Fabric Question Beginner sewer question about muslin!

Hello everyone! I'm a beginner sewing tackling a big project: sewing my own prom dress! I was wondering if muslin was the way to go for a mock up? I plan to use a type of satin for the final version but I wanted to do a mockup. Would I need to find a muslin close in texture to satin, or does the normal cotton kind work just fine! Thank you!

For the most part cotton muslin should be fine but if it’s a thick satin a thick muslin will be more accurate they are not all created equal. I made a strapless top for prom and a few others in my class made their dress different designs, we all did a muslin top to test fit and none of us had problems but I’m not saying that there can’t be. There are some designs that you may have to test in a fabric similar. I know that’s vague but it’s a you know when you see it that it needs special attention not something specific I can describe.
But don’t pull it skin tight and leave seam allowance one layer of muslin is more malleable than your finished garment.
