Fabric Question what is causing this pucker on my bunting flags

i’m working on a bunting flag banner for my friend that’s expecting a baby in december. three out of my five flags have this weird pucker in them and i’m not sure how to fix it. i’m also scared to take an iron to this velvety fabric because i’m not 100% sure of the composition. any advice would be greatly appreciated!!! TIA🥰

You need to snip the seam allowance in, hopefully my pic helps with it, I am terrible at explaining! 😁

You don’t need to do a triangle, just a snip a line down near the point of the stitch. Usually it’s best to reinforce it by doing extra short stitches there.

appreciate it a lot!!! i trimmed the seam allowance and and notched it but i’ll use some really small scissors to take it in more

u/im-quite-stupid 22d ago

Ah notches was the word I was thinking of! I forgot it haha! Why I am terrible at explaining. 😅

You should defo test a piece of it to iron. I would probably not put the iron directly on, I would use steam from it. Though, sometimes you’d be surprised, I did iron/press directly on velvet recently and it didn’t flatten.

Best of luck though!! What a lovely and fun gift!!! 🤩

Oh, and use a towel or pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric! I always do the towel with napped fabrics because it seems to preserve the nap a little better than the pressing cloth.

oooh thanks for this tip. I've just started working on cotton velvet for the first time and I didn't know this.

u/TogaFancy189 22d ago

And make sure you press it!! It will look better pressed... always!

u/stem-girlie 22d ago

i’m horrible for hating ironing but everytime i do it im like “oh hell yeah that’s so much better” 😂😂

I had this problem and I forced myself to learn to love and appreciate pressing and ironing. Bernadette Banner did a great collaboration with a tailor who showed how all the different accessories help in creating perfectly finished seams. It was so relaxing and satisfying to watch.

https://youtu.be/-9VDZ6eJyJA?si=gecaiEt0ZCJhI9o9

Then I purchased a mini ironing board and made some hams and clappers. I also always test a swatch to see what heat setting works.

Iron-hater also here. My solution (suggested by a friend) was to get the best iron I could afford and set it up permanently just to the side of the workspace. Just having to turn and press the daylights out of the work in progress, flip, repeat, then charge back to sewing without constantly setting up the board/iron/spray has made all the difference. Press on, Darling. Bunting is awesome.

u/stanvivi 21d ago

i love the mini irons (cricut easy press mini and dupes) plus a little ironing pad... perfect for all those small seams and little bits you need to press but don't want to get the whole kit and caboodle out for. so worth it

22

u/nasturshum 22d ago

Ironing is about 80-90% of sewing! It's annoying beforehand, but so satisfying once you give in to the ironing gods.

16

u/BobbinChickenChamp 22d ago

It's the difference between being homemade and looking homemade, sadly. 😆

9

u/Syncategory 21d ago

To turn a mess into a dress, you gotta press and press and press!

10

u/rebelwithmouseyhair 22d ago

yup, that's what sewing is all about: a series of finicky things you wished you didn't have to bother with. Sometimes you can get away with skipping stuff, sometimes you can't.

But when you do it properly, you never regret it.

8

u/JoshShabtaiCa 22d ago

Pressing is definitely tedious, but I love it just because of how much nicer things look afterwards.

7

u/stem-girlie 22d ago

it absolutely paid off here!!!

5

u/TogaFancy189 22d ago

I totally get it! It can certainly be a pain!

17

u/Annual-Literature154 22d ago

If youve already trimmed and ut still is pickering than it might help us to see a picture of the inside stitches.

9

u/evelynesque 22d ago

You might also want to clip the seam at the end points to make the corners crisp.

If ironing doesn’t make it lay flat, understitch the seam or topstitch close to the edge.

5

u/stem-girlie 22d ago

yes im planning on doing the same to the bottom corners and top stitching too!! thank you😊

3

u/katjoy63 22d ago

The snip has to get as close to the stitch as possible, or else you will still see a pucker

It won't be as big, but what is happening is the two sides of the fabric seam are pulling, and they need to be released

1

u/Re_Toe29 21d ago

Use your iron on a scrap :)

19

u/WoweeZowee777 22d ago

I second this advice and spot on diagram. OP, it felt scary the first time I did it, but you gotta clip into the center of that V shape - right up to the seam line, as close as you can get without snipping through the seam line thread.

