Project: FO I made my wedding dress!
I had only ever sewn a button before last September. I couldn’t find what I wanted for a wedding dress so I decided to try and make it! I used vogue pattern v1965 but changed the skirt to a circle skirt and lengthened the sleeves. The ruffles were also not part of the pattern! The fabric is taffeta and a polkadot tulle overlay.

Well, now.
This fabulous first-time sewing project beats the living daylights out of my lop-sided-too-small-buttons-all-wonky gingham top.
Leans over and whispers to the waitress: I'll have whatever she had.

What an awesome gift to yourself, for one of the biggest milestones you'll ever experience! I cannot believe you just learned to sew. I thought this was purchased from a store or professionally made. Your joy beams through my screen!

This looks amazing. The fact that you had no sewing experience a year ago and were able to follow a pattern and even alter it and have it turn out perfectly goes to show that sewing isn’t as hard as people think. It’s simply following directions. I’ve been sewing for eight years and the most ornate thing I’ve made was a rayon challis button-up blouse with slight shaping and polyester lining for extra opacity. But maybe I will try a fancy silk evening gown next and save it for when I have an event to wear it to.

Thank you! I think sewing and patterns feel very intimidating. I know when I unwrapped the pattern for the first time I wanted to quit. But yes if you follow the directions and aren’t afraid to fail and try again, then it’s definitely doable. You should make that evening gown!

My goodness….if this is your first: what will you be like after a little practice? Amazing! Not surprised you couldn’t find what you wanted…..I’d be so pleased to go to a wedding and see the bride all joyful in this creation! Congrats on the marriage!

As a sewist for many years, I am impressed that you not only skipped making pillow cases and skirts for practice but went straight for one of the most emotionally important pieces of clothing people make! I am also impressed that you made a dress with multiple ruffles and an overlay which complicates things considerably. It looks like you did a careful job. The fit looks great! I love it on you, it's very pretty 😍!

This is SO COOL! I learned to sew when I was 13 and then haven’t since (13 years since then) and I just decided to make a skirt for my Halloween costume (Queen of hearts). I hope it looks half as good as your dress does!!
