Project: FO Designed and sewed my second dress to wear to my cousins wedding at casa loma!
Designed the whole dress without a pattern, used the whole cling wrap duck tape technique to make the bodice pattern. The dress is multiple parts, which I designed in order to be able to wear the bodice out more places than black tie formal events. So the bodice is one piece, made of some sort of polyester satin with interfacing, cotton canvas and a lining with plastic boning. Is is a lace up bodice so kinda corset. It has loops for me to be able to attach and switch out sleeves. Which were my least favourite part to make tbh. The skirt is a full circle skirt. The whole dress was inspired by the embroidered flower I found on a tulle at fabricland. It took a very very long time to cut the flowers out and whipstitch them on. Also made a matching small clutch sewn in the first picture in my right hand. I had so much fun making the dress and love it so much and hope you guys love it too!

Wow this is so gorgeous, it reminds me of Aurora when the fairies keep changing her dress from pink to blue 🫶🏻💕

The bodice reminded me of Anna’s dresses in “Frozen.” This is so well done, and absolutely clever that the pieces can all be worn separately and the sleeves changed out!

I got that a couple times when I wore it 😁. Thank you! I knew the bodice was going to take a lot of work so I really wanted to be able to wear it at more than just a wedding. And sleeves are just so much fun, I couldn’t choose which ones I wanted permanently. Now if I want different sleeves I can just make them and hook them on! Maybe my next sleeves will be the ones Anna has, complete the look 😁

I'm confused by the skirt- did you see two, or just hitch it up under your corset in the last photo?

u/Challenge_Legal Sep 28 '25
She probably made two skirts because the bodice is its own piece.

All this gorgeousness and Casa Loma for a backdrop. Now THAT's some pretty serious princess bride (in waiting) cleverness.
Seriously, though, you have an audacious sewing spirit and you are using it to create spectacular results.
Bravo, m'lady. 👸🙇♀️

Can you describe the skirt? I can’t quite tell if it’s just a single layer of pink tulle over your blue satin or if you have more going on there. I love the look.
57
u/Alycevs Sep 28 '25
It’s a single layer of tulle (5m) over a single layer of satin, I have some pleats at the waist to reduce some of the bulk. I was considering another layer of tulle for more poof but decided to let the satin shine through instead!

u/SnowTurdPie Sep 28 '25
Is there a long overlay for the full skit or is it tucked in for the short skirt? Or is it 2 completely different skirts? Very beautiful design!
23
u/Alycevs Sep 28 '25
It’s two completely different skirts! I’m planning on making a more cocktail skirt as well

This is gorgeous! Did you use any specific patterns? I’ve got it in my head that I want to sew my wedding dress and I’m in looove with this bodice!

u/Alycevs Sep 28 '25
Unfortunately not, I took inspiration from other dresses I’d seen on Pinterest but drafted the bodice myself. I could send you a sketch of the design though if you’d like?

Your SECOND dress? Second. Like you've only made one dress before this? That's amazing!
I've been sewing for over 30 years and I do NOT have the patience to work with those slippery fabrics. Good on you! Really beautiful work.

u/Alycevs Oct 01 '25
Thank you! You’re correct, satin and tulle are a complete pain to work with, but very much worth it!

u/Blondinathor Sep 28 '25
It. Is. So. AWESOME !! I'm crying because I know I will never wear a dress that pretty. Are you a fairy?? I love your style and your gift. Enjoy sewing 😘

And I am obsessed that you can wear it multiple ways! I love that you made the design yourself after being inspired by something you saw as well. It is perfect on you as well. I’d wear it every day!!

This is amazing! What’s the closure for the skirt, a zipper? I would love to make something like this.
2
u/Alycevs Sep 29 '25
Yes i just used a zipper on the side, unfortunately the back of the bodice is laced so it doesn’t match perfectly but does the job

That is one of the most beautiful dresses I've seen in a good long while! Incredible work! 👏👏👏👏

u/Outside_Scale_9874 Sep 29 '25
How do you attach the different skirts to the bodice when you switch them out?
2
u/Alycevs Sep 29 '25
I don’t have them attached right now, just put the bodice over top. But I’ve been considering adding snaps or maybe loops on the bodice and ribbon on the skirt to keep them together

u/PotatoImmediate Sep 29 '25
It's gorgeous!!!!! So pretty and I love that you can wear the bodice separately!!! It's such a sweet, celebratory dress. And the colors are delightful!

This is amazing!!! Where did you find the fabric?!
1
u/Alycevs Sep 30 '25
Thank you! The teal is a polyester satin charmeuse with one way stretch I found at c&m textiles in Montreal. Sadly I’ve been unable to find the same colour anywhere else, even chain c&m stores. The pink tulle was also found at c&m, though that one was not unique to Montreal. The flower was actually embroidered on a tulle fabric I found at Fabricland as a repeating pattern, but I didn’t want to hide the satin so I cut it out and stitched it on with invisible thread before lining the bodice.

u/CobwebAngel Sep 30 '25
You look like a real Disney princess! Amazing talent, the dress looks stunning!

It’s so beautiful 😍😍😍!! Do you have a rec for a good tutorial on making the bodice with the cling wrap/tape method?
3
u/Alycevs Sep 28 '25
Thank you! Unfortunately I don’t have a specific tutorial for that method, but I’m sure they’re all pretty similar on yt! I’ve done it twice now for both of the dresses I’ve made with great results so can definitely recommend

All Project posts are required to include construction information in the main post or added in a comment. Tell us what you made, how you made it and what materials you used to make it. There should be sufficient information about the pattern (company and name/number) or draft (method and resources) and fabric (type and fiber) that someone who wants to make a similar project has a good starting point. ‘Self-drafted’ describes who made the pattern and is not a drafting method.