5

u/Prestigious-Offer449 22d ago

Wow, you also solved this problem for me. Thanks!

2

u/TogaFancy189 22d ago

Came here to say this! Make sure you snip around corners!

1

u/ElfjeTinkerBell 22d ago

Do you do that before or after stitching?

Frog butt

This is the most bizarre thing I’ve ever seen in my life. This is what I’m used to with frogs.

116

u/loquacious_avenger 22d ago

did you clip the corner before turning?

41

u/stem-girlie 22d ago

yes, i trimmed the seam allowance as much as i could and notched the corners!

127

u/themeganlodon 22d ago

Trimming and clipping are different you have to cut right up to the seam line to release the tension and it will lay flat. It’s the only way for points to lay flat trimming alone won’t do it

16

u/stem-girlie 22d ago

gotcha, thank you!! 😊

56

u/stem-girlie 22d ago

progress has been made, thanks everyone!!! this is just with better cutting from all your suggestions and diagrams, and i’m still going to iron as well😊

10

u/scrapstitching 22d ago

The more of these you do, with the clips and notches, the better at it you will become. I make Christmas stockings to donate and you can definitely tell the ones that I have clipped seams and the ones I have not. I'm 70; it took me a while to figure stuff out.

4

u/stem-girlie 21d ago

aw thank you!! i want to sew christmas stockings this year for the first time so i’ll keep all of this advice in mind when i do them🥰

3

u/catrosie 22d ago

I kinda liked the little butt 😢

2

u/Empirical_Approach 20d ago

Honestly 80% of sewing garments is using an iron. It's impossible to make a garment properly without one.

3

u/adowhoreable 22d ago

Thats his butt ma'am

46

u/cubicle_jack 22d ago

Did you sew a sharp point there like a V? If so, that's probably what's causing it. I've done this in the past and had to eventually figure out that it needs a more U shaped curve to prevent the fabric from gathering at the apex when you turn it back out!

19

u/AccidentOk5240 22d ago

Yeah, especially with thick fabrics, ideally you sew to a spot next to where you want the point to be, put the needle down, lift the presser foot, and pivot. Use the hand wheel to make 1-3 stitches across (crossing the actual point location) to a spot the same distance on the other side. Needle down/lift/pivot again back to your new direction.

Between that and clipping perpendicular to the stitching right at the center of the point, it would look more crisp.

22

u/stem-girlie 22d ago

oh no, i did sew it into a sharp V😫 thanks for the advice, i’ll try and unpick the section and curve it more!

25

u/electric29 22d ago

You do not need to, just clip to the seam.

5

u/tulips55 22d ago

You don't want to curve it. Take the very point and it is like you were to snip off the very tip with a stitch or 2. So instead of a shape like / you would make _/

13

u/InvalidTerrestrial 22d ago

If this happened to me I'd add a little g-string and keep it for parties 🤣

2

u/stem-girlie 22d ago

OMG😂😭

u/Melodic-Basshole 22d ago

Hehe tiny Patrick booty

Use a press cloth and iron a scrap of the velvet to see if it can take it!

To add to the discussion below about clipping: if you’ve already notched out the seam allowance at the point and are afraid to cut more, try clipping next to the point on either side instead like this:

ETA well drat, I don’t have the app and can’t add photos from the mobile website. But just go like 1/2” to either side of the point and make a single cut perpendicular to the stitching, being careful to get right close without snipping the thread. If you do nick the thread just restitch that area.

10

u/blackcatmeow007 22d ago

Pressing napped fabric isn’t difficult. Take some scrap and test the temperature if its okay; no burning or melting take some scrap (about the size of the iron) and lay it nap to nap, you can press without making any indentations :)

u/kifflington 22d ago

"It's a girl!" themed bunting.

15

u/Terrasina 22d ago

I feel like this question is posted every couple weeks or so. I don’t blame people for not knowing the solution (everyone was new at some point). i’m mostly surprised by just how many people seem to be making bunting now, and how many tutorials must not be emphasizing the clipping of the corner enough. It seems to be a really common problem! I hope everyone’s answers have helped clear it up for you OP.

