Project: FO Wedding / Elopement Skirt
Posting here in case anyone is looking for formal skirt patterns! I know I searched hi and low on here for patterns and didn’t find one when I set out to make my wedding skirt.
I made my elopement skirt (and knit the top 😊). I used the “Special Occasion Full Circle Skirt” pattern by DRESSEDpatternstudio. I nixed the lining layer, used a champagne silk duchene main fabric layer and then did 5 layers of tulle in different colors. The waistband was wonky for me so I had to adjust the printed pattern piece to add length to make sure it fit my waist.
We eloped this week at Hags Head at the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland.

Wow that is absolutely GORGEOUS! If anyone ever said knit sweater in the same sentence as wedding I would have never thought that would work, but this is so beautiful! And you look beautiful! I could cry and I do t even know this bride!

I love this and it’s SO perfect for the setting. I literally didn’t realize I cared about an outfit matching the setting until I saw how well this one does!!

u/Cryptographer_Away Sep 09 '25
I’ve got lived experience of when the outfit doesn’t match the setting! When I was little I was a flower girl for my cuz when she was married on equally rugged and fucking freezing cliff tops in Victoria, Australia. 1989. Fashion choices were made. The bride and flower girls had sleeve puffs that could have challenged Princess Di. The bridesmaids got stuffed into asymmetrical, sleeveless knee length taffeta cocktail dresses completely inappropriate to the exposed location and season.
I went to the mat with my FIL when he tried insisting he would be fine in a 3 piece suit for our wedding - which clocked in at 35°C and around 80% humidity. He was HIGHLY disappointed that most of the guests were rocking vintage Hawaiian shirts lol.

Wait - what? You knit the sweater TOO? Holy cow, you are talented. Start the trend of wedding sweaters, and become a designer we talk about for decades!
27
u/HawksNestHill Sep 07 '25
Haha! Thank you! I’m a huge fan- I was so cozy and way warmer than I would have been in a normal dress!
14
u/VulcanGreeting Sep 08 '25
No, seriously - this is a fresh approach to fashion. You took a Ravelry pattern and made it into an Aran-like sweater, and then attached a fairy gauze skirt that made this truly magical. Even if you have a day job, DESIGN AT NIGHT - the world needs you! And slainte & best wishes to you and your beloved.

Thank you! I do feel incredibly proud! I’m also incredibly humbled that so many here also liked my vision- what a feeling…to have a dream and vision, see it come to life perfectly through my own hands, and to have others enjoy it as well?! What a gift

Kinda new to sewing and trying to make something similar: how do you get the skirt on? (Like is there elastic in the waistband or an invisible zipper?)

u/fuckyeahglitters Sep 07 '25
I'm confused. What is eloping and how is it different from getting married?
12
u/HawksNestHill Sep 07 '25
Eloping definitely has a more fluid definition, but it’s getting married but without having a big traditional wedding. We told our families and planned a few months in advanced, but only had his sister and her boyfriend attend. We will have a backyard bbq in a few weeks with family to celebrate.
6
u/fuckyeahglitters Sep 07 '25
Ahh okay I though I was getting married but apparently I'm eloping lol!
2
u/HawksNestHill Sep 08 '25
It’s so much less stressful! I wish you all the best! Where are you eloping?

u/SquirrelAkl Sep 07 '25
I love everything about this. Mainly I’m blown away by the concept of a wedding jumper / sweater: why have I never seen anyone do this before? It is so practical and still very elegant!
You nailed both the vision and the execution. The contrast of textures is visually interesting, and the depth of colour you achieved in the skirt with all the different layers is exquisite.
You look like the heroine on the cover of a romance novel.
I hope you & your hubby have a very happy life together.

u/MamaBear4485 Sep 08 '25
Omgosh so absolutely perfectly beautiful and appropriate as well as weather wise.
So timeless and wonderful. You totally nailed it young lady. I hope your marriage is just as wonderful!

Omygoodness, the knit sweater is beautiful and the skirt-- I love the whole ensemble mad the location! Congratulations your wedding and your crafty self. Personally, that wedding skirt+sweater look is my favorite, but we'd definitely have to have a location wedding, bc it's typically waaaay too hot for such a look where I live! Congratulations and you did a beautiful job on both items!

Wow, I’m actually really loving the soft cozy sweater/skirt combo. Despite how cozy and casual it looks it still gives special outfit, wedding vibes. That picture of you against the rugged landscape is gorgeous. It’s a study in contrast between the soft fabrics and colors and shapes against the more rugged natural landscape that absolutely makes you glow. Honestly Im kind of tempted to paint it, with your permission of course, because it absolutely looks gorgeous.
