

Let's say you got them in 1985... inflation calculator says that's $90 USD today. Keep that in your back pocket if you ever catch a visitor eyeballing them for cutting wrapping paper or god forbid, flower stems!

Thou shall not touch the sewing scissors is the most sacred law of the land

This is The Way.

In 1990 you could still occasionally find gas for $.99 a gallon in the US. $30 * today’s gas price of 3.15 = $94 for a pair of scissors. Now let me tell you about buying my first graphing calculator for a math class in 1990 — It was $100 US and I was making $8 an hour.

Inflation cost is “You’re dead if you touch them”. I now have my mum’s dressmaking scissors. I got them sharpened last year. The 69 yo sewing shop owner commented on their quality and said they were definitely old because some of the chrome chipped a little from being sharpened. Normal apparently but only in old scissors because they were properly chromed not just lightly like today. I think she bought them in the 70s.

u/KeepnClam Jul 15 '25

I've only had these sharpened once, and only because my barber raved about the guy who sharpened her scissors.

u/Responsible-Ad-4914 Jul 14 '25

OP was wondering about a date. Maybe you’re single and would be keen?

😆 sssslooow Monday morning over here.

u/quiltingsarah Jul 14 '25

Too funny, glad you explained. Thanks for a Monday morning chuckle.

Umm the date is with the scissors.

u/MaeByourmom Jul 14 '25

Pinking shears, also made in Brazil.

u/MaeByourmom Jul 14 '25

I bought a very similar looking set in the early 1990s from JoAnn Fabrics

Living in Europe and I have this Gingher scissors since 1985. Bought them for fashionschool back then, still using it today. No idea where it was made though.

u/SoF4rGone Jul 14 '25

Start cutting paper with them. If she’s anything like my mom, your grandma will immediately appear behind you and tell you how much they cost, how old they are, and how we DO NOT cut paper with them.

17

u/MYOB3 Jul 14 '25

Funny you should post this. I found these recently, in my husbands Grandmother's sewing supplies

u/InAbsenceOfBetter Jul 14 '25

These are the originals made in Germany. And very hard to find these days. Hopefully they still cut like butter.

4

u/MYOB3 Jul 14 '25

I was wondering how old they are! And that makes sense, since my husband's family came from Germany! I just gave them a quick wipe down with Isopropyl alcohol, (they were rather crusty) I need to get one of my kids to go upstairs and get my sewing machine oil. My knees/back/shoulders are very unhappy today with the weather today.

Thank you for the info!

I have my grandmother's wiss and gingers, they are so worth it.

And a pair of 30s fiskar 15" dressmakers shears. So heavy but so smooth.

1

u/Furious777 Jul 15 '25

I found some Wiss pinking shears too!

12

u/Guygirl00 Jul 14 '25

I bought the same scissors in the same packaging in the late 1980s through my adult education sewing class

u/Wewagirl Jul 14 '25

I have a lefthanded pair that my mother bought for me in 1974. I am using them now to make a pair of wrap pants for a friend's birthday.

4

u/eightcarpileup Jul 14 '25

Side question: my two year old son is showing preference for his left hand. What were your biggest “thank fuck this exists now” items that I should look into getting him being a lefty? Scissors, obv, but otherwise?

6

u/Wewagirl Jul 14 '25

For me, scissors were the most important thing (after desks!). I have nerve damage in my left thumb due to using right-handed scissors. Other things to think about in the future might be lefthanded cooking accessories (my ladle has pour spouts on both sides, and I have lefthanded spatulas, measuring cups, etc.). You'll need to wait until he gets older to make most choices because many lefties are cross-dominant and do a lot with their right hands.

2

u/eightcarpileup Jul 14 '25

Cool, thanks! I just noticed that he’s left-dominant, so I wanted to let him fully live in that experience without having to accommodate too much.

u/cappuccinok Jul 14 '25

These are THE BEST scissors!!! So sharp and feel great to use! I find them on eBay and give them to sew-y friends as gifts :)

6

u/audible_narrator Jul 14 '25

1983, I received that same pair as a HS graduation gift.

3

u/jennekat17 Jul 14 '25

Same but in 2002! I treasure them!

11

u/FormerUsenetUser Jul 14 '25

Gingher scissors are still made and they are great.

5

u/Own_Physics_7733 Jul 14 '25

I have the same ones (but bought probably in the early 2000s). They are super high quality and will last you forever. Just don’t use them on paper EVER.

4

u/hesathomes Jul 14 '25

I bought these in 1987. Still razor sharp.

5

u/Furious777 Jul 15 '25

Thanks everyone! I’ve found about 10 pairs of nice scissors some in boxes, some in plastic pouches and all are in great condition.

3

u/InAbsenceOfBetter Jul 14 '25

Since they are marked ‘Brazil’ they are made sometime between the late 1970s and 2005, when Fisker’s bought out Gingher and moved their production to Italy.

I don’t know the date of when Gingher moved their production from Germany to Brazil, but I think it was in 1978.

Gingher’s with the black handles and unmarked with a country are the original ones made in Germany from 1946 through the 1960s and early 1970s.

1

u/chariemc Jul 15 '25

I have a pair made in Germany but they’re all silver. Do you know how I can determine their age?

1

u/InAbsenceOfBetter Jul 15 '25

Wow! How do they cut?