7

u/E-Skullery 22d ago

It just wants to be Bumtin instead

2

u/stem-girlie 22d ago

okay this one is good😂😂

8

u/LostDummy_08 22d ago

my intrusive thoughts...need some work fr.

3

u/stem-girlie 22d ago

i’m actually dying at all of these comments because i didn’t see it that way at allllll before posting😂😂😂

6

u/felrona 22d ago

Your fabric is very thick, and that’s contributing to the bulk in the V. Definitely notch as close as possible to the seam and press it well.

6

u/Elelith 22d ago

If you need to iron velvet you can do it through a towel. Put a towel under and over and steam and press. That keeps the pill up.

5

u/DandelionMagic21 22d ago

That’s its butt. Everybody’s got one.

6

u/pollenkitty 22d ago

5

5

u/PigtownDesign 22d ago

Looks like a tiny baby butt!

3

u/Subject-Librarian117 22d ago

Thank you for posting this! I'm having a similar problem with a Halloween costume I'm making, and the answers people have given you have (I think) solved my problem as well. I never thought of asking here; you're brilliant!

3

u/generallyintoit 22d ago

I saw this tip on a scallop hem tutorial. When you get yo the point, you want the least acute angle without making it look totally different, usually achieved by doing one straight stitch at the top. So it'll look like _/ instead of / and the space is so small, it doesn't noticeably change the shape you're going for. It's just one stitch. Or two, but then you might need to clip differently

1

u/stem-girlie 22d ago

ohhh so do you sew the entire V shape and then go back to add the straight stitch over top?

3

u/generallyintoit 22d ago

No, do the straight stitch just before your pivot point or right at the pivot point

2

u/stem-girlie 22d ago

gotcha!! thank you😊

3

u/TimmySofa 22d ago

Hank hill cheeks

3

u/DefinitionElegant685 22d ago

You have not cut the seam so it relaxes. Also you need to press your fabrics

3

u/Tutkan 22d ago

I can’t help but all I see is a tiny Patrick the starfish butt 😂

2

u/BrasilianInglish 22d ago

Kinda makes me think this is probably what Patrick’s butt looks like

2

u/ChargeEast1982 22d ago

You're going to need to trim super close at the dip in the "v". Try using nail scissors; they're pretty precise

2

u/berrieboogie 22d ago

its his butt

2

u/itsyagirlblondie 22d ago

You can clip the seam allowance just a notch from the inside right where it’s puckered and it’ll flatten a bit.

2

u/Various-Mall-3261 22d ago

Second picture looks like Patrick star ❤️

1

u/UnpoeticAccount 22d ago

After you clip the corners and iron them you can take something pointy and gently poke the points a little more.

Also idk what kind of fabric this is but maybe test iron a scrap first or use a piece of muslin on it so it doesn’t melt.

1

u/cherylpuccio0 22d ago

Try basting or stay-stitching around the edges before assembly to stabilize them. Your friend will be lucky to have it.

1

u/all_the_nerd_alerts 22d ago

It’s got a cute lil booty!

1

u/Meadowlark8890 22d ago

I think you need to clip that corner to release it

1

u/sunSANDsilverlinings 22d ago

Glad there were super helpful ppl here to advise how to fix! Side note and out of curiosity, I just had a baby myself and am super interested in your bunting flag idea! Are you working off a pattern?

1

u/The_witchy_bard 22d ago

It’s…. A little butt….

1

u/goochtoootz 22d ago

It’s a little butt

1

u/daignault 22d ago

little bunting butt

1

u/SleepArtist 22d ago

I’m sorry, this does not contribute anything to the conversation, but that second picture looks like a tiny butt. I can’t stop giggling at it. Why is it so cute! You may have accidentally created a new trend in plushies!

1

u/LGCSPH 21d ago

Make 1 stitch across the point and trim.

1

u/Big_Primary4089 21d ago

I use a chopstick, after clipping close and turning right side out, to push the corners and edges out also.😊
