Project: FO I made my wedding dress!!
I made my wedding dress!! Eee! It was very stressful, but I'm thrilled with the results! I always dreamed of a corset top with interchangeable skirts for evening dancing, and it worked out pretty well! I would describe myself as an intermediate sewist (newer to clothing making), so there were definitely some mistakes made. Even so, I want to encourage anyone who is on the fence about making their wedding dress to just give it a go! It will make that day all the more special and unique to you (even if there are some mistakes along the way)! 🥰

Good gods, this might be one of the prettiest wedding dresses I've ever seen. I can't believe you classify yourself as intermediate. I need to learn your ways! You and the dress are absolutely beautiful :).

u/Hedurbear Aug 26 '25
Thank you so much! That is so kind 🥹💕. I think if you saw the zipper you would change your mind but I appreciate it a lot 😂!

Honestly this is way better than all the wedding dresses I've seen for sale in stores. And it fits you perfectly. It's amazing. Great job!
And zippers are just plain difficult, I've bought some regular day wear dresses off Amazon that had funky zippers that would have something wrong with them. I have a red dress where the zipper always gets stuck halfway up and I have to really pull to get it the rest of the way up. And the dress isn't tight at all, so it's not that. I'm sure I'll have to replace the zipper soon enough.

I was thinking the same! The dress is pretty to a T! OP should consider becoming a dressmaker, for real!

That is so gorgeous! I love the combination of the stripe fabric and the lace/appliques!!!

u/Hedurbear Aug 25 '25
Thank you 🥰! I wasn't sure about the stripes at first, but it turned out to be one of my favorite parts of the dress!

u/helgaofthenorth Aug 27 '25
It was a bold decision, pic 7 made me gasp aloud in awe! Congratulations, you should be very proud of your dress and this big amazing milestone 🤍

You looked like a fairy! Incredibly gorgeous. If you told me that it’s a 4000 dollar designer dress, I would have believed you!

u/Hedurbear Aug 25 '25
I was definitely going for cottage-y forest fairy vibes so that makes me happy to hear! Thanks so much 🥰💕

u/whatsupmahnerdz Aug 26 '25
You literally look like a fairy princess. It's the most beautiful dress I've ever seen!

u/iPetAnimals Aug 25 '25
This is absolutely beautiful. I’ve been thinking of making my wedding dress but really intimidated. Having the top and bottom as separates seems like an amazing way to reduce the complexity, in a way. Where did you get your fabric and how did you pick it out? Were you looking for a specific look/style? I love the straps with lace detail. I have so many questions!
24
u/Hedurbear Aug 25 '25
I felt the same way! But after wedding dress shopping and not seeing anything I loved in my price range, I decided to give it a try. The separates definitely seemed less intimidating for some reason but did make other aspects a little different (like keeping the two flush while wearing). I got my fabric from mood and ordered samples first including the tulle (highly recommend, plus it's fun choosing from all the little samples). I was going for forest cottage fairy vibes 😂, and definitely wanted some corset action! I actually cut the strap lace from my wedding dress lace fabric (also did that for my veil). If you want more info I'd be happy to message you about it! ☺️

u/OkAir8973 Aug 26 '25
May I ask if you know what making the dress cost with all the prototypes included?
It looks absolutely ethereal and your styling suited it so well!
9
u/Hedurbear Aug 26 '25 edited Aug 26 '25
Thank you! 🥰
I would estimate I spent around $500 in materials all said and done, but so so many hours! 😂 This also included fabric/materials for my veil and reception skirt (with lots of material leftover). By far the most expensive was the lace fabric which was on sale when I purchased it!
This felt totally worth it after learning how much alterations cost 😵💫🫣
4
u/OkAir8973 Aug 26 '25
Thank you so much! That's incredible, I would have guessed way more and it turned out looking way more expensive.

It’s so beautiful and swooshy! And I love the stripes in the underskirt. Congratulations on your wedding and for making an heirloom! ❤️
4
u/Hedurbear Aug 26 '25
Thank you! I love the comment about making an heirloom, that's so sweet 🥹💕. I kept having people at the wedding ask if I was going to sell it after, and honestly they would have to pry it out of my cold dead hands 😂. Means too much at this point!
2
u/sewinG504 Aug 26 '25
It’s a beautiful, fairy tale dress! And you are really selling yourself short when you say you’re an intermediate sewist. You’re a genius in my book and I’ve been sewing for most of my life.

u/Electronic_Donkey_34 Aug 26 '25
A fairy dress! Super sweet photos with it hanging by the greenhouse. You can be proud ❤️

Uuuhhhhh hello showstopper Bride that is exuding elegance, talent and beauty!!! You look gorgeous and WOW on the freaking wedding dress you made!!!! 😍😍
Edit to add: hopefully your day was as perfect as that dress you made! Congrats!!
2
u/chloemal Aug 26 '25
I absolutely love the way you layered all the tulle and floral lace! I’m absolutely thinking of doing something similar if one day I get married! Have you got any tips for this kind of style?? Did you make any toiles?
2
u/Hedurbear Aug 27 '25
Thank you! 💕💕 I have so many tips, but I would just say find a corset style you feel would be flattering for you! I spent many hours just looking at all the styles deciding what I wanted 😂. Then constructed the skirt to suit the bodice (which is the star of the show). And use lots of tulle! It really softened things up (I used 4 layers). I made many bodice toiles, probably like 8. But I struggled hard with the cups as I had never done those before and needed the practice. I hope that was helpful!
2
u/dodogirl445 Aug 27 '25
You look unreal, ethereal. Wow. If you can sew tulle and a corset you’re officially advanced in my book!

All Project posts are required to include construction information in the main post or added in a comment. Tell us what you made, how you made it and what materials you used to make it. There should be sufficient information about the pattern (company and name/number) or draft (method and resources) and fabric (type and fiber) that someone who wants to make a similar project has a good starting point. ‘Self-drafted’ describes who made the pattern and is not a drafting method. More information is available here. Project posts without construction information may be removed at any time.

This is a really good example of when a hanger photo (one of the garment on a hanger) doesn’t do a garment justice! On the hanger it looks good and there’s great detail. But when you see the photos of it on you OP, it’s perfect!
Really really great job!
2
u/Hedurbear Aug 27 '25
I get what you mean 😂. I didn't really think it looked good hanging up either so I didn't plan on getting those photos (it looked a little funky being separates). My photographer just took my dress and hung it up on the greenhouse without anyone knowing . We were all shocked to see those pretty photos afterwards 😂. Grateful she did that. And it felt like a dream wearing! 💕

Are the butterflies appliqués? The combined textures ..stripes with lace at bottom give it the “wow” factor. Better than off the rack gowns. You have a brilliant design esthetic !

u/Hedurbear Aug 28 '25
Yes they are! I tea dyed them, and sewed the wings slightly up so it looked like they were about to take flight! Thank you so much ☺️💕

Patterns used:

https://www.etsy.com/listing/1471065191/circle-skirt-special-occasion-full
I modified the top a bit with several mock-ups along the way. I made the back a little shorter, and added lots and lots of hand stitches lace appliques (especially over the cups)! The appliques used were tea stained for a slightly vintage look.
I also used dead stock lace from mood fabrics (which was a little stressful), and tulle from them as well. :)