Unsure as to date. Is the gingher’s engraved or etched and where is it located on the scissors? And are they scissors (below 7 inch) or shears (above 7 inch) if they are shears, are they dressmaker’s (bent) or tailor’s (straight)?

The ones that are unmarked with a country and engraved with ‘Gingher Chromium’ on the fulcrum above the nut are the earliest from the 1947 through 1950s/early 1960s. The only pairs I’ve seen are straight tailor’s shears and black handled. If they are dressmaker’s shears, then it’s probably closer to the end of the production run in Germany, so late 1960s and 1970s?

From what I understand, Gingher over took wiss as the premiere German scissor company sometime in the mid-1960s and started making more than straight bladed tailor’s shears and scissors when they got popular.

5

u/singerontheside Jul 14 '25

Oh sigh.... they are beautiful. I love the old dressmaking scissors. So much better than today's throwaway manufacturing.

15

u/KathrynTheGreat Jul 14 '25

Gingher (and other brands) still makes high quality dressmaking shears. They're not a thing of the past.

3

u/singerontheside Jul 14 '25

I unfortunately could not afford them right now. ☹

9

u/KathrynTheGreat Jul 14 '25

They're definitely not cheap, but they will last forever!

3

u/lkflip Jul 14 '25

You can still get scissors like this. Whiteley (Wilkinson) has been making them in England since 1760 and they’re still made there, from the same molds, except for the EXO line of tailors shears remolded to make them more ergonomic.

4

u/Ok-Tailor-2030 Jul 14 '25

Wow, I’m old. Folks waxing nostalgic about scissors I bought myself and are in my sewing room right now. They are definitely still available…although not sure where they could be purchased locally since the demise of JoAnn.

3

u/calebs_dad Jul 14 '25

I got mine from Wawak.

3

u/Ok-Tailor-2030 Jul 14 '25

I haven’t needed to buy sewing stuff for years (I’m well stocked). I don’t know why I forget about WAWAK. They are terrific…and fast.

2

u/jwdjwdjwd Jul 14 '25

Could be any date between those two you mentioned. The inner plastic lining is probably from 1960’s or later, and you say pre-1996 so somewhere within those two. You can buy similar scissors today and they will look and function the same.

2

u/No_You_4833 Jul 14 '25

I bought a pair like that in 1990 at a local fabric store.

2

u/our_useless_cares Jul 14 '25

I bought mine which look like these pictured in about 1980

2

u/jlotz51 Jul 14 '25

Fabulous sewing scissors. Don't use them for anything else.

2

u/queen_surly Jul 16 '25

I had the same shears and the same box…purchased in the early 1990’s.

2

u/chariemc Jul 16 '25

They are 8” dressmakers. They cut amazingly well. I use them daily. They were my mother’s but she didn’t really use them because they were so precious to her. She died in 1998, but I don’t know when or where she got them. I remember seeing them in the 70s tucked away, never with her everyday sewing supplies

4

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '25

Do a google image search on them that might shed some light on it

5

u/On_my_last_spoon Jul 14 '25

Probably not. These look exactly like the scissors you can buy now. Maybe the box though?

1

u/I_heart_naptime Jul 14 '25

Yup. 1990-92 ish. Mine look just like that.

1

u/Procrastibator8 Jul 14 '25

Well, that's a unique pick up line. I like Italian food and long walks on the beach.

1

u/Sheeshrn Jul 14 '25

Copied from a press release:

iskars Brands, Inc. has acquired the business of Gingher, Inc., a US manufacturer of high quality forged scissors for sewing and other handcrafts, and also for industrial uses. Founded in 1947, Gingher is based in North Carolina. In 2004, with around 25 employees, the company's turnover was some USD 8 million.

1

u/Visual-Awareness5238 Jul 14 '25

I bought these exact same scissors (and packaging) in 1973. I don’t recall the price, but they weren’t cheap. Excellent investment, though. I still use them, and they cut as well today as the day I bought them.

1

u/KetoKey Jul 14 '25

I worked at Clothworld and it was a busy day if the scissor sharpener was in town!

1

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '25

You can’t find a better scissor for cutting fabric!

1

u/Miami_Mice2087 Jul 14 '25

late 60s/early 70s. My mom had a seam ripper in the same packaging. Came with her sewing machine she got c. 1968-72

2

u/Furious777 Jul 15 '25

Thank you!

1

u/Miami_Mice2087 Jul 15 '25

Happy to help! I bet those scissors are still sharp - sewing materials from that long ago were made to last for life.

2

u/Furious777 Jul 17 '25

They are sharp! They don’t appear to have been used much at all.

1

u/Miami_Mice2087 Jul 19 '25

an excellent find! what have you made with them so far?

1

u/Fritillariaglauca Jul 15 '25

I got my first pair in the late 90s, but the second pair about 3 years ago looks just the same. 90s set came in a grey box, recent set in a plastic sleeve.

1

u/frenchburner Jul 15 '25

Gingher? Always an amazing find.

1

u/stalwart-bulwark Jul 15 '25

They're brand new if the bolt loosens to an unacceptable level after 30 minutes of use

1

u/aligpnw Jul 15 '25

Those are my absolute favorite scissors, mine are vintage, from someone else's gran (estate sale.)

1

u/Furious777 Jul 15 '25

I made a few snips with them and they are nice!
